Hey everyone! Here comes my new and improved Mario Adventure run!
The movie was created with blip's FCEU and it
  • takes damage to save time
  • abuses glitches
  • aims for the fastest time
The movie uses the Super Mario Bros. 3 (U) (PRG1) rom, to which the IPS patch must be applied. You can find the patch at http://www.okimpala.com/download/mario_adventure_download.php
About the hack: Mario Adventure is a hack for Super Mario Bros. 3, and it's a pretty big one at that. There are 8 worlds like in the original, but in this hack there are no warp whistles, so you must complete all of the worlds to complete the game. Not only do you have to complete them, but you have to find the seven keys hidden in the levels (one in each World except for the last one). You can access the first 7 worlds whenever you want, but you can't enter world 8 until you have completed all the worlds and collected all the keys.
The hack also has a powerup switch box (meaning you can carry two powerups at a time), much like in Super Mario World. The difference is that you can switch between the powerups immediately without having to wait the powerup to float from the top of the screen. This makes for some interesting acrobatics as you can start flying in the middle of a jump and so on.
Mario Adventure also has some interesting powerups. The one you'll be seeing used he most in the movie is the magic wand. The magic wand turns Mario into Magic Mario, who can step on quite many enemies without getting hurt. Magic Mario's weapon is also very powerful and Magic Mario can take 3 hits before losing his powers. The fireflower has also been changed since SMB3, and in Mario Adventure Fiery Mario can jump higher than any other form of Mario. The star powerup has also been changed so that it enables Mario to get running speed immediately after getting the star.
Glitches: I use a glitch once or twice that enables me to take a hit without actually losing my powers. It involves switching powerups at the exact same time as I get hit. Somehow the game won't realize you got hit and willassume you still have your powerups. A more familiar glitch is the one used to go through walls. Check the SMB3 tricks page for more information about it.
EDIT#2: Another glitch I forgot to mention is the glitch that allows you to start a level from an unusual position. In some levels, if you hold left as the level is starting, Mario will appear in an abnormal starting location. I use this glitch in a level in world 2, and you can see me starting right in the middle of a pipe. I then continue to be exited from the wall and can start the level by entering the pipe straight away. Another place where I use this glitch is in the world 7 fortress, where I appear in a very advantageous position and I can cut about half of the stage right away.
About the movie:
I will now comment all of the worlds in detail:
World 1: I collect 300 coins in the first few levels which enables me to visit the toad house and buy a magic wand, which will be used throughout the game. In case someone is wondering: I don't exit the room with the key as soon as possible because I have to wait for the key to completely stop blinking if I want it to appear in my inventory.
World 2: Some nice glitches used here. I also used a music box to skip a level and some Hammer Bros.
World 3: A pretty boring world, but bear with me! I promise you it'll get more interesting. I used a star in one of the levels, which enabled me to get a good flying start on the level.
World 4: Yay! A whole world filled with Kuribo's Shoes! I had to get a fireflower from the toad house because I absolutely need the feather for the coin collecting level (it would be extremely slow without it) and a fireflower for the last level. I don't use music boxes here because it's faster to just beat the Hammer Bros.
World 5: A pretty straightforward world. The Hammer Bros. levels are nice and short so I don't have to use music boxes.
World 6: Colossal Classics is a great world. There's lots of versatility and you can see some familiar stages giagntified here.
World 7: World 7 is a whole other ordeal. It consists of many short levels, some of which can only be completed by collecting all the coins in the level or just simply waiting it out. The wait-it-out levels are extremely boring, and I recommend that anyone who watches this movie skips them. The key is gotten by using a whistle to go into a bonus level. I think I found the best route for the levels, but I didn't test every single combination.
World 8: Bowser's world consists of levels that have the themes of the first seven worlds. The last level is quite long but extremely fun to play. For anyone who is wondering: you CAN kill the Bowsers with a star but you can't complete the level if you do so. Bowser won't thump to the ground and the winning music won't play. You'll simply be trapped. In the final boss fight you first lose all your powerups and are then forced to take at least one fireflower. The final Bowser is first in the room above you, so you have to lure him to break the bricks so he'll drop down to you and then kill him with fireballs.
I really enjoyed making this run. I think the game is very good, and for a hack it is excellent. I have been given permission by Bisqwit to submit my run, so please don't tell me that the site does not accept hacks. I hope you judge the movie in its entirety, taking into account both the entertainment value of the hack itself and my playing. Please tell me what you think.
EDIT: Now I remember what I forgot: the credits! I would like to thanks Spoony Bard for introducing the hack to me and for a very important technique involving breaking bricks with my tail while ducking under a wall. Voted Yes. Gr8 Run, i actually enjoyed it. you aims for speed as well as entertainment. I like this hack, especially the new feature (Mario can use different modes between the game) There can be some improvement in this hack. 1) Better Graphic, It sux now. 2) Warps

Because of the nature of the game, warps would do nothing for this hack, since as far as I know, you cannot access World 8 without both having all of the keys and defeating all of the Koopa Kids. Warps would make no sense. And the graphics could be improved, but I wouldn't say they "sux." That's pretty harsh. Will vote later, though I've been following the WIP rather closely. There's little doubt that I'll be voting yes.

There are some parts where I don't understand why you slowed down, or bumped into something. I can't point you to a specific spot..that would require me watching the whole run again...

Sometimes I bump into walls because if I jump any earlier, I wouldn't get to running speed. Running speed can be conserved by jumping, so sometimes I run just enough to get running speed and then jump, even if I have to bump into something. Trust me, all of these places have been tested and it's faster with getting running speed. EDIT: And thanks for the positive comments everyone! I wasn't sure how this would be received because there has been some debating about the quality of the hack. Great to see at least some people are liking it.

Wow. I'm really glad you started your run over the first time; not only is this one much better, but it doesn't have the "saved money" problem your original had, which would have made it unsubmittable. Definite yes vote here.

I'm not sure whether to compare this hack to Air or Super Demo World. Either way I sometimes wonder if it tries to pack in more tricks than your average NES is rated for. Unless the coders made it intentional that the player not be able to see the floor in Lakitu Glacier or whatever that ice level was called... Magic Mario was kind of lame. Is there anything he can't jump on? But I digress. The hack is quite interesting, and I can't see any problems with this run. I suppose someone should some day try to figure the fastest path through Desert Dares, but as far as this run goes it's impressive enough to merit a publishing.

The hack itself was certainly interesting, and certainly there were many tricks in the game that I never expected. There were parts of the run that weren't very interesting, though, such as autoscrolling levels. Yes, Magic Mario was overpowered in this hack. I'll give this a yes vote, but I'm wondering if the run can be faster by doing the worlds in a different order. The point of the game's world select screen was not to force anyone to go in order. By the way, Dahrkdaiz mentioned that it was possible to put on and take off Kuribo's Shoes, but I could never get it to work. Does it work?

I believe the deal with Kuribo's Shoes is that you can find them in various places -- I think the item replaces the Frog Suit for inventory purposes -- and can equip them on the map, but unlike other powerups, you're locked as "Kuribo Mario" until you take a hit or complete the level, which is when it vanishes. Those are the only ways to remove it, and you can't switch it with your item box. I think that's how it works, anyway. I, too, am curious if changing world order would gain any speed, though I have a feeling the biggest optimization point will be finding the fastest route through Desert Dares. And for the record, after watching this, I very quickly voted "yes."

I fail to see how doing the worlds in a different order could improve speed, with the exception of maybe finding music boxes and other used items sooner. In the end he uses the magic wand and fire flower at each Koopa Kid and is returned to the starting point on the world selection map. Collecting coins and hitting the mushroom houses earlier would really be the only improvement. I think I just answered my own question...

I never thought about doing the worlds in another order. World 1 has the advantage of having stuff to kill the first Boom-Booms with (ice blocks, koopa shells) so I never have to kill a Boom-Boom with a fireflower or jumping on him. I'm not sure if other worlds have this option. World 4 or 5 might be a good choice because the Hammer Bros. stages are so short that it's not even beneficial to use music boxes there. So if you first did world 5 and 4, you might have the money to skip the world 1 Hammer Bros. when you get to them. EDIT: Wait, I do have to kill one Boom-Boom by jumping on him, it's the one in the fortress. About Desert Dares: since it's only advantageous to move in a certain pattern, there aren't really that many options. Some stages are additionally way too long to even consider, so I'm pretty confident that I have the best (or at least very close to the best) route. Thanks for all the comments!

I'm almost positive you use Up, Select, and B at the same time to store (and retrieve) a Kuribo Shoe. (it's indicated by a "K" on the lower left of the status bar.) I know you can store it somehow, since one of my savestates for Mario Adventure (before I stopped playing it due to a stupid inventory bug) had a K there, and I remember reading about it. :P

I liked your run. It was very entertaining. However, I am curious about your use of music boxes. You spend a lot of time buying them. In world 6, specifically, you encounter 2 hammer brothers that are on a scrolling border. When the map scrolls, you can skip the hammer brother anyways. Why do you use 2 music boxes there? If this is not clear, I can make a movie demonstrating it. This could probably be taken advantage of in other worlds if you can manipulate where the hammer brothers walk.

I'm not sure what you mean, scubed. How can you skip the hammer bros. when the screen is scrolling? I've never heard of such a trick. About manipulating them, I wasn't successfull in manipulating any of the hammer bros. Somehow one of them would always get in my way.

Whoa, I never knew about that! That's a really nice trick. I don't think I'll be making a new version any time soon but if I ever do, I'll be sure to use that if I get the chance.
