Darkwing Duck is a platform game in which the titular character fights his way through 7 stages, defeating bosses along the way.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Bizhawk 2.10
  • Aims to complete all 7 stages as quickly as possible
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Manipulates enemy drops

Comments

This Game Boy version of Darkwing Duck gets quite laggy in places. Most notably from multiple projectiles, but even basic movement will sometimes slow things down fairly unpredictably. For those reasons, I bet a more patient soul could improve this TAS.
I also don't think the arrow weapon glitch from the NES version works here. At least, I couldn't get anything to happen from my testing.
Fairly standard platformer otherwise. Probably the trickiest consideration in routing is deciding where and when to plow through enemies versus killing them for drops or avoiding them.

nymx: Claiming for judging.
nymx: Uploading a revised version that fixes all the menu delays.
nymx: Well, the menuing corrections have made a big difference. It finally puts you faster than the WR. From my best calculations, it appears you are about 28 seconds faster than the WR...in terms of game play only. If it was timed from power on, it would be more like 42.5 seconds. But...it was a fun little run that took charge of the human inabilities. I also noticed the difference in how you managed Lag...which is one of my favorite optimizations to tackle. Well...everything looks good here.
Accpeting to standard.

In this version arrow less powerful than NES version? You used heavy gas against two bosses and it's look like very fast strategy, but later you take arrow

Hey this looks familiar. It still looks pretty fast, but it looks like there are multiple lag spikes in certain levels; are these fixable, or simply unavoidable? Still a yes vote.

Both do 2 points of damage on hit. Heavy gas can hit twice from one use if it's launched in the right time/place, because it lasts long enough that the enemy's invincibility frames expire. So it's useful if resources are low, because you don't need to manipulate as many enemies for resource drops. Arrow's big advantage is the range, and its use in platforming. Downside is you can only have 2 arrows out at once, and sometimes an enemy might be damageable while both are still on screen. Put another way, I'm not totally sure which would be fastest. :) I know the NES version goes straight for the arrow, but that seems mainly because it allows for clipping.

Some probably are, but I found the lag unpredictable at times. At the more predictable end, killing enemies is almost always slower than just getting hit and moving on, but balancing that approach with health drops is a routing challenge. Less predictable is that inputs -- jumping, alternating left/right, and especially shooting -- often leads to lag. Especially with more sprites on screen. I think it's likely there's time to be saved by timing enemy kills so that the weapon sprites are around for as few frames as possible, but that would have to be balanced with enemy drop manipulation.

good watch, tried to TAS it as a side-side-side object but discarded it pretty early on.. YES vote for me. do you have a ram watch of important values that you could share perhaps?

I am the terror that flaps in the night, I am that one lag frame you can never get rid of, I am Darkwing Duck! I was a big fan of the show as a kid, yet I never knew about any of the games, I would probably have played them a lot. It's weird how they always go with Steelbeak as the big bad, when most people would tell you that Negaduck is Darkwing's true nemesis. Does he even appear in any game? But I have to say, this game looks surprisingly good, I especially like the enemy variety, it keeps things fresh and is not something you usually get in this type of game. The TAS looks pretty good, but I imagine it must be hell to optimize this game. Good job tackling the challenge, that's a "yes" vote from me!
Current project: Gex 3 any% Paused: Gex 64 any% There are no N64 emulators. Just SM64 emulators with hacky support for all the other games.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but everybody is focused on the game play itself. Yes, it is fast...but there are serious menuing issues here. I have held onto this submission for a few days to test out some things. So far, at the start of game play, I am 879 frames ahead of this submission. In addition, these same errors occur throughout the game where menuing exists. ninespaces...I have performed a sync test, and they are not carrying through. I want to extend an opportunity for you to clean this up. How long do you think it will take to resync upon fixing these issues. Here is an improvement file to see what I have done to accomplish faster menuing. User movie #638865886986995856
I recently discovered that if you haven't reached a level of frustration with TASing any game, then you haven't done your due diligence. ---- SOYZA: Are you playing a game? NYMX: I'm not playing a game, I'm TASing. SOYZA: Oh...so its not a game...Its for real? ---- Anybody got a Quantum computer I can borrow for 20 minutes? Nevermind...eien's 64 core machine will do. :) ---- BOTing will be the end of all games. --NYMX

That's not bad news at all, thanks very much for letting me know! I've updated the TAS. Some parts synced back up OK, but the lag frames really threw things off in other places. It's still largely identical in terms of the platforming though. User movie #638866786192802210

Thanks. I've uploaded the new file and will continuing analyzing your run. Should be this weekend, before I finalize it.
