>24 should be possible. It is, because that's the time in JXQs published run.

24 secs is possible nfq, but there are methodical errors which cause you not to get it. I triesd to get, but I couldn't after sycronising the current run and my test run on the first stage I realised that JXQ was getting a much more efficent loop jump compared to me. I was impressed that you did get the optimal loop jump. The only thing I will say is that you should do a pixel perfect jump over the spikes at the end. Anyway I've been trying act 3 and after the juggling act I missed Robotnik, can anyone explain why and how to correct it Here it is http://rapidshare.de/files/21387890/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html

Truncated: JXQ only collects 42 rings. It remains to be seen if you can get 8 more rings without losing too many frames. AKA: You miss Robotnik because you aren't moving fast enough and you didn't bounce high enough. Try never pressing back in this level. You do it a number of times for no reason I can discern. Also, make sure you bounce as high as possible off your last bounce by holding the jump button.

amy hack is cute, 18s act 2: http://rapidshare.de/files/21399535/Sonic_The_Hedgehog__W___REV_00_____.gmv.html there are many possibilities on this level, maybe 17 is impossible but i have to try jump on that ring tv at the end.

Damm you nfq, maybe we should team up. I assume you want to go for the fastest stage time. The reason I'm going for a fastest frame time is because certain levels like Spring Yard would be much simplier to do if your collecting 50 rings in 30 secs. I agree that 17 secs is impossible to do for act 2 The stages I thought up for getting the emeralds are Green hill 1+2 Marble 2 Spring Yard 1+2 X stage inbetween Spring Yard and Scrap Brain Scrap Brain 2 The one thing I've noticed is that an even amount of rings gives you a damage boost to the right and vice versa for odd. I think my special stage 2 up until doing the final bit of the emerald is near perfect, but I guess there are probally alternates.

maybe you should study the levels more... marble1 should definitely be on the list, you can get 50 rings without losing almost any time. watch JXQ's run and count the rings on each level!!

lol, you're kidding... it can be done a lot faster, did you notice my first special stage was like a million seconds faster than yours!!

Yes, I know you have a much faster 1st special stage than me. I have to admit I haven't played this game for about 2 years. so l'm just trying to work out stuff as I go along, at least someone sympathises with the difficulty of the special stages. I look forward to seeing your version of the second special stage. I'll tell you what, why don't I continue and do a sort of dummy run on Marble 1, the reason I initailly said we shouldn't get 50 rings on Marble 1 is because of all these damage related tricks, but maybe the trick with the spikes at the start should be avoided so the shield damage could be used for the falling in the lava area. So I guess now that the emeralds should be done done like this Green Hill 1+2 Marble 1+2 Spring Yard 1+2 Scrap Brain 2 Oh and nfq, to be entirely neutral you don't have to over emphasise your brillance compared to me as its much easier to spot the mistakes in someone else's run, than your own. This applies to both of us.

Maximum respect JXQ that was certainly a hard act to follow (lol). I suspect I need to improve my robotnik battle and yeah not very good jump on the switch. I need some expert to tell me what I need to do different. http://rapidshare.de/files/21476487/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html My advice would be to use lots of back ground markers so you know exactly how long you need to hold down the jump button. Every jump exept for one had to be positioned and timed frame perfect Here it is. I'll improve it pending on advice

enable frame counter so you don't have to use background markers. except the robotnik last hit and the switch, you also lose 12 frames in the beginning because you don't jump at the first possible frame.

i think it was xebra who originally came up with that strat. http://rapidshare.de/files/21481305/Sonic_The_Hedgehog__W___REV_00_____.gmv.html btw, no one probably noticed but i found a small 20 frame improvement at the glitch place on act2.

thats impresive, is there a way to correct the mistake at the start without having to go through the nighmare of redoing the rest of the stage. It does sound bad losing 1/5 of a second or 0.19x to be more exact. I was hoping to do that stage in 30 secs, but trust me robotnik probally can't be beat in one visit because when he begins to lower the ball you cannot bounce off him unless the inital impact to be cushioned better. I only did one thing different and I'll time the stage against JXQ to see who iniatles the long jumping section the fastest (minus my mistake at the start). I only did one thing slightly different anyway. I'd advise you just copy by watching when me or JXQ hold and release to A button. Edit: Dammit- minus the mistake at the start I was 19 frames slower in reaching robotnik

AKA: There's only six chaos emeralds in this game, and even so you can't get a chaos emerald in Scrap Brain 2.

There are at least two different "paths" to bounce from enemy to enemy in Act 3. Xebra came up with the first one, mine is just a slight modification that isn't faster or slower. AKA: If you are starting to worry about frames, I would strongly suggest doing the first couple acts over again with more precision. nfq: Wow, nice find in GH2. Clever!

I'm just gonna slightly improve the robotnik battle and switch and then continue up to Spring Yard 2 and then restart again, but still going for a low frame count. I have some ideas that might knock a few frames off nfq's current run. There is only one small improvement in act 3 that might save a frame. Can someone confirm that you need six chaos emeralds and not seven. The most fun part of the game is certainly collecting the rings. In Marble 1 is it best to not do the first damage trick or should I do it and get the second shield on the left past the post.

There are only 6 emeralds. Plot wise its why you can turn super and that. Its the purple one thats missing IIRC.

I've been trying the marble zone and can't manipulate the luck for the moving platform where the shield is. Do I just come at a later time http://rapidshare.de/files/21542710/Sonic_the_Hedgehog.gmv.html

I always thought you could get only one emerald per zone and if you tried it again in the same zone you wouldn't get a new one but I suppose that was a later Sonic game.

That would be Sonic Advance 2 and Sonic Rush that you are thinking of. :P

Actually, the colors of the emeralds changes every game. But yeah, in sonic 1 there are only six. In sonic 2+ there are at least 7. (In sonic spinball, there are what, 20?)

I know, I just meant your last hit, but you improved it now anyway.

The damage trick doesn't save that much time, you might lose more time if you get the shield, but there's also a shield near the moving platform in the beginning.

Yea, you just need to be faster. When collecting the rings we lose some frames, but I think it's possible to be fast enough. If not, get the shield.

JXQ got a damage boost right when he had 19 rings :/

The lava damage saves a lot of time, but I'll avoid doing the spike trick. Ok I'll go for all out speed so I can get past the moving block without waiting.

Hm, finally got around to watching that WIP. I'd say you should definitely go for shortest in-level time, not shortest overall. It's about entertainment first and foremost and the choices you made in the first act to waste time really don't look good.
