Some of you may have noticed the main site has got Google Advertisements to the left column. Several people have recommended me to try it, as a source of extra revenue, and encouraged by that positive feedback I tried it. However, I don't like advertisements myself. That's why I have tried to refrain of making the site a marketplace. I use the AdBlock extension in Firefox, which blocks me all advertisements that I don't like. So far, it does not block Google Ads (by my own choice; they are rarely intrusive enough to annoy me that much). At the Nesvideos site I also tried to make the adbar unintrusive. So, I'm asking for your opinions... what do you think of it? [Edit: Poll removed, because it's pointless now.] [Edit: Changed for a more general subject]

Doesn't bother me a bit. If it helps you in any way, good.

I think it's fair. You've put so much effort into maintaining the site, i don't think it's wrong to get some money to help keeping it that way, or improving it. Also, google ads are really discrete.

I seriously think you should fill the whole site with huge flashing gif banners and even huger flash ads as well as unrequested popups which refuse to close and which obstruct your view until you click on them... Just kidding, of course. The ads seem ok because they don't bother.

As long there are no PopUps its ok for me. I vote meh (I don't care whether there are advertisements or not), because normaly I don't like ads. But these are no big problem and they don't disturb the main site. Speed Demos Archive has them too. And these are no big problem too.

Err... What are you talking about? AdBlock can remove those ads mate! Just add http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/* in AdBlock and you're set. However... I voted that I use an adblocker, but I don't mind that you have ads on your site, as long as they don't get in the way. "Google Ads - Yay or Nay?" "Which one means yes?"-man in tights. YAY!

Sure it can. I didn't say AdBlock can't remove them. I said AdBlock removes the ads that I don't like.

They dont bother at all. If it means cash for you, then everyone should accept them.

I'm pro keeping the site funded. However questions will arise about this if Bisqwit turns a profit. I know from experience on other sites, if you have several thousand people coming by a day, you tend to make ~$4000 a year. Based on recent statistics, there are 90311.35714285714286 hits a day. I'm worried that may turn off people since the Mega Man 2 video for example says not for sites that make money off of ads.

I didn't even notice those ads until now. Google ads are really nice, actually. Of course keep them if they help. It's your site anyway, you could put giant flashing popups with sound if you wanted to. :D

Ads are fine with me if they aren't processor intensive (Flash ap that says "HIT THREE GOATS TO WIN SEVENTY FREE IPODS") or pop-ups / pop-unders.

I'm a bit worried about google tracking where I browse. They could store a complete history of every site with google-ads I visited, and google is known to store excessive data. Although that may seem paranoid, that's the main reason I generally block their ads. recent adblock versions have a whitelist though, and you just got whitelisted. my google surf profile will from now on be "google, sda and bisqwits" ;) Those ads are fine with me as long as they pay for hardware costs etc. If you're making excessive profit off them, it'd be fair to give the movie makers their share or pay back donations. But we can talk about that if that ever happens, you don't seem like someone to just hoard the money without telling anyone. voting "I support the decision". btw, phpbb-hacks ftw!
When you vote, please also post a message that explains your opinion. This helps the author of the movie and the judges who decide whether to publish it.

Thanks for the confidence. Despite what Nach says, I'm somewhat sceptical whether Adsense will actually yield any mentionable profit. But whatever it does (minus the bank fees claiming the checks), I'll update it on the donate.cgi page. So far, the main target is the funds for the server purchased in February 2006. What happens after that, I haven't decided yet.

Oops. Yeah, that particular hack works perfectly in 99% of cases, but not in this thread :P

Voting YES - Support (discrete) Google Ads. If I understood correctly, they are only appearing on the homepage http://tasvideos.org/ , which is not bothersome. Besides, Bisqwit's storys about his broken cable (or was it DSL) modems made me feel bad for him, so hardware contributing funds seem just fair. And if you should happen to make giant profits of this (which I seriously doubt), you might as well have NESVIDEOS-T-Shirts produced for all the players (read: contributers) with that money. Uh.. time for me to finally contribute, too! :P

The poll has this bit of text "When you vote, please also post a message that explains your opinion. This helps the author of the movie and the judges who decide whether to publish it." Cracks me up.

I didn't know. But, now that I do, I think I might take a few minutes and try to earn the site half a penny.

I have nothing against it either, but I thought the Mega Man 2 thing too. While I guess this kind of thing isn't what FinalFighter was targeting with that, this site could now potentially make money.

I'll ask for Finalfighter's opinion. For the mean time, I've disabled the ads on pages that list his movie entry. (NewMovies.html excluded.)

Google ads are targeted and not very intrusive, so I say go for them if they're added to make the site break even.

Well, for starters, I'm glad that they're Google ads rather than DOWNLOAD THE NEXT-GEN SMILIES HERE Flash banners. Google ads are easy to integrate into the site without making it too obtrusive. It's mostly the lack of consistency that ads bring that bother me. Vitaly Friedman said some good things about ads on his blog entry called "20 Rules Of Smart And Successful Web-development": "Disturbing ad blocks might improve your ad revenue for a while, but in a long run they won’t make your web-site successful. In fact, you won’t gain respect and explore the potential you and your projects might have. However, ads perfectly combined with the main content and placed well in the structure of the site (i.e. devblog.de) don’t disturb. Furthermore, thus both reputation points and ad revenue points are guaranteed." The example he cites, http://www.devblog.de/, indeed has brilliantly integrating Google ads. I think that your use of Google ads can still be customized a little bit more to fit in even better. Once it's settled, I personally won't have a problem with it. Sure, I'd rather not have advertisements, and it kind of does violate the whole "do not post these movies on commercial sites" thing, but the Web isn't for free and if this is what it's going to be, then so be it. :)

I don't really care one way or another, as long as Google Ads are the only ones being displayed.
