Here is my second attempt on making Rad Racer 2 TAS....... And i must say, this one i MUCH better than previous one.
  • recorded on FCEU 0.98.13
  • number of frames 71407
  • undo count 1324 (i tried hard..)
Anyway, i tried to save as much time as i can (mainly on course time).
  • I crash at finish line to stop faster
  • Used other music (few less frames is better than nothing)
  • Used brakes less time (mainly on later stages only).
Anyway, here is the compare of the previous times and current ones.
CoursePrevious timeV2 timeSaved
12'19"32'18"01.3 sec
22'05"02'04"30.7 sec
32'08"52'07"11.4 sec
42'21"92'20"91.0 sec
52'19"62'19"30.3 sec
62'27"72'23'14.6 sec
72'25"32'23"71.6 sec
82'26"32'23"13.2 sec
IMO quite good improvement for course 6 and 8.... Total saved: 14.1 SECONDS!
Ok, i will say more about it: "Extreme overtaking"......overtaking cars when you are near offroad, very risky manuver when doing in realtime
Course 1: that >0.1 sec. improved came from few frames eariler boost start (boosted at exact frame). Also, there were few corners where i slowed down a little and even go offroad (on purpose of course)
Course 2: nothing too much to say about that one...i just stayed at 255 MPH during the whole course.
Course 3: gone offroad few times to conserve time.
Course 4: in some places i barely made from corner (1 frame later, and i would hit offroad). Again, not too mach to say about it....
Course 5: i stayed at 255 mph whole time....like on course 2
Course 6: braking every now and then.....otherwise i would hit trees. Also i drifted few times. I pushed my skills and a car to it's limit here XD
Course 7: duh, i hate long corners....i hate them even more when i must to stay close to offroad to overtake other cars...
Course 8: again pushed my skills and a car to it's limit. A lot of risky manuvers (taking sharp corners fast, bouncing and "extreme overtaking"). Overall, that was hard.
Meh...i don't know how to improve that run. If you can do it, feel free to try. I hope you like that run.

adelikat: Rejecting, reasons are stated in my last post in the discussion forum.

This run is much, much better than your last. Especially tracks 6 and 8 (which I actually mentioned specifically in your last run ;). You also pull off a lot of impressive maneuvers, particularly in track 6, which was nice to see. If these times could be beaten, it's only by a matter of a couple of frames. Voting yes :)

I'm not so thrilled about it. For one it's a race-game without weapons or items. It's virtually a scroller. You're crashing into cars and hitting the dirt a lot. Sure you don't break a lot, but this is the same. I'd say, you have the power of slowdown and premonition at your command... use it. If at some point you hit the dirt in a corner, rerecord and slow down until you don't hit the dirt. If you bump into a car, rerecord and don't. This of course not for the kisses you seem to make on purpose (but only if these dont slow you down either, if that's the case, more kisses are a pre ;) and the crashing at the end. I'm voting no because the beginning is rather sloppy and since this game doesn't have a lot of things to take care of I think not slowing down unless absolutely required should be one of them.

*sigh*...... Going off road, and crashing at the finish line WAS DONE ON PURPOSE, TO CUT DOWN THE TOTAL TIME. Crashing at the finish line made stop you faster, and also (about off road) i even started the course from the beginning to not hit it, but i think that hitting offroad is better than instantly slowing to this 170 MPH.......because you can hit offroad at full speed and deccelerate a little and after corner you could have for example 190 mph. About bumping from other cars, easier to made from corner and that was also for entertaiment......

Then, you say that racing game without weapons and other powerup, and beacause it's a scroller sux? ............................i leave that without commentary.... EDIT: if you think that you can make faster time, go ahead, cause i bet that you never attempted to make TAS from RR2 and you don't know that bumping and going off road was a STRATEGY (just like RR1 TAS by Saturn).

This submission should have had a much better description. Basically everything I wrote in this post: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=89293#89293 Basically, braking is a lot slower than going off the road for a bit. Once you're off the road, you can use the accelerator and turbo charger again, and so it hardly slows you down at all. The other alternative is to let off the accelerator while going around a curve. This doesn't always work though. In the first track, for example, there a curve on which you need to be going 180 MPH or so not to skid, whereas going off the road a bit only drops you down to 205 or so. Naturally going off road is a faster choice. Hitting cars on from the side doesn't slow you down at all. It doesn't take a whole lot of observation skill to see that he is still travelling top speed after a side collision. It's also very useful for going around corners. Hitting a car from behind does slow you down; however, this run doesn't do this at all. I think it is an unfair analysis to say that this run is sloppy without knowing the game at all.

I thought this was well done for a racing game, and it wasn't so long that I got bored of it (I can only watch games like this for so long). A yes from me.

It isn't that boring at 150% speed, but I still don't know if it really worth publishing here, and I don't know if it should replace RR1 TAS (from my point of view, both are almost identically boring). I'll vote yes, but I would say this run deserves only 4E/8T.

Well, the rating beats the crap out of RR1.

Actually, on my scale it is exactly the same as RR1 run (as I rated it with 4/8 as well). :D

Voted yes on the condition that it replaces RR1 - There shouldn't be two of these games published. It actually is interesting to watch when sped up a lot and is a little better than the first run. Still not particularly entertaining, but good enough to boot out RR1 IMO.

What a strange request. I disagree. They aren't the same game, and shouldn't be judged as such.

Not a strange request - go read through TheSwordUser's cancelled submission of this game for the discussion about this.

Well, thank you for positive comments and votes. About replacing the old RR1 tas......sorry to say that but these two games are diffirent (at least they are not the same, but similar). The main diffirence between them is gameplay. Major change to the gameplay in RR2 is that TURBO start (charge it and start at max speed). Also there were minor changes (such as crash animation or other interface). And one more thing, you said that RR1 has very low ranking (4.something and i agree with that) but that does NOT mean that the RR2 "sux big time" too...(it's looking better and the music is better too.....the game is just more interesting).

The game may be more interesting, but there is a significant difference between the game and the run. Even if the game is different, the run looks nearly the same.

It feels like backstabbing, though. If I make a run of one game and it gets published, why should it get deleted just because someone ran a completely different game?

Exactly. I hope whomever publishes the game doesn't do that because it's basically saying, "your run sucks, so we're putting this different game in place of it." By that logic, I could request SMB2 replace any SMB runs because they're both built on the same engine, and both use similar tactics.

It wouldn't be a completely different game, it would have to be a very similar game (essentially the same). at least superficially, smb2 appears quite different than smb1 whereas, I can tell little difference among these games (coming from somone who hasn't played either). Anyway, that decision hasn't been made. People posted opinions will decide that. After watching both runs, I would say that neither is much more entertaining than the other. I would probably rate these the same. As such, I can't justify replacing it with the existing one. Though, had you done this run and got it published and the RR1 submission was up for judging, then I would be saying the same thing about it. Anyway, I am voting no. I can't justify having both runs nor can I justify replacing one with the other. Sorry.

voting yes, and it should NOT replace a run for another game. that's silly. "We should not have two of these published here" why? is there a valid reason why both games can't be put on? Is it a server issue? is someone going to complain? will having both runs cause you physical pain or mental anguish? obviously the other run was voted to publication, so now it should be obsoleted by something that's not an improvement but a totally different game? if you feel that strongly that there should only be one game in this series represented (and i can't see why) then why vote yes on this one?

We have 4 Battletoads runs and 4 Metroid runs. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I agree. It's kidna no fair that run from DIFFIRENT game should be replaced because this run is pretty simmilar to that run from this other game...really. You not going to lose anything if you gonna AT LEAST accept it.

Another good argument. If there are 4 of these games TASes, so why you don't want to publish TAS from Rad Racer 2? Sorry, but i don't want to hear an explanation such as "because run are similar to each other" or "because we don't like/want to have TASes from both games published". Just because you and few other people don't want it, that does not mean that others don't want it too.....

There's one strong reason: the general opinion is that RR games suck pretty much. The quality standards of this site are constatnly rising, and one of the judges' primary objectives is to evaluate movies in a way so that the overall quality of the movies on the site will rise, not fall. That doesn't only rely on the technical quality of the run, but also on the entertainment value. And the latter clearly is below the line. Having only one RR run clearly is enough, having both may be not acceptable.

The "4 of xxx runs on the site" is not a good argument. In those cases: a) Those games are very ENTERTAINING and warrant multiple runs b) The objectives are quite different (more different than the overall these two runs, despite the fact that they are different games). c) Even if a good argument can be made that we shouldn't have those runs, it does make a good argument for publishing more unwanted runs The obsoleting RR1 was brought up because it was "on the table" and the only way that this run was going to get accepted provided that the general audience agrees with it. Obviously it is clear that people do not like this idea so I will proceed with rejecting this run. Sorry, better luck next time.

...... This is starting to be annoying. REALLY. Every TAS that i made was rejected or cancelled (well, for these previous, i understand that, but for rejecting THIS run, that earned more YES votes than NO.....this is just unfair.). *Throws the bag full of TAS tools, games etc.*...i am quit TASing. I stick with MMBN games, cause it's still a thing that i am good at (and no one complaining about them...i mean no one say something like "meh, i can teh beat your time you n00b" (that was just an example)). Farewell. EDIT:
c) Even if a good argument can be made that we shouldn't have those runs, it does make a good argument for publishing more unwanted runs
(don't think that i didn't read it before posting, cause i bet somebody gonna brought this up)

>Every TAS that i made was rejected or cancelled (well, for these previous, i understand that ... If the previous runs were rejected fairly in your opinon, why did you bring them up? >rejecting THIS run, that earned more YES votes than NO.....this is just unfair. It's not a simple majority, even if the votes are important. 5 yes and 2 no is not very overwhelming feedback for a submission, but it could of course be enough if the judge deems it interesting. I also think 3 (we don't have 4) Battletoads and 4 Metroids are too much (2 and 2, possibly 3 respectively would suffice in my view), but like adelikat said, bad decisions in the past is not a good reason to continue making bad decisions. I should mention that I haven't seen this movie, but perhaps I should if think you have been treated unfairly and want a second judge's opinion.
