Yeah, it's difficult to not feel like he's not interested in discussing this. Of course, if that's the case, the easy solution would be to tell us, and tell us why.
I think more layers of stardom is just confusing this overdebated matter further.
My suggestion:
- Change "List the _best movies_ (recommended for first-time viewers)" to "List the _movies recommended for first-time viewers_).
- Put a voting counter 1-10 on every movie that logged in users can access.
- Put a new list item on the front page, "List the _best rated movies_"
- Put a new list item on the fron page, "List the _most downloaded movies_"
This way
1) star movies loses the double meaning (best vs. suitable for newcomers),
2) everyone gets a say in which movies should be highly visible, and
3) world peace ensues.
A voting system takes a bit of programming. Given how good some people here are at programming, I can't imagine this being a problem at all. There are probably premade systems made too.
They are not awards for the players (even though the players are welcome to take them as such), but a guide for newcomers. The purpose is to increase the chances that the first movie watched by someone will actually make them go "WOW!".
I have lately been too busy to actively participate in this (or many other) discussion, which is why I haven't taken a decisive stance on this question yet.
The moon shows up on Internet Explorer, but the green star shows up on Mozilla Firefox. I prefer the green star, so I will continue to use Mozilla Firefox on this site.
JXQ's SMW now got its star. It robbed the star from the 100% movie, but to compensate, I added a link to the 100% movie in JXQ's movie entry. This should be the most useful solution for the audience (with the currently available tools).
Why is it that two different runs of the same game cant both have a star? Fabian's SMW 96-exit run that just got done no doubt needs a star, but this doesnt mean it should take the star away from JXQ's SMW 11-exit run. They are both equally deserving and are both some of the best videos on this site, so they should both have a star. And while I'm on the subject, SDW 120 should also have a star on the basis that a) it deserves one and b) its technically not the same game as SMW.
because, again, the star is not an award to the players, but 'movies recommended for first time viewers'. You don't tell a first time viewer "hey, look, here's 3 hours of mario stuff. Go watch them all!". You'll tell him "look, this is what we do to mario. If you like it, come back for more, we got plenty".
I haven't read all the posts in this thread, so please forgive me if someone already mentioned this.
Phil Cote's Castlevania in 11:41 should be starred!
It's a popular and well known game/series.
It has great graphics and a soundtrack to match. As far as NES games go, it's top notch.
It's short, and fun to watch.
It's played extremely skillfully (using enemy creatures as platforms, using holy water to it's upmost effectiveness to score whore and stun enemies, using Belmot as a critical strike weapon, using luck manipulation for extrordinary drops, demonstrates exceptional knowledge of enemy creature behavior, etc).
And it was the video that introduced me to TASvidoes!

I think overall the star policy is very very reasonable on this site, even though I've not always agreed with each particular case.
I think it's worth noting though, that if a list of the movies with a moon was avaliable on the front page in the same way the starred movies are now, that award would instantly (in my eyes) become more "prestigious", and, also, most of this "one star to one game" debate would disappear.
Yeah, I agree with what Fabian said. You know if you obsolete a star movie, it has to be really good. The moons should have their own page or something like that.
The moon stands for a notable publication. Mostly they're meant to be attention-grabbers at the front page.
When the movie is scrolled out from the list on the front page, it no longer has that purpose. It doesn't lose its status, but the moon is just never displayed after that.
Phil Cote's Castlevania in 11:41 should be starred!
It's predecessor was starred at some point, but I'm not sure why it lost its star. Probably in favor of some other movie of similar type.
I'll rotate a star from Ninja Five-0 to Castlevania. :)
Is there a url that would show the top 10, 20, 50, whatever number of movies by rating? I think that would be a helpful link to add to the front page.
This would probably be better than my suggestion of the moon runs, unless all the good old runs (hi S&K3) were handed moons. Then it would probably be very similar for all intents and purposes.
Fabian just provided me with this link for rating movies. I looked all over the site and couldnt find this link myself anywhere. Even if it is somewhere, its not obvious as to where. There should really be a link right under where it says the movie's rating on the the movie page. That way more people would vote. Sorry if this request doesnt belong in this topic.

The short "Link to the Past." Come on. It's a long game beaten in five minutes. Five freakin' minutes.
I believe that if the LttP that's currently being worked on by Erokky and dezbeast, any% and 100% will easily be better than the 5 minute. I personally hate the 5 minute one, and I think the any% can still show a long game beaten very fast, especially since a lot of new techniques are discovered. Erokky and dezbeast's WIPs are very promising, but sadly we'll have to wait a while because they are meticlous workers.
Also, because it is close to my heart.... at least one DKC get a nominee/be considered, Arne's DKC1 any% (has the highest rating) should at least be looked at, it's 25 minutes so no boringness and entertaining throughout with many great glitches, great precision and new viewers can through that movie gain interest in the 5 (soon to be 6) runs of the DKC series (any% and 100+% for each of the three games.)
I don't have any other star nominations, sadly all the AVI's of the TASes I watch over and over again either are starred or will be considered for.
I also think that any movie that is mentioned in the description of a starred movie should have the moon, as significance for being referrenced within a starred movie. Unless the moon does already have a predefined use which I'm unaware of.
