Thought I'd just spring the idea. I fooled around with some plugins to see if it was actually emulatable, and it seems it is. Jabo's 1.5.2 and Rice's 6.1.1 emulated it the best, however when swinging, at least my computer drops the game's FPS down to ~10. Maybe tweaking some settings will make it better runable? I don't even know if this is just because my computer sucks (which it does) or if the game just isn't compatible. Would it even make a good run? When I asked this in IRC I had a reply of "If you make incredible shots and hole-in-ones, I'd definitely watch it". What kind of manipulation would be taken into account? Well, as far as I understand it's the wind (if it even is manipulatable?). In my opinion hitting the perfect shots with just enough power to pot the ball would look real great and make a good run. Your opinions? P.S: I'm not saying I'm running this... Yet.

I played around with this game just to get a feel for the frame advance and such for mupen. I found the following things:
  • It takes alot of time to optimize with aiming. The game on the TAS level will be more like a strategy/puzzle game IMO :)
  • Its possible to manipulate the wind behind you before starting the course (and as such score WAY under par/hole in one.)
  • It COULD get repetitive (I didn't stick with it long enough to find out) without hole in ones.
If you do take this up (or anyone else except for CF) I'll be happy to watch it and give any critique/suggestions.

I don't know if it's the same thing that Mario GOlf on the GameCube, but if you can do super boost, and the contrary, i bet you can do awesome shot that look amazing.

I'd encourage this run be made. There's no reason that golf games shouldn't be TASed imo. I'd enjoy watching progress also.

I'm not sure this game is very good to do you start off with weak characters who can barely reach the greens in Par and the fairways are very wide open, this might be a tricky game to differenciate between normal play. Personally I think these games should completed without the need to putt.

This can be solved by manipulating the wind to be always behind you.

I thought a while back of doing a mini-golf run. I've done a fair bit of testing, and have scored a hole in one on every single hole except #17 on Peach's Dream. Which really sucked, because it was the second course I tested (of two). I had just bet a friend that I could hole-in-one every mini-golf hole. Sigh. But still, it would be very interesting to watch those constant holes-in-one until that one hole. About a real-course TAS: Interesting. I abandoned the thought because of difficulty, but it deserves looking at. In theory, even par 5s could be done in 2 shots (1 to get close, 1 to hit it in). However, with a weak hitter like Yoshi or whoever you start with, it might not be possible. So, I suggest this submission use cheats. Recall the Zanac submission[/ur] where cheats were used for entertainment. Miscellaneous: I'd like to point out that it would be best to get the ball in some way to not roll far. Maybe put it up hill, or in the rough if it doesn't cost a shot. A Mini Golf run would obviously not cheat, as they all put the same, but the character chosen should have the shortest after-hole-in-one animation.

Watching 50 or whatever hole in ones would be really boring, IMO. I don't think this game is suitable for tas.

When In Doubt, wait for Work In Progress. (I always wait for a short tool assisted demonstration before saying 'oh snap, bad game choice.')

I'd love to see someone make a TAS of this game. I think the run should start from a savestate and complete the tournaments with metal mario... that would be cool :)

Using cheats to get the strongest characters would probally be the best option, since it would allow much more creativity on the shots and could allow for certain things like an incompetent drive followed by an eagle 2.

Speedgolf might also be cool. If a ball needs to travel long in the air to make a hole in one, it might even be faster for speed golf to shoot the first shot in the rough... might be interesting.

I doubt it, given the several seconds need between shots (especially high-power ones).

Check out this thread for a WIP I made of the NES Mario themed Golf game. It plays two courses and gets a perfect score on them both. Since the amount of shots seems predictable per hole (1 for short ones, 2 for longer ones), I tried to mix things up with some trick shots, near-misses and lots of unusual ball movement. Maybe, it can give some ideas to anyone who wants to try a TAS of this game.

I've actually been sitting on this idea for quite a while, I think it'd make a good addition (especially the Speed Golf mode). I would suggest that a basic guideline would be to keep the ball low and keep it in the rough, but I'm sure you could work that much out.

I would actually prefer a run that covers both minigolf courses, as they would be hole-in-one frenzies.

The trouble with that sort of run is that it give viewers the impression (YouTubers) that the video was simply a string of edits put together. Pesonally if such a run is done then the ball should land directly in the hole on each shot. EDIT: After some considertation I think speed golf via using a character obtained through cheats would probally be the best option.

Not really, because the shots would be aimed as fast as possible. So it would be obviously not real shooting, which would take a lot of aiming.

I'm guessing if this run is made all courses shall be done? 18*6 = 108 courses. Hmm, that's quite a bit. EDIT: Speed golf, eh? I guess playing the first course would be the fastest, right? Also I don't really understand how keeping the ball in the rough at most times would increase playing speed.

Because the ball stops instantly when it hits the rough, while if it goes on the fairway it rolls for quite a long time.

Well, when the ball hits the fairway and is no longer bouncing but only rolling, you can hold down Z (I believe it's Z) and the game will "fast-forward" to where the ball will eventually stop.

Hi, Jiruru, welcome to TASvideos. Anyways, that's a good point, but it's more effective only when the ball must stay on the fairway to reach the green in 2 shots, or when it's impossible to hit the rough without very adjusted aim.

This is not true for speedgolf, since you would aim for the lowest amount of time, and the timer also speeds up when you hold Z. I'm not really sure if the different animations of the shot take different amounts of time... but if they do, it might be faster to watch the same, perhaps boring, animation over and over again. I personally like it when you get an overhead view of the ball, and see the real path that it travels (rather than for instance seeing just the ball in the sky). Manipulating this might also take time, which can't be justified. When I think about this, it might be best if the run of this game used a cheat to get metal mario, and then just played tournament, aiming for the lowest amount of shots, and not time. This way, cool stiff like flag shot, or a ball bouncing a lot before it enters the hole might be showed off also.

Right, haha. I'd forgotten that in speed golf, the in-game clock would be more important than the real time clock. (That post kinda sounded sarcastic, but I meant it seriously. Although I hope I didn't open a can of worms by comparing clocks.)

Hi all. Pretty new here, but I've been lurking like forever. So what happened to this game? I would be very interested in seeing this game mastered to perfection. It might be a more entertainment-oriented run than a speed-run if I was to do it. But I really need to know whether or not someone would actually consider watching it, and whether or not a pure entertainment run would fit the concept for this site? I have never made a TAS before, nor do I know how to do one, but I've checked out the FAQ's a couple of times and I'm a quick learner so, yeah... I just recently bought it from the Wii shop, just to get a little of that nostalgic feel - and I can already honestly say that with some luck, one can do all sorts of crazy shots; bouncing the ball off of a tree or cactus and into the hole (I nearly managed to do that just by playing on the console!), doing all kinds of crazy albatross shots, and just generally make it a fun, but in consequence not a speedy, run. Even if most people are opposed to such a run I might just do one afterall - if anyone is interested in seeing the run I will upload it and PM the link. Oh, and sorry for the old bump but I've read that it's better to bump rather than making a brand new topic
