Well, I just tested and found out that the Shinespark to Draygon's lair can be performed without the high jump boots. Using the gravity jump like saturn suggested worked well enough. Interestingly I was never that into SM in general. But after seeing your wip and some of the avi demos of the RBO, I'm enjoying it. the any% has been out of date, and as JXQ said your sloppy test run was faster than the current run. keep up the good work!

I know you aren't near Kraid yet, but I thought throw out these possible damage boost time savers. You could use lower spikes as well, but if you don't have enough health for any of these boosts this is meaningless.

I'm in green Brinstar! This happifies me because now the run gets a lot more fun to TAS. I've only gained 98 frames so far, but that number should start increasing at a more rapid rate pretty soon. I won't be releasing progress this time around since there isn't nearly as much new stuff to see. I mostly just wanted to let everyone know that I have actually started, since I put this run off for a few weeks longer than I intended. I'm aiming to complete the run sometime in April or May.

Thanks Orgeslayer, I will look into that when I get to kraid. As for the progress of my run, I have just eliminated phantoon. Unfortunately he did not drop items like I wanted him to and I ended up losing a couple seconds having to fire at his blue flames for missles. I still killed him in 2 rounds though. I am now pretty confident that phantoon can be 1 rounded with just 3 missile packs, not 4 like some have suggested. I decided I will not be posting any more smv's on the forum, because I want people to be surprised when the run is finished. I expect it to be complete within 2 weeks as long as I don't hit anymore roadblocks (phantoon took me way longer than it should have).

Almost 100 frames at Brinstar is already impressive, JXQ! How many ingame frames could you gain on the Torizo fight if comparing from the Bomb-pickup till the exit of the room after the fight? Looking very much forward to see this run. Good luck for the next parts! Tonski: I put RBO on hold for now, and also work on a (somewhat different in route than hero) any% run currently. Almost at Botwoon by now.

Great news, hero! Aiming to be done in just 2 weeks sounds too fast for me. But if you think to being able to optimize all the difficult and much in require to test parts in that time, then respect. Regarding Phantoon, I knew there was a possibility to 1-round him with 3 packs, by manipulating the refills right on the way of the Missile wave you do, but this would be too risky for me. Also doing so I think you will have to slow down some frames in the fight anyway, so geting the Missiles (if not caring about real-time) wouldn't delay the run too much anyway, and the 5 more Missiles can still be of use in the rest of the run, I think. Also I want to note, after recent tests, I noticed that you will have big problems passing the vertical Pirate room in Lower Norfair without HJ-Boots. Walljumping will require some delay to manipulate the Pirates out of the way, and a direct jump won't be high enough to lay down the Power Bomb. Because of this one room, I think it's out of question to get HJ Boots, at least if not aiming for realtime. You should really test this room yourself to be sure. Other than that, good luck for the next quests. Looking very much forward to see this run!

38. I could have gotten one more on the exit via subpixel but it only gave me 2 missiles instead of 5.

I think I saved 10 frames on the exit alone by geting all the Missile refills during the fight so I could skip the exit refill-slowdowns there. Other than that I just manipulated him to throw refills as soon as possible and shot him on the first possible frames all the time. Thats all. :-) To be honest, I'm also bit surprised about the difference, if you did everything else perfect as well...

Do you mean that not having the boss spawn any items after dying makes the door able to be opened earlier? Because even with getting refills, I only lost one frame exiting that door. Torizo also jumped backward before spewing refills, is that jump somehow avoidable? Though that would save another second at least. I dunno.

Hmmm, no, as far as I know the door always starts to the same time to blink, no matter if he throws refills or not at the end. And no, the backward jump of Torizo before the refill throw isn't avoidable in any way. Maybe the delay of it can be shortened a bit though, but I don't know. The difference is indeed strange, maybe you should review the fight one more time for mistakes you probably didn't notice at first? I can't think of a better solution currently...

Well for the vertical shaft with the golden space pirates, I am going to use a similar strategy that Teri uses in his 14% run. I realize it looks slow and sloppy, but it will certainly lead to a lower movie length if I skip the boots. However, I am fairly sure I will be collecting the space jump for the voyage from mardia to tourian. Also, I made a good amount of progress today, I just finished killing kraid. I am almost a full minute ahead of the 14% run which uses an identical route except for the fact that I collected the spazer, which made the gain slightly less than it would have been had I not collected it. While the run is pretty tightly optimized, I am sure there are many little things I am overlooking. There might be enough tiny errors to warrant a second version when this one is submitted. My main goal right now is to get a time that is lower than 40 minutes in real time. This may not be likely to happen, but that goal keeps me very motivated :)

Not really. This is the timeline of events: 2005 — Michael Flatley has started his 100% TAS (abandoned it later); 2005 — Saturn has started an any% TAS, later turned into the RBO; 2006 — JXQ has started (and finished) his version of the 100% TAS; 2006 — Saturn has started working on a new any% in addition to the RBO; 2007 — JXQ has started 100% v2; 2007 — Hero of the day has started his version of the any% (note that Saturn is still working on his runs).
