This is an improvement of 1433 frames (23.88 seconds) over the previous submission.
Emulator used - SNES9x 1.43 v9
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Uses warps
  • Probably some other stuff
Improvements
  • Misty Isle 1 - Better running start.
  • Castle #1 - Optimized pipe entry and keep-flight door entry.
  • Crystal Star World - Glitch Yoshi wings for a big improvement. (Don't blink)
  • Sky Star World - Get faster-than-normal flying speed from the cloud.
  • Pipe Star World - Better tactics with keeping flight through pipes.
  • BackDoor Star World - Flying below the ground earlier after getting the key
General lag reduction by actions within the levels and a more optimized score route.
Let's Try Bonus Game
  • Pipe Star World - Yoshi can't normally enter these pipes, but the first two can be entered with Yoshi anyway. Other goofy things happen. If Yoshi could get to the key box, a similar shortcut to Crystal Star World could be used.
  • Bowser Star World - If Yoshi can make it through Pipe Star World, and with a shell in the reserve box, the raft here can be skipped from the beginning. Getting the reserve shell requires a major route change.
  • Backdoor Star World - Using the key to surf the lava underneath the spikes turned out to be a bit slower, but very cool looking.

Bisqwit: Good looking movie, but it comes at least 32 frames short of optimal time as pointed out by Chef Stef et al. Please resubmit when you have fixed the needlessly long delay at 7:21. (I don't know how that is done, but I suppose the resources for figuring that out that are out there.)
Reverting that action due to MAJOR PROTESTING.
I will step away from handling this submission unless someone decides to have it published. (I have already made an AVI.)

The point isn't that what Bisqwit says is law; the point is that this site exists because Bisqwit decided that it should. I think the most effective way to broaden the site or bring in new viewers is to keep up fresh published material, as it is the main goal of the site. So by debating about publications, I am thinking about exactly those things you say that we should. I also think that this particular discussion was handled maturely by all parties involved.

That's a good point - I can see what you mean here. Really, the main issue for me was the harshness of arguments regarding (in my opinion) trivial issues, and the "Bisqwit bashing" going on. But, I'm glad we could discuss this without reaching that level. I appreciate your answers, JXQ, and how you responded to my points in this discussion.

32 frames is very noticable if the time is lost within a short period in a 2D game, still no need to reject, but then again are we just going to see that hexed into the next run and submitted in that case I definitely wouldn't want to see that. So there is a strong point to both sides of the argument. Personally think the next improvement must go beyond the 32 frames in order to justify publishing it. As for the run I haven't watched it but I saw the previous one and would be interested to know whats done differently, but that excessivley long autoscroller pretty much destroys any enjoyment out of the run for me. Yawnsnake.

It's a huge bummer there's no possible way to either a) read the submission text b) watch the actual run If there were, you could find out what has been improved :(

Not to go too much off topic here, but I think you're thinking about Shinryuu. If you watch the submitted run you'll see that I'm one of the authors. :) Although I did do some work on that run, I remember that you and BoMF always beat my times. :P

I, too, am waiting for an AVI before casting my vote. Could someone with the ability to encode a run please do so? Or perhaps Bisqwit could post the avi he said he had already made.

I'm not that huge into SMW/SDW either and I can instantly see even frame improvements. I read the submission text first, so I knew what to look for (you should generally ALWAYS do this), and BAM I saw every improvement they mentioned. Wasn't hard at all. One was so major NOT to miss (the crystal...cave....thingie.) If they say "stage X was improved because of Y" when watching what stage look for Y. Also, you mentioned how Misty Star world was yawnsnake. First, that phrase is always out of place when not coming from JXQ, and second the autoscroller is the one of the cruxes of entertainment in runs of SDW; there's 5 minutes of pure showing off, and it's usually a flurry of movement, glitches, and insane stunts like juggling, avoiding death, etc.

Speaking of Misty Star World, I think it would be neat to make a demonstration of that level only, disregarding lag, power-changing, and other timed stuff, to allow freedom in going crazy and showing oddities in the game. Two things I'm thinking are to bring in a sub-item (cloud?) and maybe use that fireball powerup from Big Boo's Secret.

I agree, that level is a gift for various kinds of playaround. Also, yes vote for major awesomeness.

I wish to apologize to JXQ, Fabian, jimsfriend and skamastaG for the things I said in this thread. Although what I said was based on my misconception that it is a simple thing to improve this movie, the fact is that what I said hurt feelings, and me saying merely that I misunderstood does not remedy the damage. I categorically apologize for: -- treating the players (especially JXQ) as if they don't have any saying to the submission when it is submitted -- implying that the players are redundant and that anyone could do the same. For what it's worth Bisqwit, I think people, including myself, have been needlessly harsh on you. I actually think you handled the judging of this movie quite well, since you changed your mind when you heard the improvement wasn't going to be made. As for the non-judging things, I think we could all stand to be a little more calm and collected sometimes. Thanks for apologizing.

I admit I may have overreacted a bit in my delivery of my points (but I stand by them just as Bisq stands by his) and for that I apologize. It wasn't necessary. I was just so startled by it, that's all. JXQ: I think just leaving and coming back won't help much. Working on helping yourself now is much better a solution.
