I wish this panned into something...I like seeing Zelda stuff :( So now that you have LoZ/AoL/ALttP...where are the GB/GBC/GBA ones? I'd really like to see a LA or TMC one... Oh well...I'll be back to Zelda 1 eventually. Gonna need your guys help for a fastest human route (and yes, you all get credit!)

I'm actually working on a speedrun right now. (See my post in Speedrun Competitions). I'm also finally appreciating how difficult it is to get a full run done with a decent time on this game. I'll have the route figured out soon enough.

I just found a video of a strange boomerang+flute trick, I don't know much about that game so I don't know if this trick will help in a speed run or not or if it's completly useless. Link to this video: http://www.hameko.net/uploader/rd.php?get=hame_2061.lzh

Well now, that's an interesting new way to get places. But does it work in the NES version?

Go to the bottom of the page. The proper link is there. Edit: Oooo, very nice. <o_o> I'd test it out on the console right now but my RAM got erased.

Omg, that glitch is awesome, does anyone know if that works on the US version? Edit: Oh yeah, 1 more thing I should say: Yay, the Zelda topic was bumped! Hopefully we can get some more LoZ discussion going rather than just discussion about all those weird games I've never heard of. Someone should come up with a cool strategy to somehow use this glitch to finish the game in 5 minutes!

mirror (ok, seems to work now): http://fuwafuwa.animeonld.com/hame_2061.lzh you need to have a LHA decompression utility (such as winrar, lharc, etc) to extract the file. Basically, what's happening is link stands on the left side of the screen, faces right and throws the boomerang. when the boomerang is about 3/4ths of the way across the screen (but before it's hit the wall) link blows the flute (facing left or right). he then gets picked up by the tornado while the boomerang returns. as he's crossing the screen, the boomerang hits him, knocking him out of the tornado. when he gets knocked out of the tornado, link's location on the minimap changes (typically, but not always, to the the next level location) but he remains in the same room.

I tried this on the US version but I couldn't get it to work. does the boomerang have to hit you on a particular frame?

Funny. I was just thinking about this game and new glitches. I have an idea, but never tried it. If someone skilled would try it, that'd be nice. Link gets boosted when hit by a bad guy or his flame. My idea is to get the flame close to a wall, and then have a baddie knock Link into the flame in a way such that he couldn't hit it normally. Then, with this boost, hopefully he will go through a wall. The purpose would be to exploit poor boundary detection. This may be used to get past locked doors, or maybe even the Old Man of Level 9. Of course, all of this is wishful thinking, and the glitch probably won't even work. But this video was awesome. I'm not sure I quite understood it. Would it be possible to enter a dungeon room from the overworld? I saw the one time he entered Level 8, but that was the entrance. Also, he had already completed it. If he performed the glitch before having burned the bush, and he walked out of Level 8, do you think the bush would still be there? Preferably, we could figure out a way to warp directly to Ganon's room. Even if not, I bet this glitch could cut a ton of time out of the run.

How long does it take to grab the flute and the boomerang? Does it have to be the blue boomerang or is it fine with the first one? Indeed a very interesting demonstration.

Was this glitch just discovered recently, or is it really old and it was just brought to our attention recently?

I've tried it with the PRG0 and the Japanese (not FDS) roms, and I couldn't get it to work. I wonder if you need to press something else as the boomerang reaches the whirlwind. We can't tell if the player in the movie presses anything else, but maybe he does.

I'm going to find the recorder in the FDS version soon, so I'll tell you if it works.

It works. So you were able to do the trick? Would you mind telling us what you did?

I got it to work in the FDS version, but you have to stand really far to the left and play the flute when the boomerang is on the far right. Someone more dedicated could probably find the exact conditions to make it work with some testing. I couldn't make it work on the US cartridge, though, so a run that abuses the trick to complete the game faster will likely have to use the disk version.

I have also gotten it to work in the FDS version, and I think I've figured out some of the conditions. First, note that the screen area in which you can actually walk around is divided into 11 rows and 16 columns of sprites. Link is not snapped to a grid, so he can be positioned so that he's partially in the 2nd and partially in the 3rd column (for example). I've gotten the glitch to work when Link has been positioned almost completely in the third column from the left side of the screen. I've also gotten it to work when the boomerang was partially in the fourth and partially in the fifth columns from the right. The margins might be more loose, but I can't test it better because the FDS disk inject/eject function doesn't seem to work correctly in FCEU versions with recording capabilities. The location to which the glitch teleports you seems to depend upon Link's position on the screen at some given moment or upon some other factor (such as the position of the boomerang when you blow the recorder). In other words, Link can get teleported to multiple locations from any given location on the world map.

Here's a Famtasia save state for Zelda no Densetsu - The Hyrule Fantasy.fds in case anyone wants to try it out: http://s52.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1OU9J9SVNTGDN1MFKL71M1RBXR Edit: Oops, I just noticed you won't be able to summon the whirlwind with that save state because I didn't beat any of the levels yet! Edit 2: Ok, I just beat level 1, so here's another save state: http://s52.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3FBVYC58ZY1Y433QW8959KLN7V
