The way I see it, there are only a few really, really brilliant game hacks out there. While some only edit the main character or rearrange some things, every so often there's one that really surpasses the norm. Mario Adventure is one of these. It's a SMB3 hack that pretty much changes everything. It also adds a lot of things. For one thing, there are more power-ups, new items and enemies, added levels, etc. It's not hard to find, really. The thing with Mario Adventure is that it's really, really tough. Not "omgz, this is impossible" tough. But "this requires actual SKILL to beat" tough. The levels often have multiple paths through them, and I feel it'd be really interesting to see a complete runthrough of the game. I dunno what the general stance on gamehack runthroughs is... but I think Mario Adventure is a good enough overhaul to warrant a playthrough, as almost nothing from SMB3 is left intact. Hell, the creator even implemented a SMW-like item box. Lotta ASM hacking in it. After SNES rerecording gets stabilized, I'd like seeing a run of Super Demo World done, as well. Anyone out there actually played through the game, or am I just blowing air? I'd link to the site, but I dunno if it'd be allowed. The only thing there are IPS patches, and as far as I saw, no actual roms existed on the site, but...

I don't believe that links to ips patches will get you modded. Some guy did it on the rom hack thread about a week ago and its still there.

Hm.. alrighty then. o.o http://dahrkdaiz.panicus.org/Mario_Adventure/ Have a look about, give it a try. It's definitely fun to play, and it'd take some time to get pretty good at...

Does it even work in famtasia? It always crashed for me.
I like my "thank you"s in monetary form.

Not sure. I only use Famtasia to play things back. Since it doesn't seem to wanna support controllers, I use VirtuaNES for playing, and it works there. c.c;

A hack of Super Mario Bros. 3, which can be found here. All the discussion at the 'Super Demo World: The Legend Continues' got me thinking of other hacks which might be good enough to do a TAS for. This one immediately came to mind. It's one of those hacks which changes nearly everything, leaving virtually nothing of the original game behind. Well, perhaps it's not THAT altered, but it is nearly a completely different game using Mario 3's engine. And even the game's engine was modified quite a bit. I could explain it all, but the page does that. There are new power-ups, new items, new enemies, even random weather-effects for the levels. Basically: You have access to the first 7 worlds right away. In one level in each of the worlds is a hidden key. In order to unlock world 8, you have to find they key in each world, and beat the Koopa kid as well. There's no warping past worlds, you have to do all 7. But you needn't finish all the levels in each world. When you beat a Koopa Kid, you get a hint as to where the key is located for that specific world. Luckily you can reenter any world and any level. But for a TAS that wouldn't be necessary. World 8 is divided up into a level based on each world, at the end of which you have to fight Bowser, and he gets harder and harder each time. Myself, I played the hack when it first came out, found all the keys, and got to World 8, but I could never get past 8-7. This is certainly a hack worth thinking about, though it's up to the admin as to whether or not it would be an officially accepted one, like TLC.

That's very fine looking hack and I agree that it could be TASworth but everyone should play it through themselves to fully understand the TAS. And i believe that many of us may have played enough SMB3 to play some hack through. Although this has woken up my interest and I'm surely gonna play it for a while ;)

From the outside, it looks like it'd be a sweet time-attack. I'd have to play it if I can either find a place to download the ROM already patched or just find a patcher that works in XP that's not going to confuse me. (I only used like, one patcher, a LONG time ago.)

Ah yes, I forgot, the main site for the hack hasn't been updated since its release. I got the patch off of Zophar's Domain, or Google is good too. Yes, at any rate, this could be a very interesting TAS to make, if someone were interested. There's also a Nesten movie on the site itself (That link DOES work) which plays through the first world, and shows the location of the key. It's just a normal movie, but it might be enough to get a potential TAS-er started. I'll have to replay the game myself shortly. I found all the keys on my first playthrough, but I've forgotten since then. And, not to mention, that one would need to know the location of the keys FIRST, since that would have to be taken into account in planning. Item storage also allows for many more options than the usual SMB3, so this TAS would be very tricky to even plan.

Is it just be or are the weather effects extremely annoying? I think the guy put them in there just to see if he could.

I thought they were interesting, myself, but they have no practical application in a TAS. In normal play the snow and the rain can reveal the location of a hidden block, that's about it. Snowy levels, though, make everything slick and icy, so it's just to make things interesting, I guess.

Okay now this is what I don't like about hacks: they aren't thought through. I just played through the the seven worlds and got the keys, only to notice that in the end there was one lock still unopened. I hadn't used the keys as soon as I had gotten them, and I realized that one key must've been replaced by some other item in my inventory, because it was full. I tried to get all the keys again, but the game is so "smart" that it prevents me from getting the same key twice, even though I haven't ever used that key on the lock. So now if I want to get to world 8 I have to play through the entire game again. YAY! Does anyone have a savestate so that I don't have to go through the trouble?

The game's site has a list of cheat codes you can use. ie: Not game genie codes, but codes he programmed into the game. There's one that unlocks all the locks and opens World 8. I'm not sure if it'll work on your current game, or if you have to start with a clean slate for it to work. Hopefully you can use it and still keep your items. I admit, the key thing is a bit of an oversight. Personally I used the keys on the locks as soon as I got em, and regularly used items so my list never filled up. At least if someone attempts a TAS of it, all that can be planned out. Let me know if you get through 8-7, that world still has me stumped.

Thanks for the tip! It worked fine and I got to keep my items as well. On to World 8 then!

Doublepost so that SpoonyBard sees the new message: I got through 8-7. Seems to me that you only need to collect all the coins except for the 3 behind the blue wall and the 3 that are in the starboxes. The door appears at the beginning. I think I had also killed all the enemies, but I don't know if that makes any difference.

Awesome, that worked. I never thought to just leave those 6 coins be. I got through it without killing all the enemies, so I guess just getting the coins is necessary.

I liked this hack so much that I did a little run of World 1 which you can find here. The run isn't that high quality and I only did it for fun, but I might continue it later.

This is a very cool hack and I look forward to whatever eventually happens with it. ;)

It's a nice start, Krysimis, I especially like your using the shell/ice block on Boom-Boom in the first two worlds. It could stand to be tweaked a bit, but otherwise there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with your method. Save one thing, I guess it's one other little glitch with the hack. When you get the key you exit the room to fast. You'd notice on the item menu on the overworld that the key doesn't appear in your list. You have to wait for the key to completely stop blinking and disappear first befor exiting the room. You can tell for sure when you exit the pipe, if the first little key icon on the status bar is lit-up then you did it right. On your movie it's still empty when you exit and the key isn't in the items list on the overworld.

Aww I didn't notice that. This means that since the cheat code requires resetting, I have to redo the last two levels and part of the one with the key.

Okay, new version here. It's actually slower than the previous one because it snowed in one level where it had been sunny before.
