(The actual movie kind, not the TASVideo movie kind.) I noticed how we have a general thread for anime. And I wondered why we didn’t have one for movies. I’d figure this would be a good time to start one up. What are some of your movie reccomendations? Is there a movie you want to talk about? What movies have you seen recently that you very much hated or loved? Talk about them here. Make sure you use the spoiler tag if you are discussing any spoilers. As for my movie reccomendations, I really only have one for now: Shazam is a DC comics movie about a kid who can become a super hero when he says the word “Shazam”. It is a movie that doesn’t try to take itself too seriously and acts very cartoonish at times. It is very much reminiscent of the Sam Raime spiderman movies where it felt like a genuine superhero film. I am going to see it for a 2nd time soon and I highly reccomend checking it out.

I only watch some animated films, and rarely: - Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions - My Little Pony: The Movie - Dragon Ball Super movies - Detective Conan movies - Finding Nemo - Finding Dory (<-- very sad!) - Shrek movies (haven't actually watched all of them) I only watched the first half of Wreck it Ralph. I want to watch it and the sequel sometime. Also saw some of a Cowboy Bebop movie which was pretty dope. I'd like to watch that movie in full, too.

No one gonna talk about Endgame? The movie that's supposed to be the highest grossing movie of all time that came out just a couple of weeks ago?

The only reason I haven’t mentioned it is because my excitement for it has kinda died out after already discussing it with others. Also it’s pretty much impossible to talk about that movie without going into spoiler territory so, whatever.

It's just another mediocre super hero film. Also it's VERY FAR from being the highest grossing movie of all time. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm

Captain Forhead was probably referring to theatrical grossing, not overall grossing. Also not the adjustments to inflation part too.

Two perhaps a bit lesser-known movies (at least when compared to the huge block-buster movies) I would recommend are Predestination (2014), and It Follows (2014).

Exactly that. I'll admit that Endgame is not even close to being one of the best superhero films, but I still enjoyed it. Although all the cheering in my theater-showing got SUPER annoying SUPER fast. That's called pandering to the audience, and I hate that with a passion! Also, I'd like to see It Follows. My brother said it was pretty good.

I just saw Detective Pikachu. I was really hoping it would break the video game curse because critics actually like this one. But I wasn't a big fan. I love Pokemon, but this one didn't really do it for me. I felt it took itself a little too seriously and it wasn't as fun as I wanted it to be. Ryan Reynolds is pretty entertaining though.

I recently watched Infinity War again, and I realized what it is that bugged me about endgame. (No Spoilers here) Infinity war rarely wasted any time, everything felt like it kept progressing in the story and things were moving very smoothly, there were only a couple halts to progress, which were probably in the GotG scenes. They weren’t bad scenes, they were genuinely hilarious to me, but I felt like it abruptly halted the movie. Fourtunatly it didn’t take up too much of the film so I could ignore it. On the other hand, endgame felt the opposite. There was so much about endgame that felt like it went on for two long, scenes where the characters are needlessly bickering or just wasting time in general, and it feels exaggeratedly stretched out. It was only after I had seen the film that I realized the movie was 3 hours long, there was so much about this film that could have been taken out and nothing would have been different, and as a bonus the film wouldn’t nearly be as long. Now while I did find that particular thing with endgame to be frustrating I still enjoyed quite a bit of the film, once the final action scene happened I felt like it really was the final, and i left the theater satisfied (to some extent I was left with more questions about the ending but I dont want to spoil it). In conclusion, Infinity War imo was a better movie than endgame, but that doesn’t mean endgame is a bad movie at all, it just could have done without the 3 hour runtime.

So Disney released a trailer for a Mulan live action. I hate everything about it. They aren’t going to have musical scenes in the movie, which means no “Make a Man”, which is literally one of the most well known things about the movie. I don’t understand why so many people think that these live action remakes of their older films are even worth seeing anymore, they are complete bastardizations of what made their original films good. None of these remakes are being made by anyone that has love and passion for the originals, they’re just cash grabs, that’s really all there is to them anymore. Im also dreading the Lion King remake where I wont be able to relate to the characters because they’re just stripped of that. Because in Aladdin, Jafar is just some guy, Aladdin was just a guy in clean clothing (isnt he supposed to be homeless? Why are his clothes not dirty? They’re in a DESERT after all). Scar is just going to be some lion and everyone is just going to be an animal. Im sick of these remakes, they’re not worth seeing at all.

And yet it'll make a lot of money because: "OMG AY REMEMBER DAT MOVIE BEFORES! LOLZ!" I'm also sick and tired of Disney's crap. I'd like to stay away from the Lion King remake, except my girlfriend wants to see it. I can at least try to tell people that they suck.

I saw The Lighthouse in theaters a few days ago and it has become one of my favorite movies of all time. Everything about this movie is spectacular and there’s not a single weak aspect to it I can name. I highly recommend anyone check it out when they can. Here’s a Trailer: Link to video

Artemis Fowl Short Version: Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief has a contender of worst adapted book. Long Version: - Artemis Fowl who is known to hate sports can be seen in his opening scene surfing… - Arti is also for some reason is a decent shot and able to do decent combat... - Artemis Fowl is a Villain turned Antihero. Hero in the film, not even going to bother. - Butler only wants to be referred to by his first name in the movie; Domovoi (3rd book). - Butler looks more like someone playing NFL rather than flexible and can outmanoeuvre around you in a fight. - Butler your sister Juliet is now your niece. - Luckily for you Butler you don’t have your first near death experience and get healed by Holly and you put on armour to beat the living shit out of a troll. Instead what happens is the troll lands on top of you and Holly heals you after the battle, not to mention this whole scene was a trainwreck… like the film. - Holly Short your role (first female member of LEPrecon) is no longer important cause Commander Julius Root is now female. -- Not to mention about the rest of LEPrecon… oh we absolutely nuked everything about Holly Short. -- Dinsey known for pushing that agenda in recent films screwed that up big time. - The height of everything undeground is well spacious to where Butler won't be knocking his head on things if he was down there... - Let’s butcher the Holly being imprisoned in the manor. Yay~ *groans*. - Mulch Diggums you're mighty tall for someone that's a dwarf… him also being well a dwarf at a dwarf's height is very important for story reasons... - Hi Opal Koboi… you’re in the second book. Nice to know you’ve also been dragged down here. -- It’s because they adapted the first three books and crammed it into 90 minutes. - D'Arvit was actually adapted. - Jarring Framerates. “Artemis Fowl grinned right back at him and pointed his index finger at the sky. Actually, it was his middle finger.”

Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam aka The Man Who Saved the World aka Turkish Star Wars. A hilariously incoherent and high energy film with poor editing and cheesy effects shown throughout. An obscure gem due to some sections having scenes, effects, and music almost entirely lifted from other movies. If you can find a subtitled version with good translated English I highly recommend this entertaining gem! Grade B! PS. Rest in Peace Artemis Foul

Over the past week I saw a few movies, more than I usually would see in a week. So I’d figured I write out some thoughts on them here: 1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie. (2023) When I first saw the trailers and teasers for this movie, I was feeling very conflicted. I knew this movie was going to have a rough time due to how polarizing it’s been with the casting choices as well as illumination being the one to take up the movie. Unfortunately many of the things I was dreading about what this movie would be ended up being the case. The things I did enjoy about this movie was the visuals. I think this movie does a fantastic job at capturing the look of a 3D animated Mario world. It’s certainly a standout for Illumination, as many of their movies have never been super complicated visually. Unfortunately what really hurts this movie is the pacing and the writing. I know Mario games have never been known for great storytelling, but the games aren’t aiming to tell a narrative, it’s made to showcase level design and gameplay. In a feature length film, I can’t care about the journey the characters go through if they all feel one dimensional and never feel fleshed out, the movie just kinda expects the audience to fill in the blanks based on the games. The soundtrack was fine for the most part, they were mainly orchestrated renditions of Mario music which was nice. But because this is also an Illumination movie, they couldn’t help themselves and there are a few licensed songs used in some scenes, and none of these choices fit the movie. The worst offender of this was Take On Me by Aha in the scene introducing the Kong Kingdom. It does not fit with the scene at all, and what makes it more bizarre is they originally had a rendition of the Donkey Kong theme but replaced it for the official release: https://youtu.be/fSMFdQU745Q. I don’t understand this decision at all and it’s just an example of how gratuitous Illumination is with their music choices. The movie at the very least is about as basic as you can get for a 3D animated Mario Movie, you could certainly do much worse than this, but you can also do a whole lot better. 3/10 2. Fantastic Mr Fox (2009) I haven’t seen this movie since I was 10, and the child in me preferred to watch the recent Pixar movie that year, UP. I don’t blame myself for not liking it back then as it’s not exactly as accessible for kids compared to Pixar movies. I got way more out of this 2nd viewing as an adult and can appreciate better what the movie is going for. Now I will say I’m not familiar with Wes Anderson’s films, as I’ve heard both this movie and Isle of Dogs are his signature style of filmmaking. Which is interesting considering these are the only animated movies he’s made, and I wonder how the style works in the context of live action. I loved how much detail and thought was put into the animation, especially since this movie contains banter between the characters which not only helps makes the characters feel real, but also gives them more subtle movements that add to their emotions. It really feels like a ton of care was made to bring as much life to the world as possible. The only main issue I had with this film is I wish they had shown a bit more of the world these characters and anthropomorphic animals lived in. Like we don’t know how much damage the hole digging on the tree caused to the rest of the animal society. As far as the movie is concerned the only ones that were chased out of their homes was the Fox family. Like how did it affect the Beaver Lawyer if their office or home was in the forest with the dam? It just felt like it came out of nowhere and I just wish we could have seen how much damage was done outside of the tree. Still, I have a ton of appreciation for what this movie set out to do and I think it’s a beautiful looking stop motion film. 8/10 3. Isle of Dogs (2018) I wasn’t expecting to love this movie as much as I did, but wow. This is the another stop motion movie directed by Wes Anderson, and it really feels like this movie had improved on some of the issues that were in Fantastic Mr Fox. The setting was really interesting. Even though this film takes place in Japan, I liked how the film didn’t use subtitles for the Japanese speaking scenes, as it makes the audience relate to the dog characters not understanding what the humans are communicating. Even for some scenes that did heavily feature a ton of Japanese speaking, they were mostly done in a way that you could tell how they were feeling based on their body language, or if someone was translating the news broadcasts or when the mayor was speaking to the public. I also liked how mature the themes in this movie were. Tacking topics such as Authoritarianism and Conspiracy, as the current Mayor clearly doesn’t want to compromise on his decision to banish dogs to trash island, as it’s what garnished his support in the election, even going as far as to prevent the truth of the matter from reaching the public. Another huge improvement is the animation. I did love the animation in Fantastic Mr Fox was impressive, but Isle of Dogs is on a whole different level. There are many scenes in this movie that make me wonder how they were able to pull it off, such as the Sushi scene, but also scenes where a dog would be moving inside a cage, which on an animation perspective you’d think the cage has to be removed for each frame and a side effect would be the cage would be slightly shifted every time, but surprisingly the cage stayed dormant the entire scene, which goes to show how much thought and detail they put in the look and feel of this world, where instead of feeling like a stop motion movie, it feels like the characters are actually moving in real time. The soundtrack is also incredible. There’s a constant sound of a steady drum beat in many of the tracks that is difficult to get out of your head, further putting this impending doom in your mind of what the characters are about to face. There’s very few things I can really complain about with this film that wouldn’t change my overall experience. It is a rare once in a blue-moon film that not only tells and engaging story, but is also gives an incredible amount of visual details to pick up on with every watch. I hope Wes Anderson continues to make more amazing stop motion films like this. 10/10
