I'm surprised no one has done this cool game before me. I've started a WIP of this game in very hard (the hardest possible). It ends just after the first boss. If you're familiar with this game, you may have noticed that I haven't skipped the introduction fighting scene. Why ? Just because if you collect every legendary sword in the game you can increase your power at the very end ^^ I've lost some seconds in the first level too to pick up the sword, and also a minute or something like that because of this fu***** machine you have to destroy. The boss was easy but he's a little bit long to beat because of his annoying arm. I hope you'll enjoy the movie :) Here's the link : Here or here The rom used is Sparkster (UJ) [!] on Gens v2.12b test 9f and the movie is 34698 frames, 391 records and 9min38 long. Of course let me know what do you think of this first try ! Enjoy ! :)

Well, I think you've never played Sparkster on Genesis. SNES and Genesis versions are COMPLETLY different ;)

Is anybody working on a speedrun for this game? I've seen a couple of threads on it, one of which had a WIP movie, but the links to the movie had both expired. It seems a pity that the SNES version has had more exposure than the Megadrive game. (Please note I'm not talking about Rocket Knight Adventures - I know there can be confusion.)

Isn't SNES version better?

It may be, but the games are so different that it'd be like saying it's a shame Mario got more exposure than Taz Mania. Personally I'd love to see a speedrun of this, the rocket pack the protagonist possesses should make for some amazing arial acrobatics. Plus I could never finish the game and want to see how it's done. :)

I might start this, but I never did get all the swords for the secret ending. Actually, I never got to the ending on a console, just some robot-walker stage boss I vaguely remember. I'll try later, I have summer vacation so I need something to do anyway.

He's right, the Genesis version of Sparkster is completely different than the SNES version, and if I ever learn how to TAS, I was thinking of doing this game.
Signature under contruction, still.

Manga_Maniac: you may want to use dehack's microstorage in case the link goes dead when someone in future decided to revisit this thread. EDIT: I just realised the link was made in 2005... it's long dead. Oh well...

Good luck. Be sure to use frame advance (a game of this needed precision is absolutely necessary). Also, look up information regarding the game mechanics (glitches, etc.) Also here are a couple of older threads you can look at for some information: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2794 http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3678

Good luck. Be sure to post some movies of your work in progress (WIP) so that anyone interested can give feedback.

Don't expect to create your final run on the 1st try. Make a draft 1st and post it. Actually, you make several drafts taking different routes and compare the results. Also, does your run plan to get the Seven Swords and get Gold Sparkster? Getting Gold Sparkster would take longer (especially since you have to play the Robot Mech fight in the intro), and you don't get Gold Sparkster till the final boss. Gold Sparkster sure owns the final boss though.

That's fun I was planning to try this game too... maybe because of the current Rocket Knight Adventure Submission... Anyway I'm glad someone noticed this game once again and I wish you good luck...

When you want to TAS a game, and your knowledge is lacking, it is often helpful to use online resources like gamefaqs to find out what you need to know. (In this case, where all the swords are). GameFAQs guides are almost always useful for help planning TAS routes, but never trust their boss strategies -- they give strategies that are safe for unskilled players to use in real-time. TAS almost always opens up a whole array of new strategy possibilities.

Yeah, I also found ways to defeat some bosses in the game. And a glitch!

Oh and one more thing... Does every part have to be tool-assisted?

not necessarily (at least, I don't think), but your TAS will be of lower quality if you don't use frame advance and save states. I love this game, and I'd like to see a TAS of it as well :D

Eh. All parts have to be tool-assisted, no other options.

You thought the runs here were created in one day? Most of them took weeks and months to produce. Of course it will take a while, no-one expected you to do it fast.
