Yeah, I looked up stuff on the game just a few weeks ago and found out it was "God Slayer" overseas. Especially in that time I can understand why so much stuff was censored, though. Was surprised it indeed had a 1989 Japanese release date, making it only the 2nd or 3rd NES 3-mega cartridge after Mario 3 and maybe Akumajou Densetsu...it was well ahead of its time.

Yeah, "Crystalis" sounds more like some boring puzzle game where you run around and pick up giant crystals in a maze or something. That may explain why I haven't actually tried this game yet... (Hey, wasn't there a game for PC that was called Crystalis but had nothing to do with this game? I forget...)

Ok Crystalis fans, after taking a break to do a Mario Land run among other things, I am back to this game. This next WIP covers the whole swamp, which was a very tough place to optimize due to randomness of enemy movements. As I did in the last levelup sequence, enemy spawns are optimized, which was much more difficult than the last time. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out though--the swamp area is done about 45 seconds faster than in my last run, and on entering the mountain, I'm a minute and half ahead in total. Of course since I have less experience at the same point I need to kill a few extra ice zombies to make up the difference. Since the zombies are worth more, this is definitely a gain. http://home.comcast.net/~f_amoroso/Crystalis-TheAxeManv0.6.fcm Coming up is a long long levelup block, which will take about 5 minutes. I will squeeze out as much time as possible, but there's not as much room for improvement here since the loop I used before solves the problem of planning out the spawns.

I finally tried playing the gbc remake of this game and found out it's quite different. A timeattack might be interesting, but certainly much different from either NES version. Obviously a handheld system has no second controller to perform the wild warp on, and the other bugs I use also seem to be fixed. However, the world was shrunk down to fit the small screen, so everything goes faster. I haven't been able to fully explore it since VBA crashes in the second valley, but it looks like it's not necessary to switch swords or gain levels to hit enemies. A run through this version might be significantly faster. However, as a remake this version loses much of the classic appeal of the original. The soundtrack is crap, which is really sad because I absolutely love the NES sound. Overall this version seems less challenging, and there are fewer bugs to exploit. So the NES run is definitely my choice, but if I can get past that bug I'd consider a warpless GBC run, partly because I really like Nitsuja's VBA enhancements and partly because it would be much shorter and easier to make.

The GBC version is far easier to play. No enemies are immune to weapons. They may be weaker to some, but you can kill everything with each weapon. Honestly, I don't like the GBC game at all, so I wouldn't be nearly as interested in it as I would be in a non-warp version of the NES game.

Dunno, sounds like fun to me. Although you're right, probably not quite as fun as Crystalis. And I think you're thinking of Crystal Caves, from Apogee.

Yeah, I noticed that it was reaching the top of the queue as far as vote tally. Now I need to work on blowing it away. :) I hadn't thought that the wild warp would be a big deal to anyone, without it there is just a lot of extra walking and backtracking in many places. It doesn't even break the game open that much. Anyway, hopefully I'll feel like working on this again soon, but I probably won't post another preview for a while since I have a long levelup sequence coming.

The wild warp really isn't much different than the reset codes for metroid or zelda. I don't see anything wrong with using it. I do think that most people would enjoy the run more if it wasn't used, simply because the leveling wouldn't seem quite so bad. Planning routes would probably be way worse though. I do hope you eventually do a warpless route through the game.

The metroid/zelda reset codes are listed in at least some of the instruction booklets for those games (or, alternatively, could be extrapolated on the basis of "well, it worked for Z1, it should work for Z2"). AFAIK, the Crystalis code is not formally documented anywhere. That said, Crystalis would be a lot less enjoyable if you had to watch someone play through all of the events -- it's incredibly linear (and probably over 2x as long) without it.

Yeah, I think that the warp was probably there for testing and they just forgot to take it out, or something. So in my opinion it's sort of like abusing programming errors, but that's just me. The story parts do add a chunk of time, but on the positive side, the two beginning bosses wouldn't be skipped (since I find them to be interesting since they're the two I played against most often), there would be less exp grinding to make it seem like less time is spent on getting exp, and someone who hasn't played through the game might have a clue as to what's going on. But obviously the downsides are a longer run time, trickier optimization of gaining experience, and often boring story which isn't even seen by the viewer because the text is only there for a frame or two.

AxeMan: AWESOME movie! I've been a Crystalis fan forever so this was a real treat for me (I didn't even get bored at the ice zombies!). I'd also be very interested in seeing a warpless run (or, at least a wild-warpless run) sometime in the future. One thing I'm sure of is that you do not have to speak to Ralph before entering Evil Spirit Island. Merely entering Joel and then exiting is enough. Should save a second or two.

It's possible to push past some people who are in your way, specifically the statue peoples (the ones you need the flute of lime for) and the person in Amazones blocking the stairs to the blizzard bracelet. If you walk into them at the right angle and keep pressing the right way, eventually you start to slide through. I'm not sure if it would be any faster, or if there's some other triggers to think about, but its a thought.

I went back and tried the push maneuver on the statue people: it works, and is much faster than running around town for the Flute (and more interesting, in my opinion, to exploit a glitch than to run the plotline quickly). If you stand on the right side of the two petrified people, and press Down+Left, you will move leftward and upward through them. Once you are out enough, you can press Up and continue on your way. The only downside is that they constantly say "........." at you for the few seconds you are passing through (a small price to pay for the time you save). It is also possible to get back after getting the Sword of Water without warping, but warping is obviously the fastest way out. You don't have to talk to the queen at all, just go straight to the cave when you have enough Exp. Ps. DanceDanceRevolution is the greatest! Hope you recover and get back to it :)

Ah, excellent. Unfortunately, this means I have an extra warp boot or two, but I may be able to hex them out. Looks like I'll change my path after warping into Portoa's valley and getting paralysis (still needed for Kensu to get change.) I still need to go to Portoa later and get behind the queen's throne to get the dolphin's flute. I may need to step in and out of town to get it on my teleport list and warp boot to it after getting the Kirisa plant. The alternative is a full cycle through the wild warp sequence, which may be faster, I'll see. By the way, I didn't hurt myself playing DDR, I actually picked it up recently as exercise that isn't so hard on my new knee. It's really helping me get my coordination and stability back. Well, maybe I'll work my new dance moves into this run...

Thanks for asking, but sorry, no. I did do that Boy and His Blob run which was a nice timeattacking fix. I haven't even opened up this game in a while, I need to examine that trick in the waterfall. I guess I'm less than excited about doing the long levelup sequence in super-high quality, though I know it will look impressive when I'm done. I'm sure once that's over, I'll be on a roll.

If the Zelda 3 walking through walls glitch run can not only be accepted, but get a star, I see no reason why there should have been any controversy over the wild warp. Oh, and I'm no doctor (and I don't play one on TV), but wouldn't DDR be kinda stressful for your knee? Granted, not nearly as bad as playing say, basketball, but the traditional knee rehab activities are low-impact like cycling and swimming.

I haven't watched the video, so I can't say for sure if you're exploiting this. Using the telepathy spell will occasionally get the wisemen to restore your magic points (if I remember right). Luck manipulation here might allow you more use of your high level attacks.
