Saturn's Super Metroid RBO teasers gave me an idea. Why not make music videos of TASes? The idea is to take the more popular runs, edit them and add music to in a sense make a music video. I got Saturn's permission and used his Super Street Fighter 2 run (with Ken) for the first video. The run was originally 11:32. After editing, it is 5:02. I did it this way because the song I chose is long enough to fit the whole run in. I used Joe Darwish's Street Fighter 2: The Ken Song from OCRemix, and is 4:12 long. I was able to add a portion of the original Street Fighter 2 Ken music to the beginning to increase the song to 5:02. They fit together well, seeing as how the song and video are both about Ken. You can get the video here. The avi is about 47 mbs and is really good quality. The only thing I couldn't do was put the overlap screen on, the one that is at the beginning of each of the published runs and tells who played the run and how long it is. I could never figure out how to do that. So, what do you think? If enough people like it, maybe more of these will pop up around here.

I don't know, i think i would watch one that was made in toe jam & earl perhaps. And it must be played for that purpose, with video edit and everything.

Yeah, one game per video. I haven't seen the other topic so I didn't know someone already tried something like this.

Oh wow, I didn't know. In a way this is a little different, because this is about the runs themselves and not a commercial like thing. If this does happen to go somewhere, what other runs would people like to see redone like this?

It works really well with the Street Fighter movies. Bubble Bobble could be cut down to ten minutes just by cutting out the waits. Final Fantasy could be *really* short by playing just the battles. Punch-Out (both of them). Earthworm Jim (without the Andy Asteroids levels). Those are the ones that would really benefit just by cutting out the waits, anyway.

I've already made the song for punchout: http://www.adelikat.com/Miscellaneous.html If someone would "cut" my mtpo run and fit it to this, They would have my deepest admiration.

I really like this idea... If I learn how, I'm interested in doing some music videos myself. By the way, great SSF2 video, tailz. :)

If there was a way to disable certain sound channels in SNES9x, maybe this concept could be done while keeping the sound effects of the original game. I think that would be cool.

That could take too long. You'd have to record the exact times and channels of hundreds of sounds during a run.

I think a music video of many small clips from different games would be pretty cool, if done right. I would definately love to try it, if anyone knew where I could get video editing software for free.

I'm glad to see lots of people like this idea and thanks for the compliments on the Street Fighter video. To answer the question that's on everyone's mind: HowtoMakeAVI. I used the programs listed in the avi faq. I did do a couple of things differently though. I didn't do anything special with the avi dump. I just used the XviD codec and dumped it from SNES9X (any codec will work for this part). Second, I didn't record the wav sound from the original avi dump. I already had the sound (the song) so that step was skipped. I also didn't need to encode it with LAME because it was already an mp3. If your song isn't in mp3 format you can try to encode it with LAME or find a converter that will do it. With the song set the next thing to do was the toughest part: editing the video. This was done with VirtualDub. You can get it from the link on the FAQ (gotta love that thing hehe ;)) Actually, editing wasn't really tough, more like time-consuming. Since I didn't fast-forward or anything when dumping the avi, I went frame by frame and chose which ones I wanted in the video. That wasn't too hard either. By pressing Delete you can delete a frame from the video so it was just a matter of pressing delete to skip the parts that weren't needed. I found it was better to do the video first and then mess with the song because I knew how long I needed the song to be with the video done. Once the video was edited, it was time to encode it. Like the FAQ says, I set the Color Depth to 16 Bit RGB {555} and chose Audio > No Audio (because I already had the song). I then chose XviD MPEG 4 codec from the Compression menu and clicked configure. This is where it gets different. Profile @ Level was set to Unrestricted (that's the same) but instead of choosing Two Pass: First Pass, I chose Single Pass. After choosing Single Pass I clicked the calc... button to the right of it and set specs. This is where you set the size and everything. You chose the target size for the video (in kbytes), the target size for the subtitles (if any, but in this case there shouldn't be so just leave it at 0), the format for the video (AVI, OGM, MKV, etc...) and the length of the video. You also choose the format for the audio file here. The format is MP3-VBR (as the FAQ states) and Size(kbytes) should be checked. Then click the ... button next to it and select the song you are using. This doesn't add the song to the file but gets the file ready for it (I think). With your specs chosen click OK and go back to the XviD configuration tab. You'll see the target Quantization slider bar. The lower the number you set the bar at the better the quality but larger the filesize. The bigger the number, the smaller the filesize but lower quality. I set the bar at 4 ( 4.01 to be exact) and got great quality (as you saw). That's all I did different from the FAQ. The rest is exactly the same (save for the second pass and stuff because I did a single pass). When you choose your filesize you can manualy enter a number by typing in the Target Size text bar thing. Just make sure you choose something reasonable. You don't have to use the same settings I did, I only got these because I fiddled with it a bunch of times. Just make sure you don't close the VirtualDub program or you'll have to edit your video all over again. adelikat: If you want I can make the video for you. Just tell me how you want it done/what scenes you want in it.

Nice work, Vatchern. A good run and a good song mixed together is never wrong ;). Keep these musicvideos coming, I think they're great to watch. :)

Nice movie Vatchern, it was really nice. Keep it up! Also, I'm currently in the process of putting together another video. This one is going to be shorter, sub 4 mins to be exact. It should be done soon so be prepared.

Not really sure, I would start by taking all the in between scenes out (and the jogging routines) and see how much more is left. The song itself is only about 4 min, maybe just include like the last 3-4 boxers, with all the in between stuff cut?

I made a Rockman 2 music video today. Get it here: http://www.savefile.com/files.php?fid=7240061 I made it with Windows moviemaker, the song in the video is MetalMan StainlessSteel from Overclocked Remix. And the video is from Morimotos and Finalfighters run. Don't be too hard on me, I've never made a musicvideo before... I didn't spend a lot of time on that one. Well, maybe some of you will like it. EDIT: After comparing video quality to the run itself, I now realize that I lost a lot of vide quality in the encoding... Sorry about that, but I'm just really really bad at how moviemaker works. You'll have to manage the crappy video quality. On the upside, filesize is low.

Thanks Vatchern. :) I know it's short, but I thought that the only video that suited metalman music was metalman stage! ;) Anyway, perhaps I'll get a new version of it up soon, with better quality. I'm gonna try to find out how stuff works with moviemaker too... Making videos is actually quite fun. EDIT: Okay, I have it in better quality now, but filesize is high... around 16mb i think. This was the best I could do... Anyone knows how/if you can change the codec for your movie with Windows Moviemaker? Anyway, here's the new link: http://www.savefile.com/files.php?fid=8725784

The movie looks good Randil, nice job! I've never really used Moviemaker so I don't know how to change the codec. I do look forward to seeing more of your videos. Keep it up!
