awesome RBO WIP! SVN would be more useful with emulators that use textual movie files. diff's don't work so well on binary files :(

Well if someone is willing to get this organized, let me know. The route change I had in mind would mean large chunks of the existing run would need to be redone, so we need some really dedicated runners. Spoof and I had just started re-doing the necessary parts when he left.
They're off to find the hero of the day...

I don't suppose any Super Metroid masters would know how to go about doing this? I think the main difficulty would be loading a given room's data without actually manually going through a door in-game. Then again, I know next to nothing about how Super Metroid actually works. I can program, though I've not done any TAS-oriented scripting; if someone wanted to tell me the appropriate bits of memory to poke/invoke/etc., I could probably sort out the surrounding infrastructure without too much difficulty.

The Super Metroid level editor (SMILE) has a feature that dumps level maps of whole areas already. And maps of this game have already been done anyways (this one for example)

Oh, fantastic! Thanks, that makes things much easier. :) Someone should upload that map to vgmaps.com. Someone who can legitimately claim credit for having generated the map, I mean.

Here is (or will soon be) a comparison between the new wip and Namespoofer's previous RBO, as well as Kriole's non-glitched any%: Link to video The changes show up quite clearly. Note: In-game frames were used for timing here.

Apparently, it' s possible to do the green gate glitch from a dead stop. Link to video I'm tentatively excited about the possibilities of this; if it works the way it looks like it works, then the dream of entering Maridia via the escape route may finally become reality. Topic on GameFAQs I got the video from: hyperlinked to avoid page stretching.

It's not "from a dead stop", because Samus is still moving towards the gate prior to releasing the missile. The mechanics behind this are the same as usual (the missile spawning point is being shifted forward by the horizontal velocity), the point of this video is to show how to make it easier unassisted.

And to further elaborate, because the mechanics are the same, the right-facing super-missile switch on gates are still out of range of super missiles. In other words, we still aren't yet able to hit the Maridia gate from the right (and I don't know how that will ever happen at this point).

I remember a while ago there was a fake japanese video of someone opening the Maridia gate. Personally, I think that's the closest you'll ever get without the discovery of a new trick. Short of looping the super missile to the other side of the screen, or finding a way to keep horizontal speed after unmorphing, it's impossible. Speaking of that, has anyone tried it with springball?

I remember trying it with a Springball, no dice. Apparently it doesn't introduce a significant enough change to the process behind opening the door from the wrong side.

Whats up guys? For those who don't know my brother (Sunffit86) and I are planning a Super Metroid 100% Speed Run for SDA. I wanted to pop by and say thanks for all the effort you guys put in to your TAS's. Not only were they very entertaining but, they helped us plan our room strategies for our console runs. Thank you all for your hard work and hopefully when the run is finished you will be entertained as well. I also have a few questions as well. For instance the RBO TAS. Has anybody been working on Hero and Spoofer's masterpiece at all? I've been waiting with great anticipation for its completion. Also from what I saw on Kroile's You-Tube page, that he was dabbling with a 100% RBO. Is anyone planning on taking this up? Since I'm new to these forums I was also wondering how do I post .smv files? Cause my brother has a little teaser of his own that I wanted to post about what we plan on doing for out console runs.

Lo, and welcome to tasvideos, enjoy your stay, and good luck on that 100% run. I don't really know wether someone is working on an RBO run. Kriole is still around, so you could asking him about that personally. For posting any movie input files, you can use Microstorage. Hope I helped

Thanks scrimpeh, I really appreciate it. BTW an interesting Glitch has been found by JAM on the M2K2 forums. If you jump in the Golden Torizo's room and hold A,X,Y + B through the door transition it will give you 100 Missiles, 20 Super Missiles, 20 Power Bombs, 700 energy, 3 full Reserve Tanks and all the items in the game except for the Screw Attack. Also its best to equip your missiles so you don't crash the game because it automatically equips all your Beams. So after you can just start and unequip the Spazer. Also it works for both entry points of the room.

Wow, thanks for the information! Here is a link to the thread on metroid2002, by the way: http://m2k2.taigaforum.com/post/glitch_topic_701.html The glitch finder thinks this is a debug code, and not a glitch, though, and the effect seems a bit too neat to have been caused by a programming error.

Wat Well that's... interesting. It could certainly be used to do a faster any% run. Skipping pretty much everything and going straight to Kraid, getting varia, one PB and enough E-tanks to break in to LN (2-3?), then rofling all the way through the rest of the bosses skipping everything in your way. But even though this is obviously not a glitch I don't know how much I would agree with using this in a normal any% run, and a glitched one is of course still faster if done in the old fashioned way. Using it for a 100% run would be even sillier as you could get the game to say you have 100% without actually having collected everything. It'd still be interesting to see it used in a run though.

I'm inclined to agree that this sounds like a debug code, not a glitch. Still, very interesting that it's been found after all this time.

Well, I think that a "Push Button, I win Everything" situation really isn't that interesting. If anything, the changes this would make to the route would be interesting, but given it's probably a debug code, it won't be allowed anyway.

Legitimate "any%" or not, I *have* to see this :)

I just finished a run on my SNES using this code. While it did make my run considerably shorter (I've never been able to get a sub 2-hour run myself, certainly not with a final collection rate of 93%), it does cheapen the run a bit. Some words of advice to anyone who does use this trick: 1: I was able to get up to the trick with just 3 extra tanks, although the route I took (Spore Spawn->Kraid->Phantoon->Gold Torizo) did cut things close with a couple of the battles, particularly Phantoon. Overall, not much problem for a TAS, I'm sure. 2: If you skip Dreygon and the Space Jump, you will need to come in the back door. And if you do, Don't be tempted to grab the Screw Attack before you do the trick. It will go away, leaving you without it for the rest of the run. (Yes, this is from personal stupi--Erm, I mean experience...) Overall, while it was cool to see that it worked, there's not that much to be gained by it, except maybe an Over-100% run done without the time warp beam glitch. (Whatever it's called.)

So, is this Zero Mission built in the engine of Super Metroid, or some sort of blending of the two? Also, is it a remake of either or does it have entirely new maps?
