Suggested description

The previous published movie's description was good, except I think an explanation of the blocks should be added: "The rectangular blocks in the later levels move by force applied to them, not by timer."

Thanks

  • Blechy and Bob Whoops - providing great base runs to work off of.
  • Blechy - making some maps and teaching me how to make maps too.
  • Nitsuja - for his level 1 demo (I used something more similar to it this time) and his work on snes9x.
  • Boco - showing us the game in the first place.
  • Wanikun, speed runner of the game - used an alternative method for field 11, which used a new glitch. Ultimately this is what inspired me to start this run, ironically this glitch was not used.

Comments

Umihara Kawase has many possibilities. It is difficult to optimize, but that is not why the rerecord count is so high, it is more because the sheer number of ways of doing a level, finding them and tweaking them to see which is the best. I can only hope I have found the best way of doing each level, but it would naive to think so.
Please enjoy!

First vote! Very short and brilliantly done. The only problem is: it's too short. :) So to say, will you ever consider doing an all-levels run? I remember many people wanted to see more levels of this game done perfectly.

Holy hell, you managed to imrpove that movie by seconds? That's amazing. An obvious Yes vote. The weird thing is that this movie is shorter than my Claymates run, and yet it has more opportunity to show off what you can do with the game. Oh, irony, why do you smite me so?

Thank you everyone. moozooh: I was considering also doing a longer route, possibly 0 1 2 10 11 18 23 24 25 29 34 35 (route with most new levels from this one without any waiting for bosses). But each field takes so long to do a good job, that if I try it I don't think I would aim for the same quality I did this time around.
g,o,p,i=1e4,a[10001];main(x){for(;p?g=g/x*p+a[p]*i+2*!o: 53^(printf("%.4d",o+g/i),p=i,o=g%i);a[p--]=g%x)x=p*2-1;}

Phil pre-accepted his own run of Combat Tribes, having a turn around time of about 2 minutes. Though, many people would later complain about the bias, not to mention the publication of a movie that many would have voted Meh/No on.

I agree with Moozooh, but this is still one of my favourite runs. I'll throw in a yes vote.

Haha, we'll see ;) But seriously, I've too much to do in school and home-stuff lately, so I've simply have had not much time for TAS more than watching one, once in a while. But TAS is still a big interest of mine, and once school is getting lighter on me, perhaps I just might submit a movie. Actually, I am working (really slowly though) on improving a published NES-run, and the improvement will be about 20-30 secondsperhaps I could post a WIP once I have one long- enough). But, as I said, I don't have as much time as I used to. I guess I'm getting off topic now. But just so you know that I haven't disappeared from this forum or anything. :)

This movie has been published. The posts before this message apply to the submission, and posts after this message apply to the published movie. ---- [690] SNES Umihara Kawase by flagitious in 01:46.42

To my surprise(*), the inheritance of the star icon actually worked with this publication. *) I had already forgotten I had implemented it.

That is probably the biggest rerecord to total time ratio I have ever seen. 34567/106 = 326 rerecords per second played. You've got amazing patience. This run is also insane.

Yowza. It's like Bionic Commando with schoolgirls and without guns. Kudos. I also would like to see a 100% run...

This is a good game and this is a good movie. After playing it for a while with a keyboard my hands got cramped. Now my hands get cramped by playing it on a DS. Summary. COOL/ IMPORTANT!!!! THIS MOVIE DOESN'T HAVE A STAR!!!

The star probably got removed at some point, we've done that to a fair few amount of runs, such as the Battle of Olympus or Donkey Kong Country (One of them, not sure which). Basically, they didn't stand the test of time well.

I don't think it's so much that they didn't stand the test of time as that the stars get cycled from time to time and there's more deserving runs than there are stars to hand out (i.e. stars are artificially limited). But that rapidly gets into a discussion of how the star system is meant to work, which doesn't belong in this thread.

I think this run would deserve its star back. One of the main purposes of stars is to give a hint to newcomers. "New here? Want to see some really cool TAS movies? Try these first to get you started." Thus the main target audience of starred movies are those people who have not yet seen any TAS movies yet (or only very few of them). A movie which is so fast-paced and/or glitched that it just leaves you wondering what the heck is going on might not be the best material for a first-time viewer. It might just look like the game is being corrupted somehow, and the viewer has no idea what's going on and why. Thus the best material for first-time viewers are those runs which are slick, comprehensible and easy to understand what's going on, while still being cool-looking. I think this movie is such. Hence it would deserve its star back.

Ok, so given that in the Clue submission there seemed to be some support amongst staff for updating old submissions with new ones on current emulators, I thought this one would be an excellent test case. 1. It is short 2. It is incredibly well optimized so a significant improvement is unlikely 3. It has it's own frame timer, so you can easily check that the re-synced file completes the levels in the same manner with the exception of more accurate lag. 4. There is no RNG, so nothing to raise concerns there. So, I wish to ask that the existing submission file be replaced with this one: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/21288338289808557 I'm glad I kept it around!

I second this replacement. Amaraticando has synced the current Super Mario World ''96 exits'' and ''small only'' TASes into lsnes, so it would be a good idea to replace them too!
