Allrighty, Kid Icarus time.
Kid Icarus is a pretty good platformer. Not too hard, not too easy but just nice. And pretty complex, too.
There is already a published version of this on the site, so I'll just tell you what I did differently than Sleepz:
  • When I get the strength powerups, I don't enter any enemy chambers like Sleepz does. Instead, I collect the needed skill from enemies that are along the way. This saved a lot of time.
  • I use a different route in 1-4 than Sleepz. I found a nice shortcut which enabled me to save something like 40 seconds.
  • I did not buy a feather. Sleepz used a feather in 3-2. My way is about 2 seconds faster.
Another thing to note:
I had to manipulate luck a little in the beginning of 3-3. It did not look very nice, but this is the fastest I could make it. It's not really any slower than Sleepz, maybe a few frames.
Overall Sleepz was very precise in his movie and most of my movie is almost identical to Sleepz's.
I suggest that if my movie is published, it replaces BOTH of the currently published movies. Bob Whoops's 100% version should be removed from the site because it does not meet its goals i.e. it's not really a 100% run and it does not get the best ending. The quality of playing is also pretty poor from today's perspective. If the movie was submitted today, it would be rejected immediately. I am not planning on making a 100% run.
This movie was made using fceu-0.98.13-rerecording and it:
  • aims for fastest time
  • takes damage to save time
  • uses no passwords
  • abuses a programming error (goes inside a wall)
I'd like to thank the guys at #nesvideos for supporting me. A big thanks to Sleepz, the author of the previous run and also to tmont, the author of the Kid Icarus speed run (available at SDA). He helped me with his speedrun and also by contacting me and making me aware of a few things.
Please ask if you have any questions.
EDIT: Oh and Sleepz's run is 25:10 long, so my movie is 1:14 faster.

Bisqwit: Does what it promises, beats an existing movie, and introduces new techniques. Accepting.

adelikat: This run was made on a bad dump:
Kid Icarus (UE) [b1].nes,
SHA1: 11713A9514934B60724960DB9FD1F367ABCC8D07
MD5: D464E3E3877A759B8053210BAAEBC890
But this run syncs on the good dump, so I cataloged it as the good dump instead.

Here's my slightly detailed comments: 1-1 You could probably use the wall-jump glitch around frame 3000, so you don't have to screen wrap. Do you really need to take damage around frame 3300? 1-2 5600- you can make that jump to the right, so you don't need to screen wrap (probably faster, I did it in my run). 6200- nice use of poor physics. :) 1-3 15000- how does the collision detection work with those spiny-plant things? I've always been curious. 15700- Could you have killed some of the reapettes to eliminate lag? 1-4 Were the rescued soldiers actually helping in the fight against Twinbellows? I couldn't tell. Is it really necessary to get hit by his projectile? (his fireball-thing is more damaging than his body) 2-1 How come you don't get the earlier weapon upgrade? Lack of 'skill'? Or is it slower? Not that it really matters, since you don't waste time killing stuff, but I'm just curious. 2-2 The rokmen massacre was nice. :) 2-3 Very nice. Nothing to say. I think it's possible to get hit a little less, but no matter. 2-4 Very nice. Again, it looks you get a hit a lot, and some of them might be avoidable. 3-1 Well done. I think the moving platform is more manipulatable, so you don't have to wait on the cloud with the reaper. 3-2 On the first moving platform, it looks like you waited so you didn't have to get hit. If you hadn't waited, could you have made the jump immediately to the next higher platform? 3-3 Nothing. 3-4 This level suffered a little from you being careful due to you trying to avoid taking damage. Pandora was beautiful. Good movement manipulation. 4-1 4-for-1 shots rule. Good work! This was a fun watch. I know very well how incredibly tedious this game is to play for speed. It seems like you got hit a lot in the early levels for insignificant gain, which hurt you in the later levels, but you knew that. That's really the only negative thing I see about this. Everything else was well played.

I'll answer the things I can right now, and when I get home I'll answer the rest.

No, the soldiers didn't hit once, but they didn't cost me any extra time either. I got hit by the projectile so one of the soldiers wouldn't. There's no reason for that, I just like the soldiers :)
tmont wrote:

Yes, I didn't have enough skill at that point. Not nearly enough.
tmont wrote:

Thanks. It was crap to do because I needed to turn around fast so many times. Turning around in this game is extremely slow.
tmont wrote:

I tried to do this but couldn't. I didn't try it for hours upon hours though, so I might be wrong.
tmont wrote:

No. This is the point I had the most trouble with in the run. I didn't have enough health at that point to test if it was faster to jump straight away (there is a spiked plant in the way). When I finally did get around to testing it, I wasn't able to jump to the next platform.
tmont wrote:

You may be right about the damage thing, I didn't really pay that much attention to it in world 1 or 2 because I didn't know that health was so hard to recover. Nevertheless, I still don't think I could've made this movie much faster by taking damage in different spots. Thanks for the comments tmont (and everyone else).

Great run. I particularly enjoyed the vertical scrolling levels, as the screen could barely keep up with Pit.

I haven't seen this yet, but I will! I'd like to see someone attempt a proper 100% run on this too, though. It'd take some planning but it's really quite do-able. The requirements: -Score exactly 200000 points before the final stage -Get the strength upgrades in 1-2, 2-1, 2-2, and 3-1 -Defeat 3 of the Training Rooms (out of 4 total) -Have 999 hearts by the end of the game I actually made a not-great-but-decent 100% run myself some time ago, with a final score of 202400 or something like that. But it was a VirtuaNES video. =( That emulator never really took off, did it?

Okay, here are answers to the questions with specific framecounts:
tmont wrote:

If you mean jumping through the hole that's only one block high, that's impossible. When jumping, Pit is always two blocks high, even when ducking. Pit's height doesn't change while jumping even if you duck.
tmont wrote:

Now that I watch it in slow motion, it does look like it could've been avoided. I'm not sure though, it might be that if you jump from any farther away, Pit won't make the jump to the higher ledge.
tmont wrote:
5600- you can make that jump to the right, so you don't need to screen wrap (probably faster, I did it in my run).
I did this intentionally. It allowed me to get in a better position to kill those red flying thingies. If I had done it the way you suggest, the monsters would have been able to fly out of reach and I would've had to drag them along for a while without any good spots to kill them. This would've delayed the appearance of the next group of monsters, which I needed to kill to get enough skill.
tmont wrote:

I found that the spiny thingies attached to walls rarely hit. I think the little circle in the middle of the plant is the part that's most likely to damage you.
tmont wrote:

Maybe, but thinking about it now it probably would've been weighed out by the point tallying in the end. The point tallying takes a really long time. I'm not sure if the reapettes give points though.. There, I hope my answers are satisfactory. If there's anything else, ask away.

I never played this game as a kid. It's good to know I didn't miss much. Not to take away from Kyrsimys's play, as it was very precise, but whoever designed World 1 and thought it would be fun to play should be forced to play it until they cry and realize their mistake.

Ah. I thought Sleepz did it, so I figured you knew about it.

It seems to be really fickle. Kind of like how the lava sometimes does damage, and sometimes does not. Also, the green stuff in 2-3 and the little red bushes in stage/world 3 are also fickle. Probably any part of the terrain that can harm you is the same way.

They give you 100 points. The lag in this game is rare, but absolutely hideous when it happens.

No more questions, your honor. Thanks for indulging! By the way, your name is really hard to spell (for Americans, anyway); too many interchangeable i's and y's. I had to look it up everytime I wrote it. :)

As you might guess, in Finnish, "i" and "y" are two distinct vowels, and not quite interchangeable :) The sound of the Finnish y resembles German ü. Think "ü" when you read "y" in a Finnish word/name.

As if most Americans know how to pronounce a German "ü". Hell, most of us can't even pronounce Spanish properly, and all of Spanish's vowels are in English as well ;->.

Hehe, the issue of my name has been brought up more than once. No one seems to get it right (apart from Finnish people) even if they DO look it up. But anyway, thanks for your comments everyone, and thanks for fast publishing.

Fantastic run, I enjoyed watching it very much. Amazingly fast time for such a hard game! Stage 2's music makes it even that much more awesome too.

If you manage to earn more hearts along the way (which does not slow down time) you can buy another life cup in the dungeon. Then you can afford to take the damage from the sikerooms in the 3 dungeon without having to wait.

This isn't entirely correct. You're right in that I would only need a couple more hearts to afford a cup (I have 189 in 3-4 and the cup costs 210), but what's wrong with this is that the only store I visit in 3-4 is located just before the boss, where I don't need health anymore. I go through all the spikerooms where I have to wait before I get to the store.

But is it not possible to buy one in the second dungeon along the way? U only have a minimum of life during the whole third level. Very good run though, I love this game. Thank you

I already buy one in the second dungeon. There is no way I could collect enough hearts without slowing down to afford a second one at that point of the game.

It seems to me that the solution to this:
tmont wrote:
3-4 This level suffered a little from you being careful due to you trying to avoid taking damage.
Counld be helped in part by this:
Krysimys wrote:
I got hit by the projectile so one of the soldiers wouldn't. There's no reason for that, I just like the soldiers :)
It would only afford a little extra damage, but along with taking the cup in 1-2 (if possible), that could afford you a couple of extra hits in 3-4. In any case, I was entertained :)
