This movie is 14705 frames faster than my previous version, which is about 4 minutes and 5 seconds. The previous movie was the first TAS I ever made and it was made with Famtasia. This means I had both less experience and many tools were unavailable at the time. The following things helped me greatly in making this improvement:
  • A frame counter
  • Frame advance
  • Luck manipulation
  • RAM addresses
  • Glitches

A frame counter and frame advance speak for themselves and helped on the other three points. I'll comment on these other three points:

Luck manipulation / RAM addresses

I used the following RAM addresses:
  • 00B1
    • Gives you the level X position. After you beat a group of foot soldiers you can easily check at what frame you are able to scroll the level again. You also know exactly how far the level will scroll, which both is very handy.
  • 056F, 0571, 0573, 0575, 0577 and 0579
    • Give you the enemy HP of the enemy #1, #2, #3, #4, #5 and #6. Since a boss is also an enemy, it will also give you the boss hp. This is of course helpful in getting the boss optimally.
  • 0581, 0583, 0585, 0587, 0589 and 0591
    • These give you the randomness of enemy #1, #2, #3, #4, #5 and #6. The first frame you are able to hit an enemy, this value will turn 1.

Every enemy entering the screen is random. The spot where it enters, and the frame you are able to hit it are determined by the frame you complete the scrolling of the screen, and the frame the last enemy died (there can three foots at most on screen). I constantly had to try lots of situations in killing enemies at different times, and intentionally waiting frames when scrolling the screen. This process was very frustrating! Since I knew more about luck manipulation, I was able to get better bossfights as well this time. The snow level boss might still look a bit random, but even this fight follows a certain pattern if you watch closely.

Glitches

When testing some stuff, I stumbled on the following:
  • Pressing left+right (on the ground or in the air)
    • Makes your turtle walk on the same spot. This is useful to make the screen scroll while you are keeping your position, so you'll move left.
  • Pressing up+down in the air
    • Makes your turtle move really fast to the upper left.
  • Pressing left+right+up in the air
    • Makes your turtle move really fast to the lower right.
  • Pressing up+down+left in the air
    • Makes your turtle move instantly to the lower left.
  • Pressing up+down+right in the air
    • Makes your turtle move instantly to the lower right.
  • Pressing up+down+left+right in the air
    • Makes your turtle move instantly up.

I use these (and maybe a few other less important ones) to move around the screen with high speeds, which greatly helped making the movie. It might even look easy, but this isn't true. You are still limited in what direction you can zip, and you can also zip twice if you want to to a A+B attack with it. Every screen was like a puzzle that needed to be solved, to get the best randomness, and the killing the enemies as fast as possible. The glitches were also used to create some cool effects. It enables you stuff like moving from the left side of the screen to the right side and other things. Too much to explain everything, just try around with it a little yourself!

Other stuff

I tried to keep this entire movie high paced, which was sometimes pretty hard. You always have some free time to spend after killing the last foot at a screen, or while scrolling. I tried to make those moments as well as the moments where I actually fight to look as interesting as possible, without doing the same things over and over.
I'd like to thank everyone who showed interest in this movie, it's always motivating to hear people are looking out for it!
Special thanks to AngerFist, who after I showed him a preview of what was possible with the glitch insisted to put everything else aside to work on this movie. He watched my wips and motivated me to keep at it.
Enjoy!

adelikat: HUGE improvement over the author's previous run in both time and entertainment value. Accepting

Since I had the honor of following closely this WIP from scratch, Im confident when I say this run deserves a star. That being said, I think everyone agrees with me that Baxter totally did his research and destroyed the game. Wrapping and whatnot :) A star run

A star? Don't you think that's exaggerating just a bit? It's a very repetitive beat'em up game. No matter how fast you can complete this game in my book it should definitely never get a star. I think the whole "GIVE THIS A STAR!" business is getting out of hand. As for the run, it was great and I liked it.

I dont think so. Its all matter of opinions as I dont understand a bit why you dont want SprintGod's S3&K run to get its star back :)

The S3&K run is another matter. This game just isn't star material. I don't think it's completely a matter of opinion. This game here is almost self-scrolling and extremely repetitive. Even the wrapping around gets old after 20 minutes (not to offend the run, it was mostly very good and entertaining).

If that aint a opinion then I dont what is. There are (Im sure there are a lot of people agreeing with me on this one) a few starred runs that clearly doesnt deserve their stars as this run is better than them. But lets drop the subject.

Here's a screenshot that sums up pretty much everything about this run And I guess I have to hack the rating system and give this run 15 for entertainment.

Donatello has discovered the 7th sense, and is now the ultimate ninja. There were boring parts, i think, due to repetitiveness, but there were funny parts too, and the whole degree of game domination is very good too. Yep

Oh, and uhh, really great job on this movie. It was almost fun to watch. I can say with certainty that were it only 8 minutes long, I would have really enjoyed it. Instant yes vote, but a pox on the developers for making a long and boring game.

I hate Donatello. If it were Michaelangelo, it would heve been an yes.

Hey, Don sucks. ;) I'd choose Raph. :) Damn, but you rock! Whole halfhour of awesomeness! Yes vote right away. Skating level was especially funny. Those warps became little boring to watch at the last level, maybe you should rewrite last level when new ideas appear. Then it'd be absolutely brilliant.

Hehe, finally I understand the japanese banners in the paper house. 日本一 : best in Japan 武道 : budo 一日一悪 : this one cracked me up, it's "one evil deed every day", a play on 一日一善 I liked the teleporting, and that you mixed it up with regular walking every now and then. Minus 10 points for not hitting the girl on the skateboard, though. :(

Voted yes because the bizarre teleporting was amusing. I agree with Kyrsimys, this run doesn't deserve a star. The run is entertaining, but the game is very repetitive. The bulk of the run is appearing in random spots and jump slashing enemies to death. I started to fast forward through some parts around the 6th stage because there was so much jump slashing. Personally I think the SOR2 TAS is a lot more entertaining because the game has better move variety (that and mania is impossible to beat on one life normally). I agree with Angerfist about one thing though, bring back S3&K's star.

Just watched this and I have to vote yes. Donatello teleporting all over the place was just amazing. Great job!

Thanks all, for liking it :) I tried to give the run as much variety as possible, but it was pretty hard with the very limited moves of the turtle in this game. I can see why it might be a little repetetive after ~1000 A+B-attacks, but I don't think there's much to do about that. Good thing this movie is 4 minutes shorter than the previous version ;) Glad I'm finally done with this run :) Not only manipulating the place where the enemies enter, but the frame at which they turn vulnerable too was very frustrating. Now all my runs are FCEUed :)

"It took Baxter a while to develop his Turtle Power, but he came with an astonishing result: Donatello can now teleport all over the screen at his will, walk through almost every solid object and much much more." :D Dude, this is awesome. I never imagined this game to be so interesting in a TAS. By the way, this may be a funny thing, but I know about the screen wrap glitch cause I've incidentally done it while playing about a year ago. I completely forgot it until I read your submission text, though. I'd say this run doesn't deserve an overall rating lower than 8.3.
