This TAS is 81 frames faster than the previous TAS due to mixing in the third room instead of the first, which allows for better movement and lag reduction in all 3 rooms.

About the run

  • Aims for fastest completion
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Manipulates luck
  • Warps to the credits
  • Genre: Platformer

Room 1

Deciding not to mix in this room allows Kirby to carry the speed from the slide through nearly the entire room, and destroying enemies by leveraging invincibility frames helps to reduce lag.

Room 2

Inhaling and exhaling to destroy enemies reduces lag, and not having Stone yet allows Kirby to inhale the Bronto Burt instead of floating, which would be significantly slower.

Room 3

Destroying the Poppy Bros. Jr. and Waddle Dee reduces lag, and setting up the mix below a ledge allows Kirby to slide into the mix, letting him move to the right a significant amount while inhaling.
Jumping for one frame with the right X subpixel and speed allows Kirby to clip through slopes, and entering the water from the side permits the usage of Stone underwater, which crashes the game. Pausing on the same frame the game crashes can - rarely - take Kirby to the credits, finishing the game in well under a minute.

Darkman425: Claiming for judging.
Darkman425: Both the submission text and video commentary helped out a lot with highlighting where time was saved and where lag was reduced. I'm surprised how much of a relatively large time save this TAS has over the older publication. It's always cool to see a new set of eyes finding improvements in old runs, especially if it's a rerouting of room movements and when to use mix. Nice work, and congratulations on improving on a nearly 8 year old publication!
Accepting to Standard.
Spikestuff: Poyo~!
Darkman425: Setting the submission to Delayed upon the author's request as they seek further improvements.

Would it be a stretch to argue that only 18 days into 2025 we already have a "TAS of the Year" candidate? (Or at least a candidate for the best NES TAS of 2025...)

I've been following your userfiles and loved seeing the hard work you put into optimizing this game. You blew our run out of the water, pun intended! Your explanation video was helpful (though I had to rewind a lot to take in both your commentary and what was happening in the run) and showed the many nuances of KA's physics you were able to take advantage of. Seems you have a knack for solving these laggy early Kirby speedruns; hope we see more from you. Someone's got to tackle a Kirby Super Star improvement, no pressure there though.

Definitely one of the greatest game end glitch TASes. The author also made a clean and simple explanation of what is going on. A strong Yes vote of course!

Agreed, it's been forever since we've seen any progress regarding that @~@; This is epic though. I voted Yes, looking forward to seeing an improvement to the any% run if possible.
Yaaay, I'm an active player now! :D (as of 11/9/2024) Thanks to TASVideos for the support, they're awesome.
I'm Asumeh, semi-expert SMB1 TASer. :) Check out some of the TASes I don't submit/upload to TASVideos on my YouTube channel, if you'd like. In progress: - Extra Mario Bros. (redo) (with HappyLee and w7n) - I'm currently assisting with finding improvements before the boss. On hold; we're currently struggling to confirm that we have the fastest route. Some debugging may also help with finding glitch exits, but neither of us are experts in that field. - Record my older TASes (excluding any obsolete TASes) and upload to YouTube. - Pretty busy at the moment... Check out my other links here. (Mostly WIP hehe)

Great TAS, and I love the explanation video comparing to the previous TAS and showing where time was saved. Very cool! It's always amazing seeing more than an entire second taken off of an already short run. Nice work!

Okay but where is the frame war edit: If someone can throw a Lua script at me for BizHawk (MUGG's Lua script doesn't works while TAStudio is opened) or FCEUX I might check the TAS out edit2: Without Lua script, I watched the movie looks very impressive, very optimized! I've tried a bunch of different tricks in room 1 and none of them saved time: - 1st enemy action (explode earlier (this TAS), explode later, jump) - different jumping sequence (lag manipulation) But I could save 1-2 frames right at the end, when inhaling (U) and exhale (B) at the end. I don't know how to optimize the end of the room (after exhaling, 2-3 frames of R, empty, more R and dash to end), so I will upload 2 different version: V2 exhale at frame 897 - 2 frames saved User movie #638734043701335756 V3 exhale at frame 893 - 1 frame saved User movie #638734044089430066 This TAS exhales at 899. Note that the optimizable part is combination of: - timing of inhale and exhale - Y pos manipulation with A - X pos manipulation - Lag manipulation edit: This means it's not a definitive comparison point. The movie won't sync after this, and note that in this game, sometimes a single frame save might not possible to carry over through the other rooms. I personally think this TAS should be accepted, as there is no definitive proof it's improvable with this. (You are free to use these userfiles, no need for authorship/credits) (also sorry for the wall of text)

Good job saving those two lag frames. I tried redoing the second room to see if the frames would be lost, but it was actually more cooperative, allowing me to go at full speed without slowing down to compensate for lag like in my original movie. Similar story in the third room, saving 5 more frames for 9 saved overall. https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/638735213527052215 Might be best to pause publication for now. I'll wait a few days to see if any more improvements are found and then edit the run description and commentary video to reflect the changes next week.

9 saved overall.
Very nice! I downloaded "ka_viewer.lua" maybe from keyword. I'm currently trying some different minor X pos sacrifices in room 2 and trying to understand how does Kirby gets powerups from inhaling enemies (needed for room 3) Here's what I've tried without success: * room 2 start: sacrifice X pos before 1st red enemy while 2nd enemy "green slime on top of the hill" comes forward to us. --> Always slower or same time as your new movie, no matter if I sacrifice 1 frame at the end of room 1. (in Kirby's Adventure, sometimes you can sacrifice a single frame at the end of the level to get 1 lag frame fewer in the next room). * room 2 spitting star after jumping with different starting: 3 frames slower * room 3: get hit by monkey, kill 3rd enemy with invincibility --> many frames slower * room 3: inhale 3 enemies: no success to pull it off

An amazing improvement to a run I thought was almost perfected! Here's a lua script for TAStudio logging, unfortunately the branch comparision is not working properly. Select branch to compare with P and M. User movie #638735711231534860 Currently I don't have motivation for TASing, so best luck guys!

Question, how does someone trigger the "ability roulette" where you can stop and pick stone? I inhaled the first 3 enemies at once in room 3 and I still get fire. Is it only works if I inhale the one eyed guy (4th enemy in room 3) and someone else in combination? I read gamefaqs but have no idea who is Rocky, definitely doesn't matches the one I see on Kirby Wikis. edit: my current inhale order: Monkey, Fire guy and Two eyes guy (same order as appearing in the room) edit2: - same with different order: Monkey, Two eyes guy, Fire guy - same with only Two Eyes guy and Fire guy - same with Flying guy (5th enemy) and One eyed guy edit3: thanks Chanoyu! Ok so I need a different strategy idea then :)

You get the roulette when you inhale two enemies that would both individually give an ability if swallowed. In room 3, the first ones to do that are that fire guy and the fourth enemy.

I couldn't find any improvement for DarkRiolu27's latest movie. Very optimized route and positionings/timings. Good job DarkRiolu27! The only thing I will try today is the final wall clipping before falling water, will edit this post once I'm done testing it. edit: found nothing, great as it is :) For corrupt ending, change from S to L+R+S @ frame 2058
