Wasn't the wall to Boom Boom somewhat short, though? Then again, even for that amount of time, I can see how that would take longer. And I believe the Whistle is after the spikes, right? That would certainly take much longer doing it that way (but that is still possible, right?). I remember back some time some guy mentioning the 4th Warp Whistle appearing within that wall...somewhere before the one you're supposed to get.

To get to boomboom, you jump through the wall before the spike room, the first room. Yea, but if you jump through the wall in the spike room, you go by the whistle, which takes a long time to go that path... i think if you keep sliding through you go to boomboom. Flying up to get the whistle by going through the door up there is much faster than the alternate methods. But it was a good idea. I thought the exact same thing a long while ago.

Hi all, I've been watching TASes for a long time, but this is the first time I've actually tried to make one. I wanted to give myself a fairly easy challenge that would still produce something entertaining to watch, so I made a run of the first level of SMB3 in which I attempt to minimize the number of frames I spend touching the ground or a normal platform, not counting frames during which I am still in the starting position. I managed it in 3; I really want 2 to be possible, and it might be, but I can't figure it out. You can find the .fm2 at www.techhouse.org/~jake/smb3lava.fm2. This being my first attempt at any kind of tool-assisted anything, it is pretty sloppy (though not in terms of the goal of the run). For some reason I don't press start or move to level 1 on the map screen very quickly; I forgot that I did that and started working on it, and then when I noticed i didn't want to redo it all just to make that better. It seems like it should be possible to fix, since no important state changes during the bad part, but I don't know how. The very end was incredibly frustrating; I tried being big there but it doesn't help. I also thought of trying to bring another shell, from one of the green koopas much earlier in the level, but I don't know if it's possible to pick one up without touching the ground, and even if you can, it would come back to life too soon and there's nowhere to drop it and pick it up again. I did this entirely on my own (I didn't even re-watch the mario 3 TAS before I started) so I don't use any fancy tricks or anything. If there's a glitch I don't know about that could save a frame of touching the ground, let me know! If people enjoy this, I might do more levels, or some other wacky challenge. Let me know what you think!

Going the opposite route, would a 'minimum number of frames spent in the air' challenge produce interesting results?

I posted a new thread containing the following and was instructed to move it here: Hi all, I've been watching TASes for a long time, but this is the first time I've actually tried to make one. Somehow I enjoyed it, it sure is a wacky goal choice to say the least. But try to optimize it before you post, or we would think you are just wasting your and our time, like some recent Sonic runs... But if it is the case, here are some ideas for you: Super Mario Bros. 3 pacifist, try to finish the game without killing the bosses. Super Mario Bros. 3 jumpless, try to finish the game without pressing the A button.
I am old enough to know better, but not enough to do it.

The first goomba of the game would like to have a word with you. :p

There is an extra warp whistle hidden in the walls of World 1 Fortress. How about if we use the Japanese version of the game and go through the walls by crouching while big and barely touch the spiked ceiling and you run slow through the walls and you have to act quickly and there you go. 2 warp whistles. You can skip 1-3 this way. differences in time: lose 30 seconds due to the load times in the Japanese version, less than the time taken in 1-3, saving you time including 2 seconds from the load time of the level in the US version. That's a gain of about 7 seconds. But is it possible?

As soon as you get a whistle, the level ends, and then the castle crumbles. How would you get the 2nd one?

It is in the walls in the room with the spikes. If you seen a YouTube video in when someone used a Game Genie and grabbed the blocks like they're blue bricks, you know what I mean.

There are two whistles, however, it would be impossible to gain both in any manner possible.

I'm pretty sure they're both the same whistle.

I agree; on vgmaps.com you can see the whistle room located there, but it's the same room you teleport to when you get the whistle the normal way. This is all on the US version, but I'm skeptical there's a version with 2 whistles on the same level.

It's possible to do a walkathon of Super Mario Bros. 3. Get the warp whistle in 1-3, get the warp whistle from world 2, then warp to world 8. If possible, can you get the warp whistle from world 1 fortress without the raccoon power?

I think if you read the above posts, there seems to be a way (that is, walk through walls to get it -- but what do I know)

The only way one could get through the wall in the room with the spikes would be to drop though a block to get into the floor, which is not possible at walking speed. It's not possible to get up on the ceiling to get the whistle the normal way without having the tail. It's too high to wall jump, and in any case, wall jumping also requires running speed. If anyone's motivated to do it, I would like to see a walkathon with the route mentioned above (whistles from 1-3 and world 2).

Yeah, I realized that after I posted... that's what I get for being a smartass. BUT MAYBE... you could get a p-wing from the secret toadhouse from 1-4! The only question is whether you can get 44 coins in 1-4 without the b button. From this video it looks like you can do it without having to hit bricks with your tail, so I guess the only question is whether you can make the jumps. I might have to try this later :) Er, I guess the other problem is using the p-wing and whistles in your inventory, since you need to press b to get at them :( This seems like a familiar conversation for some reason... Edit: Oh yeah, here: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6533&highlight=

Proof of concept! http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/370022856/smb3-b-5-frames-alden.fm2 Presses B for 5 (non-contiguous) frames. No other button is pressed along with B. Not played well at all. Proof that I am crappy at video games. Some of the later levels, especially the last fortress, were pretty hard without B. So will anyone step up to the plate and refine this? :) I sure as hell won't.

Nice find! As to the B button use, I'm in favor of interpreting walkathon to mean "no using B to enhance speed" rather than preventing tail flips or certainly item use. Others should weigh in if they feel differently, of course... While I'm posting in this thread, andymac, adelikat and I are making (slow) progress on the warpless improvement...up to World 4...

Well, with this route tail flips are not needed... and there does not seem to B any way to beat the game without B, so I think restricting it to only opening chests and your inventory for this reasonably fast route is the best way to go (rather than the previously proposed 1 2 6 7 8 route that only used B to open inventory, not chests). Edit: I also think it would be cool to turn the hammer bros on world 1 to a coin ship since I think you can do both by getting 44 coins in 1-4 (you wouldn't go in the coin ship obviously)

As I can't watch these vids right now, I don't know what you did, but know a couple things. I don't know if you finally succeeded in getting the whistle within the spiked wall, but another guy who did some testing with a Game Genie code that allows removal of wall tiles grabbed them both (reaching the second one before being returned to the map), but he still ended up with only one.

Just thought of something: Why not do a B-button less run in SMA4? In that game, L opens your inventory, not B. You still wouldn't be able to open chests, though.
