there is not much to this game, most of it involves as much lag reduction as possible, though most of it is completely unavoidable at times, especially in later stages like the music stage.
you have a projectile that shoots downwards and sometimes upwards. hitting enemies with them the first time freezes them, and the second time kills them. I sometimes hit enemies with these projectiles to stop there movement, this reduces lag somewhat.
after every stage you play a matching game. in RTA you would just fail it right away, but it's actually faster to complete it perfectly. one benifit to doing this is after the 3rd stage, you dont have to play them anymore.
the hardest levels to TAS were the mermaid stages, hitting the A button on every other green frame allows barbie to move at maximum speed. it's annoying because I had to hide lag frames to make sure I got it on every other green frame as much as possible. if you wanna know where most of the rerecords came from, it's these stages. also barbie's mermaid sprite is huge, so it's difficult to get around some enemies.
you also dont want to get hit at all because this pauses the game for about 2 seconds each time. sometimes you can take damage and not halt the game, but it's very precise on how it works.
That's pretty much it, nothing else I can think of to say. the game is very very crappy, which was more reason for me to TAS it.

ThunderAxe31: Judging.
ThunderAxe31: There was mention in the submission thread about a glitch that could save time, however the requirements for triggering it are currently unknown.
While the run is enough optimized, it's not showcasing any notable trick and the audience reception was mediocre. Accepting for Vault.
ThunderAxe31: File replaced with a 289-frame improvement, accepted again.
Stovent: Processing...

Kudos for putting up with all the lag in this one, but the overall game is just blah. No for entertainment, but I'm sure it will fit the Vault nicely.

Take a look at 4:18... crab queen has a shorter throne than crab king... that's sexist :/

Moelleuh encountered some sort of level skip during a playthrough. I've timestamped the video to a glitch I think may have played a part in causing this: (at 2:11 exactly) Link to video Seeing that this would lead to a huge time-save, could you look into reproducing this in a TAS?

I've tried to figure out how to reproduce it. had no luck so far. it seems to be one of those specific condition glitches that would require hours if not months of trial and error to figure it out. I believe it's due to how damage works in this game. There's times when barbie takes damage from an object and the game wont pause like it normally would, and there's times when you take damage and the game will still hault, but would be shorter than when getting hit normally. this glitch I do believe is one of those rare cases where you get hit in the most specific way possible that the game doesnt know what to do. even looking at the video you'll notice that barbie's health depletes by one unit for a few frames, then immediately refills. so whatever happened has something to do with the way damage works in this game. I will still attempt to reproduce it sooner or later, but I've had no luck as of now.

It looks like there's a couple frames by choosing a different ordering for the minigames (minimizing movement of the cursor). That's because the last flip is free, so you would want the last flipped tiles to be as far apart as possible. Though, tbh, that's trivial compared to skipping 5 stages. Edit: Could be a buffer overflow. Maybe too many sprites were loaded, and when it went to do the damage routine, it ended up writing over the sound pointer and "next level" flag, with whatever it was trying to load.

I made the TAS for the NES Barbie, and I've seen john carls run this one. Yes vote from me. I was a little surprised to see so much back and forth between coins, but I'm guessing this one works a little differently. Also damage boosting isn't really and option

actually just went back to look at that level and realized I didnt hit the left coin to its max. went back and fixed it and was able to save 4 more seconds off the run. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/46407356466712964 thanks for pointing that out, this run will probably be rejudged but I dont mind. got to save those frames! since this is a small change I wont bother making a new encode, the rest of the run afterward is no different.

Cool! Guess you'd have to ask ThunderAxe31 if you can swap out the input file or if you'll need to submit an improvement

...Why is there discussion about what is and isn't sexist about crab royalty in a gameboy game?
[16:36:31] <Mothrayas> I have to say this argument about robot drug usage is a lot more fun than whatever else we have been doing in the past two+ hours
[16:08:10] <BenLubar> a TAS is just the limit of a segmented speedrun as the segment length approaches zero

ThunderAxe31, how can you accept this? Game Girl for Gameboy has cooties! This makes our site less macho. On a more serious note, EZGames69, good job optimizing. Would be nice if you can get that glitch to work. Then we can have even less Barbie. Thanks.

Oh sure, yet this Samus Aran lady is the talk of the town. Sexism is not the problem; the double standard is! :) Yes vote.

Samus Aran does not have cooties and is plenty macho despite not being masculine.

Hello. I wanted to look at level skip glitch (coming from seeing bounty) I noticed there weird glitch? or it just some hidden Easter eggs. First level - Go grab ammo, go back to left to "SHOES" store. Shoot ammo in front of SHOES doorway (or you can just shoot then go stand in front of SHOES doorway as long as there's ammo on-screen). Weird garbled texts covering SHOES and begin to fall down (collecting them gives sport suit power up), looked like:
t t t t t
RWAWKWJWHW
Second level - turn around to left, shoot ammo. First time something pop out "CW".. shoot again, another thing pop out "BW". Collecting them seem doesn't do anything? 3rd and 4th didn't find anything special like first 2. Googled to see if there's any information on them, seem nothing.
