Hi! Has anyone finished this game by speedrun? I would love to see that! I remember it as a very difficult game, hard to finish at least. And also seeing a vid of who can reach the highest levelnumber...I think it's endless, correct me if i'm wrong. When I was little, me and my friend came to level number between 100 - 110 or something. But I guess you guys can figure things like that out better than me, am I right? ;)

Gauntlet II for the NES is a never-ending game.. and the levels get very repetitious very quickly. Therefore it isn't a game that can be "won" (quickly OR otherwise) and it isn't a game that is "enjoyable" to watch.. Without those two factors, there's very little reason to record a Gauntlet 2 "speedrun".

Hmm, okay..I'm not that familiar with Gauntlet I, but is there a speedrun for that, or any upcoming?

Gauntlet 1 for the NES is a weird one...it's supposed to take place *after* the original arcade Gauntlet 1, so it's basically nothing like the arcades. :p Instead of "insert more coins for more health", the four characters all have a set amount of maximum health, and you level up when you get certain amounts of treasure chests (doubles with every level up). The physics are changed a heck of a lot...the ghosts and grunts move in jerky 8x8 grids, in the form of background tiles, to keep the NES from suffering from sprite overload. :p And there's not much point to playing as anyone but the elf, as he runs like a greased blue hedgehog... Another big change, probably the most noticeable one, is that you don't go through the game's levels in numerical order. o_O They're not random, either; instead, they've got multiple exits that lead to different levels. It's pretty much like one big tower/enemy headquarters with 100 floors/rooms. Not to mention that there are some pretty nasty loops near the end of the game, and also a few *really* cheap and nasty exits which lead to game resets or automatic Game Overs (!!!), and there's even one level (96) which has no exits at all...AND, you have to find ? marks in eight certain levels (marked by "?" on the overworld map the game provides before every level), so that they'll assemble an 8-letter code to get into level 100 (the last level)...There's a password system, but I think it stops working at level 79, which is right about when they start to throw the book at you... :p I freakin' hate NES G1. -_- G2 was a *lot* better if you ask me. Though, with all the cheap tricks and loads of enemies G1 throws at you in the last 20 or so levels, G1 might make a more impressive-looking play...go figure. :p

Say it with me: "Elf needs food badly. Valkyrie shot the food. Wizard is about to die." Wizard was always about to die, because Wizard was a big loser.

I think Gauntlet was one of the first games I can remember to use speech; it's the reason it stands out in my mind so vividly. I remember playing the NES version for hours at a time but never getting anywhere.

ok, you are the first person i know to say that gauntlet 2 is better than gauntlet 1. let me point out some reasons why gauntlet 1 surpasses gauntlet 2 in every aspect. gauntlet 1 has incredibly good MUSIC - gauntlet 2 has no music!! how can a game about mazes be played without MUSIC? way too boring! in fact ANY game that has big silence sequences or repetitive "shooting" sounds as the only auditive experience is an invitation to push the POWER switch. Gameplay: there's no discussion here. the elf in gauntlet 2 walks slower than the warrior in gauntlet 1. and the shooting rate is SOOOO SLOW on gauntlet 2 that it makes me wonder if they had a very old pops for a beta tester. It's barely playable. Or maybe they really didn't care about the quality of the game as it would be just a sequel to a good game wich is enough as a selling factor. Graphics: nice try with those shadows. but the game is not about graphics, but about HORDES of enemies taken by 1 or 2 heroes, so the lighter the details on each enemy the better. At gauntlet 2, i also have a feeling that i'm playing some DOS game in CGA mode, as all i see is red/black/white/blue colors. even the main character is pure shades of 1 color, as are his shots. gauntlet 1 has much richer scenery and level design. gauntlet 2 has voices. sure i love hearing a loud OUCH OUCH OUCH everytime i get hit by enemies, the only thing you can do is turn off the sound and play some cd. the characters in gauntlet 1 has very unique qualities, the elf for example runs a lot but u better run past the enemies cause he is a poor fighter. in fact it's hard to beat the game with him because he simply can't deal with the enemies at the 5th (last) world. the wizard seems like a wiser choice as his shot power gets very good later on. gauntlet 2 on the other hand looks more like sprite change of the same character, as there is little to none variation on their abilities, thus making the game quality drop miserably. in resume: gauntlet 1 is a game about surviving in mazes filled with mad enemies while gauntlet 2 forgets about that and make it a game about "my nes can play voices". i think i take the first one.

I wouldn't mind seeing a G1 Speed Run. I have that game, and Gauntlet 2.

gauntlet 2 sucks. plain and simle. since it doesnt end, i dont know how someone would determine when the run was over. The only redeeming aspect would be the fact that the game allows four players. Seeing a run where you control all four simultaneously would be pretty awsome. *The Best vocal: "Red wizard has temporary transportability" Still haunts me in my sleep!

gauntlet IV for sega genesis is superb...and, not only does it have an arcade port of the original gauntlet, but also a quest mode, which is pretty involved...and pretty kewl music all around, as well...the only reason the gauntlet 2 ever did well for nes is because it has 4 player support...that is it!
