Yeah, we've seen plenty of hard Mario hacks already. Super Mario Forever, Kaizo Mario World, Air, etc. However, Hard Relay Mario stands out simply because it's the hardest. I realize that's subjective, but most hardhacks can be completed if not without savestates, then at least in real time. This was ridiculously hard to complete even when TASing it. This hack was created by six prominent SMB hackers, including U1 (who created Air) and Mana. (who once had an SMB run published here). The following changes are made in this hack:
  • The levels, obviously.
  • A new block I "affectionately" refer to as instakill spikes. No matter what state Mario is in (fire, big, small, invincible, whatever), he will die upon touching this block's hitbox, which is about as large as the block itself.
  • The vines are now clouds and every invisible block is marked. These are merely cosmetic changes.
Other than that, the engine is exactly the same. Everything performed in this movie is doable on the real game, should the stage allow for it.
I'm not going to write individual level notes, as there's just too much stuff to go over. However, this run improves over the last one through more precision, elimination of all unnecessary waiting and minimization of all necessary waiting, among other things. As a side effect, these make the run almost a minute shorter. Enjoy.

adelikat: This game may be hard but the result often is less than pleasing (such as waiting for koopas to respawn and walk across the screen). Impossibly hard hacks tend to not go over well with the TAS audience. In addition, we already have Air, which fills the impossibly hard smb hack niche quite sufficiently.
As a result, I must reject this run. Sorry.

It was pretty nice, but there were too many pauses in the action and spots that seemed improvable, which might not be improvable, but were annoying to watch. I'll vote no, sorry.

I enjoyed watching it, so I'll vote yes. I would however like the movie better if you include the extra levels...

While the hack does show better tool-assistance compared to the last one, the hack doesn't really allow for a a good run, for example forcing players to use the turtle glitch is not a great idea unless they need to get through a series of long and complicated obstacles, enough to mimimize the wait. The hack reminds me of the Second Reality Project which isn't paticularly a good thing.

I agree with AKA, except that this hack isn't nearly as interesting to watch as The Second Reality Project was.

The link to the patch in the submission is dead. Can anyone mirror it?

http://smbhacks.110mb.com/ has the ips file. Still seems to sync great with FCEUX 2.0.4-interim.

This run reminds me of IWBTG, but only a little.
