I was about to dismiss that as not being possible, but I actually manage to get that to work! very nice find Tonski. I bounced samus a few times before reaching the edge, which I assume is the only way to make the jump possible. I just hope that JXQ also discovered this when he got to this point, it is a decent time saver. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4404/cool.smv

It can be done to a certain extent, otherwise there's not enough speed. The reason it's useless, though, is different: the only possible run that gets Screw Attack is the 100%, and you'd have Springball at that point, so you wouldn't need much speed to clear that gap, anyway. EDIT: LOL, I just realized JXQ didn't use Springball there in his run, even though it was kinda obvious. :D

moozooh, he did use the springball in that little test of his. I then produced a successful movie showing the same thing but actually clearing the gap with the springball. JXQ doesn't do that in the published run. I am guessing he knew about it though for his v2 run. You bumped away my last post btw, on page 57 I posted a movie.

That means I actually found something useful? Awesome! I just hope JXQ gets this trick in his knowledge soon enough to use it in his run v2. It feels good to find something. :) Moozooh: Didn't hero of the day just post it done without damage from that ball? And yes, I actually thought this as a trick to 100% run, because it's the only run where you have SA and spring ball at that point. (as you said?)

Hero of the day: indeed, seems like you submitted your post while I was still typing mine. >_> Actually, mock-springballing through morphball tunnels isn't anything new, and it wasn't anything new even at the time of producing 100% v1 (see catnap222's Metroid Legacy run for reference). JXQ is (or at least should be) well aware of this trick, and he most likely didn't use it back then due to inattentiveness. Also, I didn't even realize Tonski was using Springball in his attempt as well (due to my own inattentiveness), that's why I didn't use it in my version. >_>

Yeah bumping this thread. I just watched JXQ's 100% v2 and it was one of the best runs I've ever seen. Not only was it fast but the level of entertainment was very high too. A lot of new stuff too. I just really enjoyed watching that run all the way. But I thought of another timesaver possibly for any%-run. I'll post smv but because I suck so badly I can't charge the shinespark there myself. :) The idea is that there's shinespark before Gravity, so why not after too. Like if after getting the gravity suit you'd charge the shinespark, get out of the door and on the wanted height spark left out from that whole WS area. Maybe if you fire a super missile or charged beam or something you could even open that door leading to the lake before WS and shinespark through that too? I'm not all that sure, but here's what I was thinking of: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4491/timesavermaybe.smv Good? Bad? Possible?

I think it is possible, but none of the current any% runs take Speed Booster before Wrecked Ship. I'll test it now. EDIT: Test #1 — failed. In the best case, the missile hits the door, and I bump into it (as shown in the demo), in the worst, the door doesn't even have a chance to load before the missile reaches it, so it either vanishes or explodes inside it.

By the way, what do you do when a new TAS is released? Do you go over your own speedrun again and try to implement the new moves?

What about a Super?

The problem was that a regular missile flies too fast. Super flies about twice as fast, so you can figure it out.

Here is a *much* more optimal phantoon fight using just 2 missle packs. I managed to kill him without leaving the screen at all. According to my rough estimates, a 2 pack kill is about 80 frames longer than a 3 pack kill. The amount of time spent jumping over the wave beam missle pack is 70 frames, and the time spent collecting the charge beam missle pack is 27 frames. This 2 missle pack strategy will most likely be the one I use in my run. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4585/2pack.smv

Very good job hero, this is a amazing strategy! I also think the 2-pack Phantoon route will be slightly faster in the end that way. Good luck on it.

It's "missile". I don't understand why so many people make that mistake, it has never been spelled without an i. Also, I'll say it here, I loved JXQ's 100%.

But missile can be pronounced like that (personally, I pronounce it that way specifically because it's ridiculous to actually say it that way). Miss-I'll. Hassle doesn't have that luxury. Hass-I'll? I don't think so.

Thanks Saturn! kennyman, There is some sort of historical context to the spelling of missle. I forget where I saw it, but it seemed to be correct for this game. Obviously I know how to spell it correctly. I use firefox which has a built in spell check, and there is a red dotted line under missle ;)

i pronounce it /mIsail/. <missle> is meant to represent /mIsl/, and thus strikes me as american.

The point of missle is to miss its target! Abulutly!™

This is mostly for moozooh, since I doubt he has gotten to this point in his low% run yet. This is a method of continuous walljumping in the old mother brain room. It saves at least 6 frames over the traditional method, maybe more. Unfortunately I am too far past this point to implement it into my new any% run, unless I manage to hex it in without a desync. This isn't like a regular continuous walljump because it requires that you press the X, L, or R button after the walljump to continue Samus' momentum and still land as early as possible on the next platform. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4657/jumps.smv Pretty soon I will post a package of little tech demos that I have collected. Most of them are tiny improvements to JXQ's 100% route, but maybe they can be useful elsewhere too.

didn't JXQ use the forward walljump in his 100% v2, in the long lava room between norfair elevator and speed booster?

he did. I just realized that the somersault could be canceled by pressing X, L, or R, which also keeps the momentum intact. There is another useful application for this too Tub, I will use it in my new any% run to cross over the crateria missle lake without having to bomb jump.

evilchen, It has to do with the height of your jump and samus' running speed before she begins the jump. Generally it has a better chance of working if you jump higher and run slower. here is how to jump over the missle pack in the wave beam area

yeah ok the heights maybe wrong didnt know that its the height to the tests, do you think its possible what i wanted to do? when i need to run slower i guess not :/!
