This is what it sounds like when there's lots of Sligs making the same sounds whilst the DDG is on - Sligs (Flamingos) in the pub!

Main Comments

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is a 2D side scrolling platform game released in 1997 for the PS1 and PC. This movie beats the previous movie by 4 seconds (294 frames faster when the movie file is replaced) thanks to some new strats in the Zulags and time saves in the Monsaic Lines.

Technical Stuff

  • Emulator Used: Bizhawk v2.4
  • BIOS used: SCPH7003.bin
ROMS used:
  • Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (USA)

Game objectives:

  • Bad Ending
  • Heavy Glitch Abuse
  • Major Skip Glitch

Here is a list of glitches that we used:

Death Delay Glitch

Often abbreviated as DDG it makes Abe invisible and can corrupt his sprite and eventually become invisible at some point allowing him to get past things that would kill him. Abe will die if he falls of a ledge or gets zapped. A video made by Sligfantry can show you how this glitch works:

Auto Turn Delay Glitch

This glitch works by standing on the edge of the ledge and pressing the down button quickly and run towards a spot where you would like to hoist down. You will need to press either 'left/down' or 'right/down' depending on which direction Abe was facing.

Stop Turn and Backwards Jump

By timing this glitch perfectly you can make Abe stop and turn. To set it up, Abe needs to be standing near a ledge (pressing up whilst tunring arround) you will be able to make Abe do a backwards jump. Notice that when you press the opposite direction to where Abe is standing at the incorrect frame, Abe will just jump up and stand. But if you time it perfectly, Abe will jump backwards and possibly jump to another screen. This will allow you to jump backwards to areas and skip Zulags. In a 100% run it will allow you to get to secret areas quicker and it skips a section of StockYards Escape after finishing the secret area. Sligfantry's video can show you how this glitch works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIo1TJUBGlo

Multiple Backwards Jump

Whilst performing a backwards jump, simply press up/jump and Abe will do a multiple backwards jump and in this run Abe will use it to skip Zulag 3 to get to Zulag 4.

Diagonal fall

This is done by combining the stop turn and the auto turn glitch. It is used as a time saver in Monsaic Lines and to save a frame in RuptureFarms.

Bird Portal Closure Glitch

This run contains a glitch which saves a few frames. You can free the Mudokon a few frames earlier than a normal rescue. Here is the before and after video on how it looks when using the glitch.

Jumping from a Roll

A new thing discovered by Himmdwag, in some parts of the game Abe will jump from a roll!

Faster Slig Dodge

Improvements

Monsaic Lines

A few frames were saved in the Monsaic thanks to the RTA connumity doing some IL runs on the PC version and discovering new strats there for any% NMG runs. You'll notice a change in the way I jump past the second slinger and how I enter the bird portal.

Zulag 1

On this day, August 27th 2021, the legendary Dawg known as Himmdawg found a new strat in Zulag 1, the grenadeless skip! He has been looking for a way to skip grenades in this Zulag for a while and now he's finally found it! This is what has caused a time save in this run by skipping collecting the grenades here.

Zulag 4

In this Zulag, I now do the DDG right before the Slog kennels. Instead of getting the grande to do the DDG, Abe now does the DDG using the time bomb which saved me a few seconds here!

Thanks

I need to thank Himmdawg once again for his discovery of the new grenadeless strat in Zulag 1. Thanks again Himmdwag. You're the man! An die Arbeit!

feos: Judging...
Samtastic: Waiting for the movie file to be updated with the 12:55.06 that will be 294 frames faster than the published run.
feos: Updating the file, since there's no news about further improvements for almost 2 weeks.

Its good to see how dedicated you are to perfecting this game. I love the demonstration of glitches. Great job on the continued efforts and yes vote.
I recently discovered that if you haven't reached a level of frustration with TASing any game, then you haven't done your due diligence. ---- SOYZA: Are you playing a game? NYMX: I'm not playing a game, I'm TASing. SOYZA: Oh...so its not a game...Its for real? ---- Anybody got a Quantum computer I can borrow for 20 minutes? Nevermind...eien's 64 core machine will do. :) ---- BOTing will be the end of all games. --NYMX

Please can a mod replace the input file with this one? I managed to save 20 more miliseconds thanks to some new strats in Monsaic Lines that Namesoom has done in his IL runs! This was an easy one to sync too. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/73912401948947623

Since it always takes about 5+ replacements every time, I'll wait and let you improve it further.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

Himmdawg is going to go through it and see if there’s anything else I can improve to get a 12:58.

Another few milliseconds saved thanks to a better Slog skip in Zulag 1 and Slig dodging in Zulag 3. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/73958872161409085 This one should be final improvement now.

Yes vote. Interesting couple glitches. Thought the backwards jumping through walls (?) and the invisible glitches were the most entertaining. Also, that's a pretty brutal ending lol.

The jumping through walls I call the 'continuous backwards jump' or some people in the community call it the 'continuous long jump'. The invisible glitch is called the DDG has when you do the glitch, Abe delays his death until he falls of a high ledge. It has a similar behavior to the DDCheat from the PC port of the game which expect to see a TAS through libTAS of Exoddus with all the crazy relocation glitches very soon! Update: Himmdwag is gonna go through this run with me tonight. If he can't find any improvements then this will be good to go.

Hey I know this run is being published, I need to check to see if I can improve this section here, I notice that in my RTA run, I don't roll too much here which I feel like running towards the lever might be faster, please don't publish this just yet. I want to check something first: https://youtu.be/VgEmGF28ryE?t=544 Update: Tried it, it's still the same. Nothing to update. Go ahead and publish it.

I’m going to suggest that if you have any future improvements for this game or any other game you TAS, instead of submitting a new movie EVERY TIME you find one, you should instead wait until you have a substantial amount of improvements so there’s more to show off. Seeing how this game has a bunch of improvements over many submissions, it doesn’t make sense why you wouldn’t try to consolidate them so we can avoid having a bunch of submissions.

We always have a connumity finding new strats. We haven't found anything major for any% that will skip any zulags yet but there's always ideas floating around.

Just keep in mind that you do not need to make a new submission every time you find a few improvements. It would be better to wait until improvements are found so there isn’t a bunch of submissions for this game like there has been.

Just as an idea of how you could potentially set things out: Maybe try to limit it to 1 TAS per year, unless the improvements found are substantial enough to shave off more than 2% of the published run's time.

Sounds like a good plan.. I got an Exoddus 100% TAS in the works and that one is gonna be saving time comparing against a run that was made 2 years ago.
