On this site, we make perfect movies, and then we beat them. Of course, if we can beat them, they weren’t perfect in the first place, but who would have known?
This submission beats the published Rockman movie by about 48 seconds (2887 frames). It breaks down to these improvements:
  • Elecman: 88 frames
    • New glitch-techniques (~20 frames)
    • New playing-techniques (~58 frames)
    • Better precision (~10 frames)
  • Iceman: 64 frames
    • Water scene (better precision): ~35 frames
    • Lift scene (better precision): ~20 frames
    • Tunnel (better precision): ~10 frames
  • Fireman: 697 frames
    • Better precision
    • New glitch-techniques (MAJOR)
  • Bombman: 884 frames
    • New glitch-techniques (MAJOR)
    • Better precision
    • Less refills
  • Gutsman: 42 frames
    • New playing-techniques (beginning, refill approach)
    • Better precision
  • Cutman: 454 frames
    • New glitch-techniques (MAJOR)
  • Wily1: 82 frames
    • New playing-techniques (~20 frames gained at refill, ~30 frames gained at the Boss)
    • Better precision
  • Wily2: 184 frames
    • New glitch-techniques (~60 frames)
    • Better precision (~40 frames)
    • New refill strategy (~60 frames)
  • Wily3: 84 frames
    • New glitch-technique
  • Wily4: about 280 frames
    • New playing-techniques (most notably, the Wily fight is very different)
Most of the new strategies come from finalfighter. Some came from Morimoto. Huge thanks to both of them. A few were discovered by AngerFist and Bisqwit during the making of the movie.
The precision of the making of this movie was greatly improved from the past. What most influenced that outcome, was an emulator feature, an FCEU extension, that shows the following things each frame:
  • Position and speed of Rockman (X, Y) at subpixel precision
    • This allowed to make optimizations that weren't immediately visible, but only affected in the long run
    • It also helped solve many mysteries of the game that were previously without answers
  • Positions and ages of each Magnet Beam
    • Combined with the data collected at Rockman Data, this allowed to predict exactly where and when to place each beam
  • Indicator of boss and enemy hits
    • This saved a lot of trial&error work.
Other software that were written for the tasks specialized for this game:
  • BisqBot, a rerecording robot, was used to manipulate the weapon refills and to fight the Wily3 boss.
  • A C++ program was made to predict the randomness needed to make Bombman act in a certain way at Wily4.
A lot of wall-passing / wrapping / zipping techniques are used in this movie. And this “a lot” means... adjectives are not enough to describe it. It has became increasingly difficult for even an expert player to comprehend what is going on in this movie. In a few situations, what appears on the screen is not what happens in the game. For example, Rockman may appear to pass through a spike unharmed or jump from air. In such situations, he’s usually temporarily inhabiting the “next screen” that is different from the one being displayed. Except, when he really actually hits a spike and still survives (this happens in Bombman stage).
The foundation of all of the techniques used in this movie are explained at Rockman Tricks, but the applications are myriad and complicated. There currently exists no documentary of those applications, but if you keep asking, something like that may be built in the progress of answering your questions.

EDIT: This submission was originally submitted as a Rockman movie, but as I tried out how it works in USA Mega Man, and noticed it desyncs in the last battle, I tried to make a compatible USA version movie on the side of the Japanese version. However, the USA version movie ended up being faster (due to no particular reason), so I’m actually replacing the old submission with this new one.
If played on Japanese version, it desyncs in the second part of the last fight. Use the USA version.

Okay, that game contains one major bug. The movie is without a doubt well played and I think it should be published. But what I don't understand, why people love it so much? Personally, I didn't see many differences between the last version and this one. Bah I guess I am not really a fan of that game :P Edit: I do forget to mention that I do love when enemies were turned into characters. lol

I think I agree with you here Phil. :) Sprite collision abusing was the main thing I've noticed watching this video. Of course, there were many small exploits but I don't know their influence on the gameplay, so I digress.

I actually don't watch movies of games I havn't played, and I guess there's a couple of things in this movie I can't replicate myself, but I pretty much do understand how it works, and that makes it a great TAS for me. And, this is the first Mega Man 1 TAS I've seen, since I don't have the japanese version of the game. To me, it was a really good TAS, but for someone who doesn't understand the game it might not be, but most people knows about most things, or can at least figure out part of what's happening, and I believe that's enough to make it a fun watch. I don't know where I want to get with this post, but I'll submit it anyway.

I see. *4matsy's brain is unable to comprehend the sheer level of ZOMG T3H AWESOME that this movie exhibits, and as such a loud POP! is heard as said brain--along with the rest of his head-- explodes spectacularly.* I'm not even going to bother voting yes, as this video very obviously wins the internet. A shame that it desyncs on the original version just seconds from the game's end, but luckily it's not too hard to simply take over and finish Wily off manually at that point... :p I'm also looking forward to that hack of yours as well, Bisqwit...I wonder what it would look like TAS'd, heh :)

That is just so totally awesome, haha. That game is so manipulated I don't even think a gameshark user could do the same thing. It's nice when the yes decision is so easy. ;)

Regarding entertainment, each person is different. I for one have an appreciation for behind the scenes. However if you look closely you can see more than just glitches being exploited. I watched the video in slow motion, and in several places I saw Mega Man moving at a subtly faster rate then he should be. I think I noticed this most by a jump in Elec Man's level, and another jump in Guts Man's level. I found it quite entertaining to see Mega Man doing something which shouldn't be possible, not just walking through a wall, but Matrix style moving faster than bullets. Unforunetly, it seems others don't notice it, Bisqwit himself told me he didn't notice the faster movment, he only knows it was faster movement because of the tools he made :( I found the impossibility entertaining but I guess it's not that noticable to most. For those that do notice the faster movement, isn't it entertaining? It's the idea behind it, just like Neo dodging bullets, no one cares that he's moving or wiggling, but that he's doing it faster than he should. Realizing that this is only possible because of special effects - tools; is the icing on the cake. This is one of the few videos I've seen where seemingly regular walking shocked me, and by extension entertained me.

I suppose the only thing left to acchive in this game is to successfully play it through with all the known glitches, but with even better luck-manipulation to allow you not to loose forward momentum even one single frame more than you need to! :) Not that it would mean alot because we're just talking a couple of frames. But still. :D I don't think the team is done with this game anyways. They will crunch it and manipulate every pixel there is to see if they can make any diffrence. :D Now I'm really looking forward to the Mega Man 2 TAS. :)

To my knowledge, this only occured in Wily 2 when Bisqbot turned left 1-2 frames to get refills and in Wily 1 when it climbed on the ladder. Besides, improving those spots seems at this point impossible due to the obvious fact that Bisqbot tries several hundred thousand times to get the best and fastest luck manipulation. Then there was the section in Cutman where I got those two refills without any single frame of delay (pushed forward all the time) so I dont think none of those areas could be improved.

Btw, a classification idea came to my mind while reading this thread: First-generation tool-assisted speedruns: This is where all began. The genre was new and mysterious, and everything tool-assisted looked superb. Almost everything made "as fast as possible" using emulator tools was classified as a good TAS. Typically optimizations didn't go to frame-level, it was just enough to perform "superhuman" feats and complete the game faster than any human playing in the regular way could. Second-generation tool-assisted speedruns: Several emulators were being enhanced with tool-assisted speedrunning in mind, bringing more stability to rerecording as well as powerful tools such as frame advance and frame counter. This allowed for much more precise optimization to squeeze ever last frame out of a TAS. Also more attention was paid to look for glitches and other similar things in games which could be abused. Third-generation tool-assisted speedruns: The games themselves are disassembled and studied, tools are coded to optimize the TAS (such as robots) and emulators are patched on a per-game basis in order to make the optimization of the TAS of a certain game easier.

But I was frame-perfecting back in 2004! It's just that I didn't find all the best puzzle solutions for Eggerland the first time through.

ditto It seems that the first-generations TAS are few and quickly fading away. 2nd generation is the most common, and now we are slowly seeing the 3rd generation increase in number. This is a TOOL-ASSISTED site. It only makes sense that we develop better tools in addition to run-making skills. I think this run embodies this site because of all the TOOLS used in order to create it. (basically Nach's earlier point that nobody seems to be picking up on)

Wow, looks great and glitchy the game. Never saw so many glitches in a game. Sure I saw some from the Mega Man games in the past, but so many wall glitches in one game. Wow again. For sure a yes vote! But some questions at all. I saw ony missing shot in the Cutman Stage. Was this for luck manipulation or just a missing shot? And in one from the Willy Stages its looks like that you wait a bit and lose some Frames. Was this for luck manipulation or lag avoiding? Or for something else. Or was it lag, that it only looks like waiting? Does the Pause trick not work by all Bosses or with all weapons?
