when i try to TAS this game, the graphics around yoshi become all messed up. is this because of a bad ROM, or something else?

Plugin problem. Try using Glide64 Wonder ++.

If I remember correctly, nitsuja's solution was to change the emulated width to 320 and the emulated height to 240. Under the options of whatever plugin you're using, there should be a couple of boxes somewhere within the plugin that are empty (that'll let you type things in) and that's where you'd enter those numbers. Hope this helps.
