16-minute 16-star playthrough of the first and one of the most versatile, action oriented 3-D games for the N64.
This tool-assisted movie is over a minute faster than the original test run, and takes many shortcuts favorable over the original ones. Most of the saved time is an accumulation of bits and pieces of optimization through Mario's movement and straighter paths to whatever destination.
What was very fortunate was that I was able to record with an analog stick, thus making radial positioning much more precise and ultimately making many pathways faster.
Thanks to Micheal Fried, Weatherton, nitsuja, Atma, and GeminiSaint for the useful strategies.
Abuses glitches. Takes damage to save time.

This movie has gotten so much good feedback I can't wait to see it. Unfortunately I don't have the ROM and don't know where to find it, so I'll just have to wait for the avi. So can someone please, please, pretty please encode this to avi soon? :) I think it's quite obvious it's already accepted, as it has 29 YES votes as I'm writing this.

Well, they should be in the 100% run. Not really because they require some setting up to get the fastest possible time. If the mini-game runs are just part of a 100% run then they wouldn't be as fast.

OK, I got it to work, and I am AMAZED at the 3rd Bowser level. It's a wonder that poor Mario doesn't get motion sickness. Great movie!! A+++!

ok i'll vote yes... after i'm clarified about this: why didn't you take the star the bunny gives you? you can take it and he will still be there and usefull for the trick, won't he?

The star is not useful. There are no doors remaining that Mario needs stars to open. The last star is only acquired because it's needed to make the water shift away so that the last stage can be entered.

why did he get the other stars then? ok, the stars before the 8th one i know were needed to open the first door, but what about the other ones? all were needed to make the rabbit appear? couldn't he have ignored one of them and grab the rabbit star instead?

Logic permits that if he had ignored one of the ealier stars, Mipps wouldn't appear. Therefore, there would be no star to grab in stead of the earlier stars. Therefore, there would be no Mipps.

I'm glad my girlfriend doesn't read these boards, because she might get mad when I say that I want this movie to have my children because it is just that good. I used to play this game constantly, and I've even watched the 16-star run from SDA, but this movie just kept making me go "omg". This was pure entertainment the whole time. Just beautiful.

The rabbit's name is MIPS, btw. Not to downplay how cool this movie is, but I am also looking forward to seeing 120 and possibly 70 star runs. (Well, maybe there's no point to a 70 star run over a 120 star one, but I think the extra complexity of having to choose which 70 stars are fastest would still be interesting.)

That's how I thought it was spelled, but I decided to use the same misspelling as Zurreco. Incidentally, I always assumed that it stood for Millions of Instructions Per Second, which was a common performance measurement in those days and something that Nintendo was very proud of when they announced a system with a 100 MHz CPU (ended up being 93.75 MHz); much as Ermac stood for Error Macro in the Mortal Kombat series. I'm pleased to learn the true origin of the name.

I'm not sure why I don't seem to be able to vote for this (must still be considered a lurker? I dunno, I contributed strategies and have done an Outrun run for the Genesis but it desynched so I never submitted). Anywho, this is an excellent first stab at Mario 64 16 stars. I would definitely vote yes but with the understanding that this movie should be obsoleted by a more precise run. I saw several points that were likely inefficient: Board Bowsers sub (great job getting up there) slow down seemed to not be minimized and swimming angles a bit questionable. Bowser 2, I'm pretty sure doing Martin's strat of long jumping along the rim of the lava and then hopping straight into the funnel would be faster. Was jumping backwards so that you had to run in place for a moement on the first MIPS glitch really necessary? Opening the Bowser 2 door, I think you could save some frames by being in the middle when activating the door so Mario doesn't have to walk so far. There are other things as well, I just mentioned a few. Anyway, my criticims are minor. There may be some as of yet unexplored strats as well. (btw, I saw what appeared to be several unoptimized 180 degree turns). In any case, I definitely have to hand it to Spezzafer for nailing that nearly impossible jump on Bowser 3!! amazing :) *Edit, I can vote now, yippee*

Yep, amazing, and probably a good screenshot for when it gets published too :). I seriously think that frame by frame precision is going to be too much of a chore in most of these 3D games, because of all the possibilities of movement. I'm more concerned with finding the fastest route for the game, and the optimizations can come in a later run. I'm still trying to test out a route in Whomps Fortress (iin order skip activating the cannon completely), but with a lack of a game-pad and a laggy computer, it's no easy task. Anyways, big props to Spezzafer, and this movie deserves a star regardless if there are some minor frame by frame improvements (which will be improved later on, hopefully).

Truly amazing, definately a star... I don't know if it was tested, but getting 8 red coins and 100 rupees at Whomp's fortress might be faster than going to Cool cool mountain. - You don't need to go to Cool cool mountain and open the door and all. - Althought the 8 coins are scattered around the entire level, they can be collected pretty fast. - While you go around the entire level anyway, getting 100 coins should be doable. - You don't have to exit the level when you get the 100 coin star. - Seeing how fast the 8 rupees can be collected, in the first bowser world, it seems that coin stars are far more efficient in a TAS then in a regular speedrun, so this might also not take as much time as expected. I have no clue whether it's actually faster... the 2 stars at cool cool mountain looked very fast aswell, but should you make another version oneday, it might be worth testing.

Simply amazing. I, too, was curious as to how speedrunning would be affected with camera angles thrown into the mix. I even wondered if there was a way to "detach" and see the game from a perspective you weren't really meant to (a la recammed Quake films). I do have one serious question, though, which is what settings/resolution the rendered AVI would be at, since the emulator allows pretty much any number your monitor can take. IMAX (approx. 4000 X 3000 pixels) Mario 64 run, anyone?

Dang it, I really wish I didn't see SDA's demo... I'd be a lot more impressed then. Although its still good, I think I over hyped myself over this movie. Heh
