It's enough to be 2nd to warrant Star possibility. (Which is why it's actually useful with 2 players.) Otherwise I wouldn't have raised the point. Probability of occurence increases with lower positions, but you'd manipulate things your way anyway, so that's not as relevant. Andreas

Perhaps a full amazing run is a good idea, eh? A little of every trick?

Whatever is done I'd sure like to see it. Maybe you could include the lame shortcuts as a bonus feature.

http://www.mariokart64.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1141136531/43#43 so as i said , maybe i can give tips to someone here who d work on a smk tas run , and maybe i can only try to do a save states tas run playing with keyboard or controller* (means no advanced frame or slow motion or whatever) *if my skills with keyboard are not good enough i think its not a mess to play , pause , then save state then play again , open state ... etc its doable but i dont like frames by frames idea of playing it especially a perfect noob as i am in tas run

Zodd, try one lap and see how it goes. You dont need to play with frame advance if you are uncomfortable with it. Try playing at 3 or 5% speed. Don't give up!

Usually you can check your shortcut key needs on http://tasvideos.org/UsingEmulatorTools.html but I noticed now that the info for Snes9x is outdated. Press "+" or "-" to change speed.

Using frame advance can make it really hard to get a sense of your momentum/speed. For racing games sometimes playing at even 25-50% is easiest. Of course, for maximum optimization, you'd want to use frame advance, but then you have to be prepared for an exhorbitant amount of rerecords (like saturn's 13k just to do 1 race in FZero).

I think it'd be helpfull if a good TASer made a webcam video showing he goes about working on a TAS. If your unfamilar with all shortcuts and good ways to set up a config it can be a very clunky and slow process.

Zodd did you test my suggestion? I get the feeling you are not that interested working on this project..

However there is one question: Should we make a exception for this game and use a SRAM save-file ONLY to have the 150cc mode enabled because without one you can only play on 100cc and this is slower and surely not that entertaining and hard.
I would start from this SRAM. It has the gold medals necessary to unlock 150cc mode (which I agree would be better to play than 100cc mode) and nothing else, no time trial times and especially not anything that can affect your racing capabilities or increase the speed the game starts up (because there is no such thing that can be in the SRAM). I think if the resulting movie is entertaining enough then an exception would be made for it, and if you're going to make this movie (and I hope you do) then of course you'd want to make it entertaining anyway.
good luck zodd ^^;;

i have a problem with the emu, i confused with the keys , maybe hit the wrong buttons , and now the rom always works like turbo, no manner to retrieve it working back correctly ps ; i havent started the run yet , maybe i can start when i have no problem with the rom i tried to open the rom (forced low rom )no results i tried to adjust the speed with the hotkeys after that problem but it has no more influence now (even if the change of the speed displays).. i think there is something in the memory of my pc that makes the emu boosts, fastest solution would be to format my pc and the emu will work correctly but maybe not , for example , i cant install msn messenger now ..so to format the pc cant solve everything i remember now yashar why i gave up since a few days , this is because of this problem i got with the emu :/ to format my pc will take long (the reinstall) and i wouldnt like to do it i d like to fix this problem with another manner , but i am not an informatician expert if i could fix it within the emu directly that would be nice

Click options, display configuration, and make sure automatic frame skipping is checked. If that doesn't work, then click options, settings and make sure toggle fast-forward mode is unchecked. If that doesn't work then I have no idea what the problem is. Anyway you could always just use frame advance when you make the TAS and it won't matter if the emulator runs too fast.

One goal for a TAE (tool assisted entertainment run), could be to finish every race without being ranked out, but still end up in overall 8th place. I'm not sure how entertaining this would be, but it would be insanely difficult because the cpu tries to get people to finish in the same order they did in the first race of each cup. If you get 4th every time, you will have 5 points, so if you can make a different person get 1st everytime, and then the 2 other players get second once, you'll have last place. In practice that might be too hard, but you have several more second and third place points to give out as a buffer.

Wow impressive, I'll check that out now, thanks. Edit: Easier than I thought, due to the use of death, but still, nice.

posting on an ancient thread... but a speedrun for mario kart doesn't seem to have emerged and I have an idea of how to make one. I don't have time to make it now, but might in the Summer, these are my ideas at the moment:
Find out in the RAM where the: (speed, position, facing, height, vertical speed, number of coins) for the player-kart are stored. Divide the map into 'time-zones' each with a 'frames-to-cross' roughly along the route by hand: Then have a bot brute force search (breadth first) all the input combinations, with some pruning. Prune a 'search node' if:
the kart in one of the other search nodes got to the next time zone less than 'frames-to-cross' frames ago -- prune out slow ones the kart in another search node had roughly the same (speed, position, facing, height, vertical speed) currently or in some frame this lap, as these are sorta duplicates. Also, if the kart in the other search node and this one got to the same place at about the same frame, prune the one with less coins.
Choosing which power up to get can be done by hand, and a 'zone' similar to the 'time-zones' should be made, within which the bot can use the power up.
On a powerful computer left running for a week or so, this may produce good results. What do people think? Am I crazy? ;-)
