Actually I think auto-scrolling games don't suit for speedrun. But the WIP looks much better, level 2 goes quite smooth although there is still some lag. I hope your run will be wonderful as morimoto's NES version, good luck Cpadolf. No one like Parodius games? Which are more interesting than Gradius.

IIRC Parodius games offer less artistic freedom for TASers, although they are more artistic by themselves. On the other hand, Deign had a Pop'n TwinBee WIP that had good entertainmnet potential with its bell juggling. Because theoretically, you can juggle them constantly without ever picking them in a TAS, spamming the entire screen with bells. :)

Where can said WIP be retrieved? (twinbee for silly heads who don't know which WIP I'm referring to)

Bleh, I'm bored. So I'll put up one last WIP. This ends right at the 4th boss and I'm 4400+ frames ahead of the old run at this point. (mah gawd!!) The 3rd level sucked to TAS, both the volcano part and the sandwall part was very boring to work on. (hence the small progress since the last WIP relative to the time taken to make it) Also at this point I have by far exceeded the last movie in % of kills, krocketneo missed a lot of the rings those easter island statues shot and they do give points so I aimed to get all, (and did) also I got more of the volcano stones (in fact I only missed one and due to where it spawns it is actually impossible to kill as you can't shot things on the far right of the screen. I still have a lot less points though but that is because I kill enemies that spawn other enemies faster I think. Also it might look like I miss some things in level 4 but that is only visual confusion from the scrolling screen, I'm quite sure nothing escapes the left side of the screen. I predict the final gain to be ~10000 frames, maybe even more since I think I can end the input like 1000 frames sooner than he did. Click EDIT: Also I didn't turn on sync samples with CPU sound, that fucks up my computer and the game hangs almost instantly. If I remember I'll add it in to the last rerecord before finishing the movie.

Great WIP! It is really nice that you are really active in the run but it would be slightly better if you did not move that much :) But its your run and my eyes are most probably too old to follow the progress of young TASers like you :)

Nah, Angerfist, the moving around kinda hurts my eyes too. :( But it's no big deal. And other than that this run is looking pretty impressive. Even though you've pretty much stuck with just the laser, the movie was still pretty entertaining. Keep it up!

I liked the flight patterns you followed between 40000—42000 the most. It's easier to track movements when they don't cover too much of the screen, and the silhouettes become more fluid as well. Oh, and don't forget to write something!

Hey I was looking around for a game to make my first TAS submission with and Gradius caught my eye, because TASed arcade games are very entertaining for me at least. I started TASing it and came up with this WIP . Hope you guys enjoy it because I am thinking of taking a crack at beating the current published run. Also feedback/comments would be appreciated. :)

I think it looks really smooth, entertainment was done well. However at this point you are 42 frames slower than me, and while I know they don't obsolete these kind of runs based solely on time differences I doubt they will publish a slower movie. I think you should try again though, and try to keep an eye on my run to not fall behind and to try to save time. And here is a extremely helpful lua script for the game (can be run on snes9x Improvement 12) which I only had for the last 2 levels, it will help you greatly if you use it.

Thank you, I tried to make it as entertaining as possible. Unfortunately watching the movie again, I think thats what caused the slow down. I didn't realize while making it that shooting the charged up ball at the dragon causes lag. I watched your movie, and should probably do like you did and take it to the dragon. Also thanks for the script it is really helpful with those pesky dragons/airbase thingies EDIT: Or is the lag actually caused by how long the dragon is alive?

Yay I think I might actually make some headway. My updated WIP saves 31 frames so far. 7 from the menu, 8 from lag reduction, and 16 from the boss fight. It wasn't easy by any means however, this part was already tightly optimized. I dont think I could have without the amazing script. Thank you Cpadolf.

Was it 31 frames over your or over my run?

Over yours. Also do you know how or where I would go to learn how to add the power of the charged up E. Laser to the script if I already know the addresses?

I think all you need to do is add the following line: (before the snes9x.frameadvance() line)
gui.text(0,206,string.format("Power=%0[minimum number of digits]d", memory.readword([your address])))
Replace [minimum number of digits] with the number of digits you want the number to be displayed in (so if the value is in a range of 000-255 you would want to use "Power=%03d" here) Replace [your address] with the address you found (don't forget the 0x at the front if it's not already there) This is assuming the power is stored in a single address.

ah thank you Also Cpadolf, since basically all improvements in this run will come from lag reduction, I was wondering what method did you find helped reduce lag the most? As far as I can tell its to reduce the amount of enemies/projectiles on the screen at a minimum and kill the bigger enemies as fast as possible and I dont think ship movements ever cause lag but I could be wrong

Ship movements don't cause lag, but charging E-laser does.

New WIP is up. Feel Free to make comments/suggestions. This level is one of the most laggy and seems like one of the most annoying because they are everywhere, and the lua script doesn't display the health correctly most of the time. However after extraordinary effort, and hours of attempting different strategies, I saved 154 frames in this segment. Total savings: 185 frames

Does it just fall behind, or is it completely off?

The value that it displays is off, like the little bubbles have 1 health but it displays two, the big bubbles have different health then is shown too but I am not sure by how much.

Well I was on vacation so I just got back to this (not like anyone is jumping to see the run finished anyway) What I wanted to know was what counts as a 100% kills run, killing all destroyable objects or killing all enemies?

I aimed to destroy everything destroyable (with the exception of the rocks falling after the level 4 boss, it was impossible to take all of them so I skipped shooting them since that looked cleaner) so I guess you should do that to for consistency.

Did the two drones at ~146xx fly offscreen unscathed? An idea to consider: instead of flying around [semi-]randomly, try associating your motion patterns with music. Faster movements when the tempo rises, and vice versa; change directions to the rhythm, etc.

Almost but no, I let them get almost free and clear because I couldnt find a way to kill them sooner that would not exacerbate the horrible lag in this segment and thought it would look cool to have a near miss. Also the music thing is a good idea but it would be difficult to implement seeing as how theres never more than 10 seconds of time to spare except for after bosses and the music tempo doesnt change enough during these times.

What if you shoot without interrupting your movement?
