Uses much Frame Advance and SaveStates
Thinks which I have done in this run:
  • Aims for the fastest time.
  • Never Save in the game.
  • Takes no damage from enemies.
  • Best usage from items.
  • Manipulate luck & enemies.
  • Get only weapons & items which you need to finish the game.
  • Get no Armor, Shield or Helm.
  • Speak only with people which are important to finish the game.
  • Use only Power by Level-Up.
  • Use tricks.
I would count this too as a no damage run. I take damage only 4 times, but there is no other way by this 4 times. I must go this ways to finish the game and the spikes or lava are in my way. I can't go around these places, so I take there damage. But all other ways, where I can go araound I do it. So its maybe faster to go through spikes, but I don't want it. Looks better when go around these other spikes. And then I can count this as no Damage run too.
Here is now my second run from this great game, enjoy it. Maybe you have see the first version from me and see much errors and bad moves. Now don't think this will too a bad run. This one is much improved in many things. Skip the beginning now, not know that you can skip it in my first run. Get only chests which I need and take the shortest routes to every place. Kill only enemies which on my way. So it cost not much time and I Level Up this way. Kill Bosses much faster and looks much better. Use the items optimal. Get too Crystal this time and use them. Save much time. Buy no armor, shield or helm. Not sell items, weapons or armor. Use now much Frame Advance, what I have not done in my first run. Played the game much faster, because I walk to near all screens the fastest way. Now its looks good and I am very happy with the result. Its over 20 minutes faster then my first version. And I defeat the last Boss under 1:40, but I must record more, because you must still skip the last messages from the mother. So its a bit over 1:40.
Tricks I used: Hit an enemie and walk through them. When it cost to much time to kill an enemie I just hit them one time when it is in my way and walk through them. Its much faster as kill all enemies. Hit an exploding enemie, that the exploding slide over the screen. Looks nice and happen sometimes. Push enemies. Looks great, but you can't push all enemies and some which you can push not any time. I push enemies sometime just for fun, when I need chests, not want to get a chest or when I can't defeat them with the weapon I have equiped.
Item Usage: Sometimes I use a new item, to save time. For example: when I need 3 keys in a row. I will equip a new one and not a key where is only 1 or 2 left.
Weapons: I use most the best weapons for the Bosses. Sometimes an other weapon is maybe stronger, but Morning Star can attack 4 times with one hit. And when I use other weapons I have test it too which is better. The Ice Sword is stronger then Morning Star, but some Bosses can't be hit from it like the last Dragons.
Chocobo: I get him as fast as possible, because he is fast. And I like him. You can skip him in the first part from the game, but I think many would like to see him as fast as possible in this game.
There is so much I can tell about this game, but I think it will to much here. So I have make a txt file and upload it here with the important things for this run. So when you want to know something look there. I explain much there about my run.
At last enjoy this run with no big errors and a great time. This will be my last version for now for this game. My left hand hurts much now, because the keys on my keyboard for Frame Advance are in a stupid position (Strg & n). But for this game I have done it without watch out for my left hand. So I hope many like this run and see what is possible in this adventure game what you normaly play over more hours.
PS: And sorry for my bad english, but better a bad english discribtion then no run. ;-)
Cancelled, because I done it now over 8 minutes better with much improvment which you will see.

Good. If possible, would you please give a link to download your savestates for this game?

Ah, I gotta check the rest of this out. However, it's worth pointing out that Tafatt has demonstrated many possible improvements to Matty's techniques. A starting run was posted which escapes the arena 5 sec faster and reaches Bogard 10 sec faster. This version of Matty's run is definitely much better than the first, it may be publishable. Who knows how long it will take to produce a truly high-quality run? Edit: Ok, watched the rest of this. Your route planning is good, but your boss fights are poor. This doesn't have a huge effect on the actual completion time, but greatly improves the perceived quality. Boss fights are generally the highlight of any timeattack, they should be highly optimized. Check this out: http://home.comcast.net/~f_amoroso/FinalFantasyAdventure-MattyXB-improved.vbm I've sped up the final final boss fight by about 30 sec. It's really just a lot of little things, but mostly it's about being more aggressive and not limiting yourself to normal playing methods. In general, you have to advance the action frame-by-frame. Once again, I have to thank Matty for finding all the improvements he did, but I still don't think this run is worth publishing. Better boss fights would really break the monotony of the long dungeons and outer world treks. In many spots the dialog isn't being scrolled nearly fast enough. Perhaps worth a meh just because of the classic quality of this game, but definitely not solid enough for a yes.

Battles can be improved somewhat... and those 5 seconds could definitely be shaved off. Other than that though, I think this run is pretty excellent. I think he's probably right about the spikes and lava and that he fought time-efficient enemies. I think that any time saved would be by taking extra damage (and that wouldn't save much time since you'd need to buy armor to take any reasonable number of hits) and some boss fight changes. EDIT: How much room for time improvement do you think there is, TheAxeMan?

I think myself, that many things can improved. You can see in the last Boss-fight, that it can be done 30 seconds faster like TheAxeMan shows. This was my first try for a speedrun. So I have not much practice with Frame Advance and how this all work exact. My later runs are much better now. The text scrolling is to bad in this run. Not as fast as possible. Ok, maybe only some Frames missing, but this in every message and text. So there you can save maybe too some seconds or minutes. And I don't know which Level is the best. I think I Level-Up to much in this one. Not sure which Level do you need for the spikes and the Lava. At the other side, every Boss is faster defeated with every Level you are higher. But the Level-Up take to some time. So it must be very hard to find the right balance here. Its a hard game to run, not the run through Stages, this was easy and as fast as possible most, but Boss Fight are hard (for me). So many different choices what you can do. When you attack first, where you must stand and everything else. I think you must do near all in Frame Advance. I have try and done it too, but most I press the wrong button at the wrong time and lose many time here. I do it in all later runs now everytime when you must press a button. So I know it is a hard work. For example the last Stage in Gargoyles Quest which takes in the movie only 2 minutes I worked maybe 1 hour or longer on it, all with Frame Advance. But you will see this work. And for a Adventure which will take for sure over 1 hour you must work much harder then I have done it here. So I hope, that maybe someone else will try this great game to run. Or that I find someday maybe the motivation to try it again with much harder work for myself. I have not much idea how much time you can save. Maybe 10-20 minutes. But only a guess.

Yes Matty, you've certainly improved a lot since your FFA run. It's always hard to estimate how much improvement is possible, but you're probably about right. Also, using this run for comparison, making a better version should be pretty easy. The outer world travel should be pretty fast, but it will indeed be necessary to frame advance pretty much every boss fight. But hey, this game is so sweet, I'm sure someone will pick it up eventually.

Interesting comments from TheAxeMan, so I do hope a second, improved version follows. That being said, I find this run quite solid overall and do hope it gets published, and that you or someone else picks up the run to improve it. Voted yes.

I think my english is so bad, so something sound strange in my post. Sorry about this, but I try my best. :-) But why I have the feeling, that somebody vote yes by this old cancelled run? Or I am wrong. As I last look at the votes this has only 6 votes and now 7. Or have I mix something? This 8 minutes longer version has more Confidence then my other much better version. When somebody vote on this so late, please don't do it. Vote on the new one, which is over 8 minutes faster. FFA Run 8 minutes faster Or maybe later on my Warp run, when this is finished which will again much faster.

I disagree. I think your English is great, especially for second language.. You speak, err, type it better than i type German. Your sentences are awesome. Anyhow, I said it because I agree.. Nobody likes a slow chocobo, and I'm glad you went through the extra effort to make him go as fast as possible. Keep it on the fast lane!
