No rings is impossible for sonic. However, it is possible for the Knuckles in Sonic 1 hack that JXQ TASed. Pacifist would be rather boring, as the badniks don't make much of a difference except to bounce on for super long jumps. Minimal rings might be worth exploring, as it could force radical route changes in some levels, but it's an open question whether the result would be at all fun to watch.

Can't walk because there is no "walk" button. only "run". So I guess thats out the window. Can't MAKE a walk number because that would cause too many complaints on what that arbitrary number is. Shouldn't make a walking TAS because its very boring. Sonic TASes= Speed. No rings is impossible on some levels and provides no real reward or entertainment. All rings is only valid on Sonic 2, and noone has shown interest. Pacifist solely for the sake of it sounds very boring. Any other ideas anyone wants to have crushed into a fine powder? (In other words, anyone else got an idea that they really think is genuinely good and might impress us?)

Sonic 1&2/3 are quite different. I guess this could have its pros and its cons. I remember someone was doing a Sonic 1+2+3+3&K run a while back but they only released a single demo video and no input file, so I'm guessing it broke them down into a twitching wreck. While it would probably be impressive, the whole quad run thing is somewhat overdone (I know, theres only 1 but thats enough for me). Still, knowing me if it was made and well done, I would likely vote yes..

I wouldn't mind seeing a glitchless S3K run. Nitsuja's run is awe-inspiring, but it doesn't always show much of the actual levels, which is a shame.

You're welcome. Edit: Ah, beaten to the punch.

There are 'all Chaos Emeralds' and/or 'all ring' runs for most of the Sonic runs. Sonic 2 comes to mind for the game taking note (though by one of those long bonus tallies end of level) for all rings, and also for having Super Sonic, and two character playable special stages for all Chaos Emeralds. Sonic3 also for Super/Hyper, and the full level runs that were mentioned. Actually whilst I am thinking about it Sonic Advanced 2 all Special rings run would be awesome. (That one (Non-TAS) level Nintendan of TSC fame shows that.) Bit off topic though being a Genesis board, still...

Ahh, fair enough. Sadly, Gens doesn't appear to exist for Mac, so I can't use the .gmv file (and the AVI is no longer available). Oh, well. Someone mentioned a while back the possibility of a run of S3K with Super/Hyper Sonic already unlocked. Obviously this would have to start from a saved game.

an input file was released, and there's a video file showing all 4 plays with various audio options... (http://tas.monotoli.org/mov/Sonic_1_2_3_K-wip01.mkv). But that thread has gotten no attention since shortly after. A shame, he was doing a decent job, and I'd definitely find it more fun to watch than the megaman one.

I lost interest in that after watching the Megaman 4-games run. But it still looks cool.

That was me. I had already tried some routes for the next section and all I found out was that it's not very desirable to get those bubble shields. Part of the reason why I quit was that it was eating way too much time. Also, I lost my modified version of Gens as well as the source code that enabled me to run those 4 games simultaneously, due to a harddrive crash. I still think it would be cool if somebody took the effort of finishing the run. For the audio, I guess it would seem much more impressive if it was SFX only of all games played at once. This could be done by subtracting the raw BGM tracks from the games' audio tracks. Of course this means nothing if nobody wants to continue it, and I simply don't have enough spare time atm.

Maybe No rings could be a reality or not: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/get/296924297/Sonic1ghz1noring.gmv

Well, when you get to MZ2, it's impossible to avoid collecting 6 rings. Additionally, LZ2 cannot be completed without collecting a 10 ring monitor. Also, SLZ3 and both SBZ1 and SBZ2 look rather iffy. There may be more, but the guy wit the complete list isn't on right now for me to ask.

Whilst the 'alternate Sonic run topic' has been bumped, mike89 has submitted ring attack videos for all levels in Sonic1 to TSC, (bar Spring Yard 2, which he submitted a Score attack video which I presume, does the job) which will show routes for (again, I guess...) all the rings in the game. Could be used as a base for a 100% run. Just add emeralds I guess. http://www.soniccenter.org/videos/sonic_1

There's already been a Sonic 1 all emeralds rejected for poor goal choice. Although, that may have had to do with the level routes being so similar to the standard "fastest time" routes. And with the additional glitching, that may no longer be the case. Although it may also have had something to do with the author's choice to minimize time loss to score tallies rather than go for the fastest level completion time.

Indeed, I know about it- half the reason I posted, as the rings help deferenceate it from the any%. I was thinking more about all rings rather than all emeralds, but they seem to go hand in hand. Not to mention 100% is a more traditional goal than 'all rings.' I only mention it as this is 'the "other" Sonic run topic.' Like comicalflop said in the 1st reply Sonic runs are for speed. Adamant though that a All Chaos Emeralds run for Advance 2 would be awesome... ...Yeah the waiting at the goal post irked me too. (Despite the fact it seems at little illogical for it to.)

All rings isnt possible in sonic 2 for those that mention it, some are programmed into walls.

I don't remember any impossible rings in Sonic 2... Sonic CD had rings you could only grab in certain time periods, though.

The idea's been canvassed in the Knuckles in Sonic 1 hack, since it's been proven that 0 rings is possible there. For added effect, I'd say you can't collect items either (ie. no shields, invincibility, maybe speed shoes too but it'd be somewhat a pity to leave those out). I might give this project another spin in July when I have a break. If you bug me enough about it beforehand I'm sure I'll be able to fit some time in when I should be studying though :)

I know this topic hasn't been posted in for some time, but it's really the only relevant place to put this. I've started work on my no-ring run of the Knuckles in Sonic 1 hack again. Progress through [EDIT!] Marble 2 is here. Those of you who followed my last effort will note that the times this time around are slower. I've made a conscious decision to play "through" the levels rather than just gliding over them - call it a speed/entertainment tradeoff. In addition to no rings, I'm also ignoring shields and invincibility, so as to bypass any means of avoiding damage. I was going to skip all items and make it a genuine 0%, but the speed shoes are just too cool to ignore.
