The hell's a "Luigi"?

The stuff

  • FCEUX 2.2.3
  • 1 Player
  • Hardest Difficulty
  • Luck Manipulation
  • Contains a single Entertainment Tradeoff

Values

The only value I can give out is 002E.
This value is global between both versions and it tells you how much longer till an enemy spawns.
The enemy "Slipice" is not considered as an enemy so it doesn't display when that spawns.
Coins also don't appear on this.

18 Phases?

No B Button

That's right. No B Button. This button wasn't on the Arcade and isn't part of this game.
B Button is a dead button.

1 Player

Here, we go now the actual reasoning for a 1 player run.
Now in comparison to making a 2 player run a single player must actually use a very useful glitch (example gif shown later) which the 2 player TAS only uses during the Bonus Phases. Which is phasing through the floor.
This glitch will only work if 2 factors are correct.
  • You Jump on the correct frame
  • You Pause on the correct frame (unpausing doesn't mean anything as you can unpause as late as you want and you'll still get the effect)
If you get the method down to a tee but do your jump on an incorrect frame (every other frame) you will fail to phase through the ground making it so you'd bonk your head.
You'll be unable to go back down using the same jump you used to phase with.
This is next to impossible for RTA due to the circumstances.
The single player TAS was made to show the contrasting differences in actually having a partner and not.
The other version will not be TASed as it doesn't have the phasing glitch which can be simply compared to an RTA run (just superhuman).

Couldn't you delay your final jump on the firefly for a faster exit?

No. It's slower to delay. You want to do it As Soon As Possible for you to be able to also Phase Through. The hitbox is large enough that even if you go down a pixel than what you should, you'll still hit it faster than delaying any further. (Delaying from the initial is always 2 frames slower).

Phasing through the floor:

The entertainment tradeoff costs a few frames and shows off phasing downwards as I wanted to at least show it in action (Phase 12).

Nach: I enjoyed this run, and found it entertaining enough for its length, however, not as much as I enjoyed the 2 player runs. Some watching this run enjoyed it too, but a good chunk of the audience did not think this run was entertaining enough to warrant placing it in Moons. As much as I would like to see this published, this run is not eligible for the vault, and didn't gather enough support for anything higher, rejecting.

I liked this one, just like the other Mario Bros. TASes. We get to see Mario dancing around while waiting for the enemies to spawn and there's even a glitch, in a limited game like this. Yes vote!
Current project: Gex 3 any% Paused: Gex 64 any% There are no N64 emulators. Just SM64 emulators with hacky support for all the other games.

Anyone else want to comment on this run? What did you think of a Mario-only run? Was the phasing through the floor interesting?

I find controlling two characters more impressive and nicer to watch than just one.

Voting Meh. It is decent, but not as good as 2p action in such single-screen arcade games. The glitch is nice, but not enough to make 8 minutes of otherwise the same MB gameplay entertaining.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

I enjoyed watching it without any fast-forward.

It was sort of neat for one or two phases, but after that it just left me wondering whether it is really worthwhile to publish alongside the 2p run. I personally don't think this run has enough in it to publish it as a separate, slower category.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

Currently there are two published runs (NTSC / PAL). The PAL version is harder and goes on for a bit longer and the movement is different - but at the moment they're both 2p runs. Could this run be a replacement for one of those to further add to the separation in the categories? For example: NTSC: Single player. Because this game has less phases and is known to be easier it makes more sense to have one player tackle it. PAL: Two player. Because this game has more phases and is more difficult, two players can tackle it. Because the player count is different (in addition to the already noted differences here and in the submission texts of the other movies) it just further adds more variation between the two published runs, making them less similar. I mean, the problem would be obsoleting a faster and potentially more entertaining run so the idea's not without heavy drawback and consequence. But it's food for thought, at the very least.
I'm not as active as I once was, but I can be reached here if I should be needed.

Thanks everyone for their thoughts on this TAS. I knew from the start that it had a much higher chance of being rejected as I was forewarned about it back when I did the 2 player TASes. I still wanted to challenge the odds and instead of using the WIP area for it to be hidden under a rug to throw it up and see if it had such a chance. Great thing to have still even when rejected as it will be used as a whatnot and challenge others who would've thought of making this run. ❤
