This may have been discussed already, but the topic is too large for me to feel like digging through. Sorry. :/ Level 1-2 is the only one in these runs that visits the dark world to glitch an item pickup. I'm thinking it may be a good idea to grab a coin while there so that, in the slot machine at the end, you can skip straight to the failure music, cutting off about a second of time. Good idea? Or Bad idea?
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

The "let's see your luck!" music at the slot machine screen plays regardless of whether you have coins or not, and so does the "sorry no bonus" music (or in case of coins and a win, the "bonus!" music, which would be longer). However, when you have coins, the "let's see your luck!" music plays on background, and is interruptible, so I think your idea might actually work.

Interesting, although I assume it would be a bit slower. (time taken to grab the coin, time taken to fail the bonus) EDIT: I suggest a level with Toad because he picks up items the fastest from the ground. I would think level 1-2 would be a good place to check it out.

worth testing tho if it saves a single frame, it saves a frame

I just did some quick tests; it takes the same amount of time to finish the bonus game whether you have coins or not. Even though the first music is cut off almost immediately, there's a longer pause after the second music that adds delay. I would say that there's some sort of frame rule here, i.e. the game will finish at set increments no matter how fast/slow you complete the game.

The glitch that is used to pass through the ground, as shown in the digging stages, can be used here too: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1050666049/GlitchMan-Super%20Mario%20Bros.%202%20%28U%29%20%28PRG1%29%20%5B%21%5D-W4-1.fm2 This occurs at the end of the first room when I throw the vegetable at the enemy. That allows me to pass through the ice. I think there are more places that this glitch can be used.

I couldn't seem to open it. I'm curious is this useful in the warp run?

You can open it. FCEUX gives a warning, but if you click OK, it plays just fine. I am not sure that is a time saver in that instance. But at least for a warpless run, there has to be places to exploit it. All I have to say is "Holy crap! Nice find."

Has anyone tried using the time stopper item in order to kill any of the bosses faster? Would getting this item manipulate their positions in favorable ways possibly?

An excellent example of putting this to good use. Someone test it!!! Maybe use it to manipulate when Birdo fires his first egg.

I discovered a glitch which will probably help in a future TAS. If you are riding a magic carpet, and you throw an item that destroys a Pidget on another magic carpet, the carpet you're riding will start going really fast. Demonstration: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1687070027/smb2_pidgetglitch.fm2 This happened to me while playing the game on the Wii. Again, funnily enough.

...Wait, that's never been done in a TAS before? I think I've done that several times, actually, but I never thought much of it until now.

wow, I've never seen that before. I wonder why that happens. Also, I wonder how many spots that could be used in.

I experimented with this a little bit more, and it also works if you're riding a carpet, get the Pidget to respawn, and pick the other Pidget off its carpet while you're riding yours. Edit: Demonstration of the trick on 1-2: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/197600381/Pidget21.fm2 Unfortunately it doesn't affect your vertical speed at all, so it's useless in 3-1. Edit 2: I experimented more, and apparently, if you go through a door while riding a carpet, your feet freeze in place for the rest of the game! You can't walk or duck anymore, you have to get around by jumping. So I'm guessing there's a "carpet riding" flag which gets accidentally left on in that case. So the mach carpet trick would be a case of unsetting that flag while you're still on the carpet, making the game think you're on solid ground instead.

I can't watch the fm2 right now. I'm curious though... do you think doing that can save time in 1-2 for the warp run? I'm just curious. I like how time savers like this seem to pop up and that I've never considered.

I think that it can save time in the warpless run. The tough part is setting it up quickly, that is, getting Pidget to respawn as fast as possible, , but I have faith that someone will be able to pull it off. It lets you run through the air at or faster than the normal speed of Toad running while holding something, rather than slow jumping to get the carpet to move faster. And since you're going much faster, the carpet lasts much longer, and (as shown in the fm2) you can pick things up while riding the carpet, so you can snag that potion needed for the birdo trick without dismounting the carpet.

wow umm... That looks like it should save time for the warp run. Now to think of a way to do that a bit quicker. EDIT: With the test run I just did it looks like some time can definitely be saved. EDIT2: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1397416841/smb2_warp_improvement.fm2 ctrlaltdestroy, I'm glad you mentioned this. :) Also ^ the above link should be improvable. I didn't spend much time.

I'm pretty sure the only carpets are 1-2 and 5-3, which can be improved using this, and 3-1, which can't.

Really nice find! I tried the same example in level 1-2 for some time and in the end enter the boss room 75 frames faster than the current published run, although precision, lag reduction and glitch abuse can definitely can be a bit faster. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1782688691/Super%20Mario%20Bros%202%20%28U%29%20%28PRG%200%29carpet_trick.fm2

Out did me, nice. I didn't know the exact conditions for how the glitch was to be performed. I wonder if it'd be faster to pick up an enemy at the end rather than going a bit farther with the carpet.
