I'm sure a lot of you are more knowledgable than me with choosing a screen recorder. Now my question to you all is which one is the best for screen recording? I'm not entirely sure how snes games, gba, etc games are being recorded to avi format but i would like to know what program can record really good, can compress(or tell me what program to use to compress it), and is also free. Right now i'm using hypercam and it isn't really that good because some of the hotkeys interfere with other keyboard functions and that could really mess things up. I might also load some (regular) speed runs into speeddemosarchive for your enjoyment but right now finding a really good recording program is really hard for me.

I've had absolutly no problems with Camtasia. And with snes9x and VBA etc. they have their own AVI dumpers programmed in

You should re-install Famtasia or get another version. Must be a bug in the exe. Camstudio is freeware. It's not great but still OK.
Contra Force deserves a TAS. D':

Camstudio. Looks and feels like Camtasia, but it's totally free. http://camstudio.org/

Aren't most (if not all) AVIs published here created by the emulator itself, not by a screen capture software?

Yes, they are, and they should be

For 3D games, FRAPS is the de facto tool (correct me if I'm wrong). I haven't tried Camstudio, but Camtasia is good for anything windowed and 2D. This includes most emulators, but anything that has direct AVI capture builtin kicks external recording out the window.

Warp: No, they aren't. In 2004, before P.JBoy had joined, there weren't AVI recording in Famtasia. So, uses of screen capture was needed. Then later, blip added it but it wasn't used so much as he addded rerecording in FCEU not so much time after.

"Aren't published" means currently, nowadays. Not some 5 years ago.

Thanks. Camtasia Studio 5 works wonders. Camtasia Studio is great when i'm not recording a TAS and when i just like to upload videos for pleasure on youtube. It also auto compresses for me so it does half the job for me. Now i'm having a problem with recording on any emulator that was edited for tas-ing purposes. Like for instance Vba re-recording & fceu re-recording emulators. I'm recording and a freaken 20 second video takes up about 200 mb on my computer. It's outrageous and now i want to ask you guys which compressor will be the best to use. Also, currently because of the imense amount of space the recording features in the emulators take up, i am instead using the camtasia program instead to record. Now i have a slight problem. I'm having trouble recording sound. I'm using a laptop btw. I am able to record sound (it's a bit of a hassle: the voice recognition is on top of my screen but not on the screen, it's where the locks are when the laptop is closing) but only if i pump the volume very high. I don't have a microphone and i'm not sure if it really works. Is there any other way for recording programs to capture sound? I've made some videos and uploaded them on youtube using these programs but the sound can only be heard if the watcher turns up the volume to a higher level than normal.

Well, you can read this for a full answer, but if you download x264 then that's your main tool
