I used VBA-rerecording-10 emulator to record this tool-assisted speedrun of Megaman & Bass. The main goal of this was to make this TAS as fast as possible. I picked M&B because there wasn't any complete run of it yet and hoped that someone(s) would get interested in making TASes of it. Since this is my very first TAS it's most definitely not perfect but that's why I'm hoping that someone will make a faster one of it. I don't abuse any bugs in it (or atleast not to my knowledge) because i didn't do much research when i started it. I did this TAS in GBA because its my first one and I had just gotten aquainted with this GBA emulator.
I guess this game doesn't need much refereeing since Megaman name is quite well known. Well, for those who haven't ever seen this, it hases the same graphics as Megaman 8 and sounds should be similar to Megaman 7. The game hases 8 normal bossstages (like the previous ones), beginning level and three "end stages" where the second one is kinda divided in three parts (3 bosses). One new feature in this game is the shop where you can buy abilities etc. for your character with screws you have found in previous levels.
I played this TAS with Megaman. There isn't really any good reason for this. I just picked one of them. Maybe Megaman because it's easier to "boost" with Megaman in the GBA version (down+A) than Bass (>+>). Although Bass would have been nice choise since this is the first Megaman where you can choose which character to use. The order in which i beat bosses is: Cold Man, Burner Man, Pirate Man, Ground Man, Tengu Man, Magic Man, Astro Man and Dynamo Man. I beat every boss so that i didn't take any damage which leads to that this run can be done atleast a bit faster. During the normal levels I take damage only when it's the fastest possible way to clear that point. In the beginning i didn't remember to turn around just before the hit to "back up" forward, but in the end i rty to use that as much as possible.
Few other minor mistakes which I have noted: -In the beginning i didn't remember to turn around just before the hit to "back up" forward -In the battle with Burner Man I should have used more Ice Wall, like I did in the second fight with him. -In Pirate Man stage i should have used Wave Burner to kill those "floorcrawling" monsters to be able to slide more. -I have shoten few miss (& unneeded) shots for example in the Cold Man stage. -Some jumps ma be imperfect and so reducing the time which sould be used in sliding. I have tried to learn from these mistakes, so there's not so much of these in the latter part of the game.
I didn't went for any shopping since I though it wouldn't pay for the time it takes (atleast not for Megaman). For all of you who haven't played this enough (or not at all), in some places there are these hole in the ground so if I cease slidingfor small jum and continue sliding after that you can be pretty sure i just jump over that kind of hole.

Truncated: Rejected for being clearly suboptimal.

Actually, the shop existed already in Mega Man 7. And a shop existed in 8, but the bolt system was a little different. But the first Mega Man game that had a shop was even earlier than that: Mega Man IV for the Game Boy.

Pressing the start button on the Robot Master selection screen in Mega Man 7 brings you to the shop.

Apparently. I wasn't 100% sure, so I looked it up. Apparently the website I checked was wrong, because it said the shop is accessed by pressing "start" from the stage select screen. I just now checked on a ROM, and Select it was. Bah, stupid misinformation.

Not so bad for a first attempt... But Highly improveable... really really... Since it's your first TA it's understandable but... you still did a good job

I was thinking to start makeing TAS of Megaman & Bass with Bass, but since this isn't likely to be published, I'm really not sure that should i start it. Because there are only few places which I can do faster than in this run. Plus I'm quite busy with my school right now... :(

It'd still be nice to find out which character can beat the game faster.

I'd guess Megaman because of his charged megabuster and he can slide under obstacles which will take more time to jump over. Although Bass can jumb while boosting so that gives him also a good advantage. Only makeing a TAS will tell ;)

Heh, in the other thread it was said that Bass loses so much time in his "get the power" animation.

I think that it would gives approximately the same time.... They have the same sliding speed, though bass can double jump and megaman is much stronger with his charged buster (moreover he may be able to slide under certain things, thus saving little time) Moreover Bass can't move while firing and this is annoying :) So... in fact yes, it would be worth which one can beat it fatser (having written all that text to think the same thing... silly me)

I just got inspired and made a testrun with Bass. And now I'm starting to think it would be faster with Bass ;) even though the boost doesn't come along to the second jump (A+A). Anyways, I uploaded it for everyone to see why i think it could be faster. Here's the link: http://koti.mbnet.fi/maza-/MegaMan_&_Bass_-_Bass.vbm

It might just be me, but that test run is way more exciting than the rockman run. It looks like Bass moves faster, even if he doesn't. Also, more tricks are possible with bass's double jump too.

Bass looks like moving faster because he does, atleast when he's jumping ;) since bass can boost and jump while keepping up the good speed (except in the doublejump), while Megaman can only slide to go faster.

Hey, do you think a 100-CD run would be interesting to watch?

You'd need to return to some levels after going through them once... And you'd also need to reset the system to be able to play with the other character (since you cant get every CD with just one), so you'd end up playing the game through twice in one speedrun. So i don't think it would be anything special to watch.

That's just what would make it so special to watch. There'd be a lot more strategy involved in getting the right equipment and deciding who will access what when, rather than just racing through everything once.

Bass has to be faster. Not just for his dash jumps, but because of his overall mobility. I'm sure he has access to shortcuts that Mega Man doesn't. The charged shot doesn't really help much in terms of speed. It'll help in the first boss fight, but after that you're using special weapons; which Bass also can do. What I find interesting is that Mega Man has the, "as long as there's fewer than 3 shots on the screen you can shoot every other frame" gun, but Bass can access this advantage as well by switching to a special weapon. I haven't played this game in a long time, so I'm a little sketchy on details. I know in MM8 you could get an item that improves Mega Man's sliding speed. I can't remember if it's also available in MM&B and I'm not even sure it'll make much difference (compared to Bass, that is). Split screen? Even possible?

Yeah, it exists. Thing is, there's an item speeding up Bass's dash too.

KennyMan666, you are incorrect. There isn't such item for Megaman which allows him to slide faster. But Bass do have an item which increases his boost speed. The only item that may be worth buying for Megaman (in my oppinion) is the one which allows him to charge up his Megabuster faster. This would propably help in the final bosses, but how much? that's not for sure. But Bass, he has lot's of items which could help in speedrun. Faster dash, Faster ladderclimbing, maybe the Morph with Treble and also maybe one of his shooting skills (shots goes through walls for example).
