I tried the one on left of that one too, Metroid Limit, but it was impossible for me to complete without savestates and slowdown. It's not really a good modification, new games is always fun to play, but there was to many ways to die and make a wrong turn and not being able to get back.

Did the patch work OK for you, though? With the exception of Metroid Legacy, I get "bad checksum" notices from snes9x for all the Metroid variants on that page.

I havn't thought about that, but can't you play a game with bad checksum anyway?

You can, but it's not good form. A good patch should change the checksum to match the new value so you can tell if the patch was successful or not.
TASing or playing back a DOS game? Make sure your files match the archive at RGB Classic Games.

I actually posted that website in IRC a while back. I have only tried Legacy and Limit so far, and they are both very good. I don't have the same problem with Limit as you do, it IS very hard (especially the bosses. WOW), but it is still very possible. I also haven't found anywhere that I haven't been able to get out of once I get in. I've actually managed to sequence break the game too, however it wouldn't actually save time and I had to use savestates to do it (I kept dieing because you need to walljump on spikes with extremely tight timing, and at first thought I was stuck)

Well, I'm not very good at video games. Especially when it comes to playing with a keyboard, since I don't have any kind of gamepad to play with.

I really liked how you escaped the room after the first missile pack in your Legacy movie,Graveworm. I would love to see a complete TAS for Legacy, even if it wouldn't go on this site and would like to help with route planning and stuff, because I know quite much about the hack. A TAS of Limit would be very nice, too, but I haven't played all the way through it,so I probably can't judge it yet. This discussion should probably go in another topic though. And Saturn,I can't wait until you finish your RBO run! Hope it won't take too long.

Saturn: I'm not sure if you've mentioned it yet, but will you be getting the grappling beam? It seems like it might give you better mobility in several of the water rooms (making up for the lack of Gravity Suit), although I'm not sure if the detour would end up being worthwhile, or if there's a silly rule in the game like, "You can't use the grappling beam underwater without the gravity suit." Even if you did get the grappling beam, it would still be faster just to pepper the boss with super missiles than to use the grapple trick, correct? (ie. Water doesn't slow down your rate of fire--or does it?)

I really work on the run, but Brinstar has very tricky parts which require much more testing than usual therefore the progress is slower.

I'm not taking the Grapple Beam because in my RBO run I'm not allowed to fight mini-bosses at all (except unavoidable), this is my general rule for this run. I also think I will still save some time not fighting Crocomire at the end as it would take more time beating him than passing Maridia without Grapple using the best speed tricks there. Water doesn't slow anything down except the movements of Samus so I could use the Grapple Beam without Gravity Suit too and the Fire-Rate would be the same. I'm not sure if the Grapple kill on Draygon would be slower than Super Missiles if executing correctly. This needs to be tested to know the exact result for both variations. However I can't use any of this methods in the RBO run because I will have to use another Crystal Flash in order to get a Blue Suit which allows me to super jump out of the vertical room just before Draygon. There is no other way to get out of this room, so without this glitch a RBO run wouldn't even be possible at all.

I just have to say that (not to stress or rush by any means) the RBO of Super Metroid will probably be my favorite movie here so far.

How can you get a blue suit with a crystal flash? I thought it was gotten by speed-jumping into Draygon when his energy is low enough to kill him that way.

Unfortunately I can't get a speed-jump in water without Gravity Suit so there is no other way except Crystal Flash. You have to activate a Ice-Shield (with help of a power bomb and the Ice Beam only) and then imediately make a Crystal Flash. Now if Draygon gets killed by the Ice-Shield during the Crystal Flash animation you get a Blue Suit which allows you a free charge at any time. This special glitch works only on Draygon because he is the only boss who cancels Samus' position to "standing" after he gets killed which somehow affects a byte that causes this glitch to work. Here a post from Metroid2002 of Kejardon, the glitch-master of Super Metroid about this glitch:
Kejardon wrote:
Crystal Flash uses a certain byte in data to check which frame of the crystal flash animation to display. Coincidentally, this same byte is used as a counter to see if Samus can super jump. If the crystal flash is aborted in the middle, the byte will be left at some non-zero value, and the game will think that Samus still has time to super jump. But because Samus never properly charged for a super jump, the timer isn't decreased every frame as it normally is. There are two ways to cause the Crystal Flash to stop. The first is to let Draygon hit you with gunk, then pick you up. Be careful not to use the super jump after getting out of Draygon's grasp, though. The second way is to kill Draygon *while* doing a crystal flash. The crystal flash can't kill Draygon, and you can't do anything during the crystal flash to kill Draygon, so you have to set up a beam shield before crystal flashing to kill Draygon. Crystal Flash doesn't (directly) get Samus blue suit. It only gets an unlimited time, single use Super Jump. But since you can do a Super Jump underwater, you can use that super jump to kill Draygon and get a blue suit.

If you know any sequence breaks or tricks that'll help me complete the game faster, I might play all the way to the end, and if it's cool enough, I might do a serious playthrough of this game, even though it wouldn't be submitted, people could still find it here on the discussion forums. Send me a private message if you've found any cool stuff, and I'll need some help with route planning too, I've completed this game twice, so I have a little bit of route planned, but not for the whole game, and it could certainly be faster. :) I've done a little more on the video, the reason I didn't one round spore spawn is because that would require planning with drops, and I wasn't in the mood for that at that time, and I wouldn't have one rounded it if I did the battle now either, but if I make a serious movie, I promise to do it. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/760/

Can someone do a vid of this Crystal Flash/Blue Suit glitch to illustrate it? I'm keen to see it

Anyone else have trouble applying the Metroid Legacy patch? I'm using the regular JU rom, and the IPS applies successfully....but I get a bad checksum and the game goes blank as soon as it gets into the game itself.

The link you gave to the Metroid Legacy site isn't working for me. I keep getting the '404: Page Not Found' error.
Guybrush: "I'm selling these fine leather jackets." Wally: "Really?" Guybrush: "No. I 'm lying." Wally: "In that case, I don't want one!" Currently working on: Nothing at the moment.

You need to remove the trailing period from the URL.

Huh? I see the word "Terimakasih" on that page. How's Terima connected with that?

I actually edited the period away. <-- Grammatik. (På engelska?) http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/762/ I had to try the crystal flash glitch, and if anyone wanted to see it, it's here. Though I'm not killing the boss but rather get caught, which leaves me with the goo still on me after he's released me, for some reason.

Graveworm - Grammar = grammatik. ;) http://www-lexikon.nada.kth.se/skolverket/sve-eng.shtml Very good online dictionary if you need to quickly convert a swedish or english word into one another. :D

There are a few other hacks on that page as well. Have you compared the other hacks? How Legacy compares to them?
No answers to this question? Because I'm trying to make a decision whether we could accept Legacy as an allowed hack.
