I don't quite understand what you are talking about... with the glitch, it should be possible to enter the gambling cave way more than 25 frames faster than in the current TAS. Either way, you can manipulate where the 50 coins end up by entering the cave later. Since, if you enter a cave (or level) there is a 4 frame time window, the rupees will only be different every 4 frames. If you are unlucky, you will lose all your frames there... I remember we had to wait there for like ~20 frames also (these frames were hidden in various locations to make them less appearant)... so actually, IF you can enter it 25 frames faster, you are actually more like about equally fast...

I'm going to do some research and see if the cycle repeats regularly. I was trying to see the minimum number of frames (greater than 4, of course, and without using the side scrolling glitch) that would have 50 rupees in the center item. For example, if I can get in the MMG 40 frames earlier, would I be able to get the 50 rupees any sooner, or would I still have to wait? What if I got there 120 frames earlier?

First of all, sorry to everyone for accidentally creating a new post when I should have replied to this one - still learning the site. I'll shape up - I promise. I do, however, have an ever-growing number of minor improvements to make to the Legend of Zelda first quest run, and would like to be involved in the making of the new first quest movie. I understand it may be a while, which will only give me time to find more.

Right now it's just a random list of small improvements. Like, I found it was faster to shoot the flame in front of Zelda with an arrow than it was to take the damage and boost through it (only like 1 frame though, so it may be a fair trade for the entertainment value, though I wouldn't have done it.) However, that would leave you with 1.5 hearts at the end, meaning you could take an extra boost somewhere along the way to Ganon, probably from a wall pincher or something (I hadn't found the optimal place yet). All but two of my changes save less than a second so far. I can get in the money making game 28 frames earlier now, which still doesn't help - I just have to wait it out. I hadn't found much improvement before the raft. I do have a question, though. Has a decision been made about whether to let a video with the side scrolling glitch obsolete the one without it, or will they both be kept? If the work isn't going to start until 2008, I'll just keep working on individual issues until then, and discuss them at all once.

I saw a posting more than a year ago about a guy saying that he could beat The Legend of Zelda ( 1 ) without a sword. It might be possible with fire and bombs but I doubt it's doable. Can anyone answer me please and if it IS possible, would the TAS of it would be valid. Thanx

I could do a run of this right now if you wanted. I really want to do a run of a non n64 game for a change and see if I can make it optimized and published. I know that people are gonna do this in 2008 so if you don't want me to I fully understand I will look for another non n64 game to do. If you would like me to try could you explain how or where to find out how to do the glitch that will make the time faster than the current published run. If a route is already been made you could show me. If not I can come up with one. Again I understand that someone is gonna do this in 2008 but I want to try a non n64 game if you guys don't want me to do this do you know any games I could try I want one where the final run will be under 20min. I know that seems short but after submitting an ocarina of time run that didn't get accepted I wanna try something shorter and easier. I would post a lot of WIP and fix whatever you guys say I should fix. Let me know thanks.

Just a friendly warning: I once was asked to help them (Phil & Baxter) with luck manipulation and from that/my experience, I considered it almost one of the hardest games to TAS. I kid you not. But good luck with your run.

Work on the first stage and compare it to Baxter & Phil's current published run and see how you do. Depending on the outcome, either use common sense to pick another game or stubbornness to continue and somehow improve their run.

I'm not quite sure if I'm the right person to say anything about this, since I'm the author or the current movie... I'll share what I think anyway (do note that it's just my thoughts, don't need to be the facts). At this point, I'm working with Morrison on a second quest run of this game. Main reasons are that this run is far more improvable, it even being a famtasia run. There is not much wrong with the current first quest run, except of the lack of knowledge about the glitch, which is why it was only used to go through blocks in the dungeons, instead of also going through the sides of the screen in the overworld. Because of this, the run is obviously in need of an improvement some time. I've always wanted to make a new version, when it was known that the movie I made with Phil could be improved. I'm currently TASing the second quest with Morrison, but from what I got, he is also very interested in TASing the first quest. Phil would like also to be a co-auther on a new version very much. RyanM561 seems to be very interested in doing a first quest run also, but it seems to me that he would prefer not doing that alone. Phil, Morrison and I are busy with other runs at the time for a fact. I don't know about RyanM561, but it seems like he wants to wait untill others start TASing it and join in. So what I get from this, is that there won't be any work done an the actual TAS untill at least 2008 (what will happen then, I don't know, since so many people want to make the same movie). Having said that, I'll respond to DaShiznawz. I'll state out front, I do not want to discourage you in ANY way.

I think the Ocarina of Time run wasn't rejected because it wasn't faster than the currently published run (since it was obviously), it was rejected because the run wasn't as optimized as the currently published TAS. I can say for a fact that the current LoZ run is a LOT more optimized than the current OoT TAS is. I think it's a lot harder to make LoZ more optimized than the current run, than it is to make OoT more optimized than the current run (even though the TASing of a run is obviously more tedious for N64... note that I'm only comparing relative to the current run). The glitch will provide a buffer, to make the run possibly faster than the current run for LoZ, even if it's less accurate. This might produce a similar situation as with OoT.

I would suggest just looked frame by frame at the input of a movie which performs the glitch (I would suggest the Outlands TAS, since the glitch is performed there many times). Just replicate it, and see how it works. That shouldn't take more than 5 minutes, and you will know how it works better than having read a long explanation.

First of all, a first quest run will definately not go under 20 minutes. Maybe it will go under 23 minutes, but I don't think it will even go under 22 minutes. I'm not saying I don't want you to do it... but I don't think it would be easier than OoT in respect to making it more optimized than the current run. So I don't really know if this is the game you are looking for. I tried btw to find a good suggestion for a game, but nothing comes to mind right now.

No idea if this is even close to a good idea, due to not really knowing the game that well, but if you really want to do a Zelda run... Could you do a 100% run? You know, all heart containers, best weapon, all sub items? (And whatever else I have missed.) Do not think I have seen one for this game, here or anywhere else, so you do not have to be worried with direct competition if that is one thing putting you off. (Though course... still has to be good.) There might be a good reason for that though, like I say, I do not know the game as well as others.

for DaShiznawz: the only non-n64 game I can think of that I would enjoy watching a tas of that hasn't been (fully) made is top gear for super nintendo. Probably not a great choice for general audience though.

2 pointers: Like Angerfist, I've also TASed this game briefly, albeit the FDS version. It was a nightmare, I was always a few frames behind Michael Fried and I agree it is a very difficult game to do. The published run took 1.8 years. Keep that in mind as a gauge of how much effort it would require.
