Yet another warp run for SMB2u. The strategy for the entire run is pretty much the same as Phil. I took different paths just so everyone could actually see that I was doing something different. This movie was VERY hard to make. Phil did an excellent job manipulating the game to do what he wanted. I went through and found frames I didn't think where there. I spent a very long time on this run. I hope that if I am beaten, that it's not by the number of frames I was able to find, hehe. Anyway, here's the rundown:
1-1: -0[0.000s] - unless someone can beat it faster then 2 or 3 frames, birdo will shoot the egg at teh same time within a few frames.
1-2: -6[0.100s] - I found some very mysterious frames, 4 came from teh carpet ride. I tried for a VERY long time to get this one...the other two were mysteriously from birdo.
1-3: -0[0.000s] - Nothing new here.
4-1: -0[0.000s] - Nothing new here.
4-2: -0[0.000s] - Nothing new here.
6-1: -5[0.083s] - Most of these frames were from the sand digging area. How I managed to squeeze out these guys...I thought that sand area was perfect when I first started.
6-2: -0[0.000s] - Nothing new here.
6-3: -0[0.000s] - Nothing new here.
7-1: -5[0.083s] - I saved a few frames on the ladder glitching part.
7-2: -3[0.050s] - I managed to gain one pixel, and when going for the birdo with the key, I manage to start my forward momentum 2 frames faster. I also saved two frames on the last bird head thing, but when I finished wart I was knocked down a frame.
All in all I saved 19 frames, or 0.317s. This time save was also just enough to make the submission time round down instead of rounding up like Phils'. (previous run is 07:54 and the new one is 07:53)

Ow. This is even worse than what Phil did to Sleepz. Unfortunately, a precedent has been set. Yes.

Well there's not much that can be done. I'm sure Phil will spend the next month trying to beat this run. If he does, I hope it's not by 19 frames...heh.

I hope Phil's next run uses some new bugs.

Interesting to note, this has to be the ultimate TAS game. So many many bugs, each which can give a small time saver. Multiple characters for more strategy, Different routes... I don't think we have another game on the site where people are constantly thinking what's there is practically perfect, and then someone finds something new.

Well, I don't claim to be a pro. I expect that in time this will be beaten. All I have to say is that if I can beat it, it's still not perfect. :P

Since nowadays (or always have been) we care if a movie is 19, 33 or 5 frames faster than a current published run, Im voting Yes. Great job Donamer! You've beaten TAS King Phil :) Will Phil strike back?

As AngerFist said: Even a slight improvement, like your 19 frames, matters enough (atleast for me). Of course there is also that entertainment factor which I think you did just fine. So my vote is also yes. EDIT: fixed the text a little. (It was was just the opposite to what I originally meant ;D)
Which run should I encode next? :)

wow...I see hardly any difference from Phils.. [edit with reason]The reason i voted no was because the question is "Did you enjoy watching the movie?" I did not enjoy watching the movie because I already enjoyed it when i watched Phils and Sleepz. I never voted on Phils(I dont think) because it was almost a second improvement. But this one is not. I was not entertained due to i have seen this before.

Indeed. I intend to hold this submission until some previous author, such as Phil or Sleepz, at least attempts to beat this record (*). I don't like allowing people to take honor from others with mere few-frames improvements on a movie that has so much effort invested in like SMB2u. *) But not indefinitely.

Think about the new ones here, who haven't seen SMB2u TAS yet. Should they see this or Phil's version? I don't know what to vote for this one. Sure it is faster, but I'm not sure where. I think that Phil's movie was somewhat more entertaining.

the only entertaing difference i noticed was that phil wriggled (lack of a better word) alot more back and forth in his movie by comparison. I think the movies are just as entertaining and I urge people to vote yes to this submission cause it is a improvement even if it is "only" 19 frames.

It seems to me that the fact that there's been so much effort invested in this game already is a *reason* why improvements these days are only on the order of a few frames. And I also don't agree with the notion that *who* submitted a movie should be taken into consideration when determining whether to publish a movie or not - judge the movie on its own merit, not on who did it. That being said, there's nothing wrong IMO with holding it for a while to allow further improvements, but the same thing should also be done if Phil or Sleepz submit a new version, then. :)

It's easy for me to say, not having a published movie to be obsoleted, but I always think that we should not worry about "honor" or the author of the current published run and vote on each movie on its own merit. It's an SMB2 run in 7:53, which meets the criteria of breaking the established record. Was it good? I think it was. Any obvious errors? Not that I can think of. This isn't a tough decision for me. I vote Yes. Stylistically, I did notice that when Toad throws the Flurry before getting the spaceship in 6-1, the Flurry remains on the ledge instead of falling into the water as in previous runs. Maybe it takes more skill to keep him up there? I don't know. I kind of liked watching the little guy commit hari kiri. Not much else to say. Well done, DonamerDragon.

I just don't like to welcome the atmosphere where your hard work of making a entertaining 10-minute movie will be forgotten because someone else made a movie that's 0.3 seconds faster than yours. It depresses authors easily, especially for newbie authors, who are not confident about "frames" and perfect timing. Knowing that someone can easily beat your work by just making it a frame or two faster (which is always a possibility as long as there are uncertainty sources, such as the precise speed the characters walk and jump), why make a movie at all? This is certainly not a new topic, and my take on these situations is to intentionally delay the offending submission to give the previous author a chance to recover. This is especially amplified in long movies; less so in short movies like Monopoly.

I'm all in favor of competition. Just as long as we're not delaying too long. The new author deserves recognition, too.

I dont understand. Why didnt you say this when Phil improved Sleepz run by merely 30-35 frames? Could you see the difference between those runs? I doubt that. Phil did not show anything new, he improved a few jumps, thats all. People voting no is a total shock too me. I mean, how dare we say we can accept and publish a run who improves it by 1 frame, 5 frames, 20 frames etc when some of us feel a bit reluctant to accept Donamers run? Because he is a newbie? I gotta say, thats a very bad excuse...

I agree wholeheartedly with this. Favortism is not needed here - I think it will make more people discouraged than obsoletion.

This is part of TASing. Everyond should expect all their runs to be obsoleted someday.

Because there are more reasons to make these runs besides getting them published on this site.

Actually, I am against these kind of improvements. Sure it is faster, but I don't believe anyone who says this run is significantly more entertaining. I think donamer should have spend the time making this movie with making a movie of another game... However since Phil's movie was exepted, and this improvement is simular, I do agree that this movie should be published. (but I would generally disagree to this!)

your hard work is likely to not be forgotten. I think everyone remembers what sleepz contributed (not to mention it being in the movie description)
It depresses authors easily, especially for newbie authors, who are not confident about "frames" and perfect timing. While that might make a good argument to delay publication, but I just want to point out that the obsoleted author in this case is not complaining or expressing any hurt feelings. (people seem to be assuming this due to past experiences).
why make a movie at all?
Because making a good TAS is a fun and rewarding experience regardless of whether it is published (or stays published) on this site. Also, records are meant to be broken, and former record holder still gets his "15 minutes of fame". Surely someone can't expect to make a run and it stay forever. The fact that is by a small margin is merely a consequence of high competition and the eventually perfecting of the game.

Actually he did say he would wait to publish Phil's run, Bisqwit has been consistent in his opinion.

Shouldn't Phil/Sleepz be more newbie than the so-called newbie since their time was beaten? Hooray elitism. All that offending talk aside and casting away titles, I would actually not be against contacting the obsoleted author to see if they're really motivated to start an improvement that they know they can improve, and start as such immediately. However, I can see even then, more often than not, those obsoleted authors just saying, "Yeah, whatever. I don't care that much as to cause a scene. I admit defeat on such a small subject in life as video game time attacks. Publish theirs." Unless of course...they don't regard video game time attacks as being in small light. The question is...what are their feelings!? Yay weird post from random guy no one knows.

Im not sure what you are trying to prove other than to show the differences. But there are no differences, just as there was no difference between Phil and Sleepz movie. Phil's run was accepted which should be without a doubt be in this case too. This site clearly showed which side its on when it accepted Phils run.
