I saw people have been submitting Action 52 games one by one, so I thought I'd submit my Lollipop movie from a while ago. I did Non Human back then as well, but someone beat me to that earlier this month. I also have solid WIPs on Meong and Micro Mike.
With fast movement, a kinda fun weapon, and actual level exit tiles, this platformer is almost competent!

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: FCEUX 2.3.0
  • Beat one loop of Lollipop(s)

Comments

Lollipop(s) shares the same awkward controls where you can't move and jump at the same time. To adapt to the crap factor, you should press B for 1 frame.
Lollipop Guy takes fall damage (in midair), but you can prevent this by swinging your mighty bludgeon to stall like Super Mario 64. Actual tech!?

Stage by stage comments

Level 1

At frame 2922, the one actual trick of the run starts, so you better listen up. First, I clip the edge of the gumball to avoid an air stall, which saves 14 frames. Then after I hit the ground and jump, I stop briefly to bonk my head on the ceiling of that same gumball so I don't get stuck up in that gap, which saves another 18 frames. 32 frames total.

Level 2

I held right and jumped over some indescribable bad guys.

Level 3

In this level, the sound engine shits itself for no reason. Not that you'd know because it already sounds so bad... And that's not just traditional Action 52 bashing; it has these two chiming tones that slowly drift out of sync and make you wonder if it's a glitch. You can hear the music in its true form if you hold still at the beginning of the level.
Also, for some reason you have to jump off the starting platform. There's some invisible collision that prevents you from moving right. I think maybe you spawn slightly inside the ground.

nymx: Claiming for judging.
nymx: Setting to delayed. Waiting for warmCabin, pending re-work of un-optimized areas.
nymx: Replacing with new an improved movie from warmCabin.
nymx: Excellent! Thanks for revisiting your work. I knew that you were going to find more on that first Level. Well, I'm satisfied that this is optimized enough for a publication now.
Accepting to "Standard" for publication.

despoa: Processing...

I'll admit one thing... this game sometimes gets me really curious, mostly because I think it's either trying to play a bad song ID with undefined data or it's somehow corrupting pointers or causing a previous song's data to leak into the next song... or it could be multiple causes. I already know that in at least one game's case, it crashes at the end of a level because it runs past the end of a level pointer array... whereas the counter is more than that.

Me too. If you click on that "true form" link, doesn't it sound like the level 1 music on the triangle wave? Reverse engineering that sounds like torture. You might like Displaced Gamers' video on this game. He doesn't touch on this topic specifically but he does show some interesting stuff about the input processing.

warmCabin...my first run-through of the the first level is showing signs of not being optimal. In this case, since the game is so short running...it stands to be rejected for optimization issues. I know these Action 52 games present themselves as a simple platformer, but because of the horrible mechanics...there are cuts to be exploited. I have cut 22 frames off, just playing around with a few spots, on the first area. If I were to give this a hard go...there definitely can be more. Not sure how you want to proceed...but I am extending a chance for you to clean up these inputs. i would rather get this fixed, than have you redo a submission.
I recently discovered that if you haven't reached a level of frustration with TASing any game, then you haven't done your due diligence. ---- SOYZA: Are you playing a game? NYMX: I'm not playing a game, I'm TASing. SOYZA: Oh...so its not a game...Its for real? ---- Anybody got a Quantum computer I can borrow for 20 minutes? Nevermind...eien's 64 core machine will do. :) ---- BOTing will be the end of all games. --NYMX

Thank you, I will take a look when I get back home this weekend. I should've done that in the first place before trusting my 5 year old inputs. Would you mind telling me where specifically you saved time?

sorry warmCabin. I got distracted and forgot that you requested my inputs. Here is what I was able to accomplish, but I'm sure more can be found. https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/638262741355748864

warmCabin...are you having any success with optimizing your inputs?

Here you go. I found some good stuff in level 1, a fairly small thing in level 2, and absolutely nothing in level 3. User movie #638266238020257523
