Submission Text Full Submission Page
  • Emulator used: Gens v2.12 Movie 9z (default settings)
  • Played on hardest difficulty
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
I chose this game because it was one of my favourite childhood Genesis games. I didn't own it but borrowed from a friend. Of course I own it now. Also, I wanted to know how fast this could be beaten, of course.
Difficulties were mainly in crowd control. Too many soldiers, explosions or cars in screen or just outside of it causes lag. This was an issue in 2nd, 3rd and 5th missions.
This submission is 25 seconds (2531 frames) faster than my earlier submit which I deleted when I found it was too hastily done.
I found out too late that I lost 2 frames in two first credit screens but couldn't hex-edit them without hurting the future. I hope this does't cause too much trouble to you.
WEAPONS
  • Machine Gun - endless amount of ammunition, shoots in 16 direction
  • Knife - killing an enemy soldier with a Knife gives you either arrows or bombs
  • Exploding Arrows - holding down shooting button charges a more powerful arrow
Frames charged / damage: 0 / 04 - 06 / 06 - 22 / 08 - 30 / 12 - 38 / 13+
  • Timed Bombs - detonates after five seconds. Can't calculate damage since it destroys everything.
MISSION 1 - Destroy a wall and escape
The wall takes 13 damage three times until it explodes.
MISSION 2 - Rescue three secret agents and escape
Only trouble here was lag control when all agents has been rescued. I take curvy route to top to manipulate enemies. This way it had smallest amount of lag.
MISSION 3 - Destroy a wall and escape
In the middle of the map between two rivers I shoot a car with arrow which prevents another car driving just in front of the upper river. In the end both sides of the double wall has to be damaged to one health point until the other can be exploded. Stabbing enemy is ideal because it doesn't take extra time here.
MISSION 4 - Blow up enemy weapons (crates and helicopters) and escape
I have to stop and wait a little (@4:28) so the boxes explode. Last part in helicopter field is place where I improved most in this mission. I found that first helicopter explodes from one well aimed arrow. Used three in my earlier submit.
MISSION 5 - Kill all soldiers coming from wall with 3 gates and escape
Strange looking pathfinding between helicopters is to reduce lag.
MISSION 6 - Rescue Trautman
Big surprise! I just goofed around and found a shortcut which was very lucky because it doesn't open always. If I understood it correctly an enemy must throw grenade at you at the time the bombs exlode. This shortcut saved a whopping 17:22 seconds!
I have to credit Dromiceius for criticism that made me try harder. And Aqfaq too, for support and use of avatar which always makes me smile.

Awesome improvement in the crate level. It's hard to say at a glance if it's readily improvable, so I'm satisfied. Yes vote.

That was interesting. Is it just me, or are the graphics in this game really disappointing for a Genesis game? My first thought was that it looked like a DOS VGA game. The textures are boring and repetitive, and the people don't look as real as I was expecting. For that matter, the whole game is repetitive. Every level looks basically the same, and ends with the same boss fight with slightly different vehicles. Anyway, it did look pretty optimized. There was pretty big lag in Mission 3 when all of the bombs were going off. Was there no way to kill any more guys to deal with that? Come on, Rambo! I paid to see a bloodbath! I enjoy seeing a game get optimally TASed, even if it's not a terribly exciting game, and this game was pretty close to my boring threshold. Assuming that it's optimal, I'll probably vote Yes to this.
TASing or playing back a DOS game? Make sure your files match the archive at RGB Classic Games.

Yeah, the only interesting and creative design is the interactive shadow of the doors, but even that looks bad, because it is the only thing that looks well made and does not fit there.

Indeed, a disappointment, although in the final battle the helicopter can be shot down and it falls on the tank, which is a nice surprise. I haven't watched the movie yet, but since I liked the previous one, I'll probably like this one too.

Well, this was one of the first Genesis games... There was pretty big lag in Mission 3 when all of the bombs were going off. Was there no way to kill any more guys to deal with that? Of course I tried it and it was slower. Logically thinking killing bomb deployers would cause less lag. Every level looks basically the same, and ends with the same boss fight with slightly different vehicles. I can continue with disappointing boss fights. The tank can't even hit you! You bet I cracked after I found that out :D

@hopper This is a first generation Genesis game....the graphics are gorgeous! I remember the first time I played it I was like "damn, these graphics rock!". @ maTO uh oh, close but not quite, you might wanna redo this run and optimize it. On the second and last levels, my none-TAS run of this is faster than yours :O

hazeus: Nice! I just didn't know that secret passage in 2nd mission. You have clearly played more this game than me. However, I don't intend to do this game anymore.

Awww... Too bad... It is not a really hard or long game to record, so I hope someone tries to optimize it a bit more. I also hope that maTO continues recording movies, since they are always interesting to watch and they are useful for future tasers.

I've just had it with Rambo for a while if not forever :) I'll continue doing Beyond Oasis if I could find correct mood for it. I left the game with low spirit power and it depresses me :/
