Introduction

This is an improvement of VIPer7's 96 exit Super Mario World run. It's 7724 frames, or 2 minutes, 8 seconds and 44 frames, faster. However, VIPer7 did not end his movie at the final hit on Bowser, the time difference at that point is 4340 frames (1 minute, 12 seconds and 20 frames). Techniques and strategies leading to this improvement are detailed below.
My biggest challenge when making this run was to come up with something I felt was worth watching. With all the recent SMW and SDW runs, ending up with a fresh looking and original final product has been very difficult. Trying to make each level as entertaining and fun as possible, to prevent the viewer from getting bored, has been my number one priority at all times. I do hope you will enjoy watching this movie, even if you've seen several Super Mario World or Super Demo World movies in the past.

Techniques used

Nearly every technique described on the Super Mario World Tricks Page has been used. The most important difference from VIPer7's run is the abuse of Mario's oscillating speed. When holding "forward", Mario's speed oscillates between several different values. If "forward" is released on the right frame while in mid-air, the oscillation will stop at Mario's fastest speed. This speed can then be kept up by continuously jumping on the first frame Mario touches the ground, which is commonly known as the "hopping glitch". This works both with flying and running, as well as Mario's medium running speed. This "hopping glitch" can be used to your advantage in many situations and you'll see me using this technique in one way or another in many levels.
There's one other thing I'll describe, since it's not on the tricks page yet; Yoshi flight. Flying with Yoshi is usually the exact same thing as spin flying, which is the same speed as regular running. With the Yoshi flight glitch, however, Mario and Yoshi move as fast as regular flying. This can be initiated in several different ways, two of which are used in this movie. The first is to dive onto Yoshi while Yoshi is standing on a shell (see Vanilla Dome 3 and Vanilla Dome 4), the second is to dismount Yoshi when flying pressed to a ceiling (see Valley of Bowser 3 and Valley of Bowser 4b). The second method is often considerably faster, and it's worth noting this technique was not known at the start of this run. Had it been, it could have been used to save time in Cheese Bridge Area, and possibly have been faster overall in Vanilla Dome 4, although this has not been tested.
If you're unsure about anything, I recommend checking the tricks page, and if that doesn't answer your question, ask me.

Other things

I want to thank JXQ for his constant support and feedback, always listening to me whine and helping me with hexediting, among many other things. Thanks man.
I also want to thank jimsfriend for help with level strategies and lots of ideas.
Lastly I want to thank all of you who have offered encouragement, helped me test ideas and shown interest in my run. I really appreciate it everybody.

I've been lucky enough to watch this run as it progressed. I must say that as far as platforming goes, TASing doesn't get much more entertaining than this. (And as far as TASing goes, platformers are WHERE IT'S AT) My 10 favorite levels: Donut Plains 3 Vanilla Dome 2 (secret) Vanilla Dome 3 Awesome Donut Plains 2 Donut Plains 2 (secret) Butter Bridge 2 Forest Fortress Chocolate Island 2 (secret) Chocolate Island 4 Mario almost looks bored as he effortlessly hops on and flies between hoards of enemies, grabbing and throwing shells every which-way, and taking inexplicable shortcuts through walls and floors. Fabian can create haphazard circumstances in this game like I've never imagined. With the exception of a few water levels, this run is pretty much non-stop craziness. Without a doubt, one of my favorite runs to date.

I've already made all my comments in IRC, but to summarize them...

  • Wha?
  • That's disgusting!

Recording date: Nov 25 2005 :O At the start of the movie I was having trouble seeing any appreciable difference between your movie and VIPer's. As the run went on, though, I started to notice some key differences. As cool as VIPer's run was, his did not have Mario fly under lava ONCE! So this gets a yes :)

BEST TAS EVER! Seriously, I have never seen a TAS that comes anywhere close to comparing to this one. It is without a doubt my all-time favorite. Not only will I vote a definate and resounding yes, but I will insist that this movie is given a STAR and even go so far as to say that it should be the first video in the "movies recommended for first time viewers" list. I have been following this run's progress from the beginning, and I had very high expectations for it. After watching it, my expectations were completely shattered. I was absolutely blown away. When I first saw VIPer7's run, I thought to myself "Wow, thats as good as it gets. You cant play SMW any better than that." Boy was I wrong. The way Fabian effortlessly destroys everything in his path while never slowing down is a thing of beauty. Fabian, I may have lost our race, but it was worth it. Seeing this run completed is something I have been waiting for for a very long time. Congrats on an awesome run! Now, I'm off to go watch it again. ;)

When you look at the quality of VIPer7's, and you think of trying to make a superior TAS for it, you realize that it isn't that simple. But my goodness, what I just witnessed, words cannot describe so I'm just going to say wow a few times and vote yes. Wow wow wow!!!

Easy yes vote indeed. Amazing tricks, unexpected moves, and an improvement on an existing run. Definite star material. ^^
<Zurreco> if so called professional players cant adapt to every playing field, theyre obviously not that great

Vanilla Dome 1 was also very cool. Still watching. This is very cool indeed. And I agree that platformers are the best kind of TASes :) [Edit: I meant 1.. not 2]

Awesome TAS! My favourite levels were Mortons Castle, Vanilla Dome 3, Donut Plains 2 (what an awesome juggling of 5 or more items in the same time!), the Razor boss kills, Valley of Bowser 4 (great and tight moves even in the most narrow passages) and of course this awesome move through walls glitch that saved alot of time in many levels. After so many new tricks I have seen, to be honest, I thought the completion time would be even more faster than what it is currently but of course I don't know everything until the smalles detail to make guesses here. It looks extremely optimized in every level and I honestly couldn't see any possible improvements here. Voting YES with a Star of course. Great job Fabian!

What exactly did you have in mind? Dont forget to leave out Yoshis Island 2 as a cool level. That is the first level and is also really boring, so the tricks you pull on it set the tone for the whole run. The way you did the 2 up at the beginning alone convinced me that this run was going to be awesome. The way you switched the green and red shell is exactly what skamastaG does for our run on console. ;) I second all the levels JXQ mentioned plus any level where you flew through the ground and Castle #2 and FoI4.

When you reached Vanilla Dome I was suddently sure that this is star worthy. Although I'm not sure if a 100% run should represent SMW in the stars section, many people might want to see the shorter movie first. Maybe JXQ's run shouldn't get unstared?
