In depth about the run

This is my improvement over JXQ's 100% Super Metroid run, it is 2 minutes and 34 seconds faster than his version in realtime, or 9249 frames, and ~1 minute and 51 seconds faster ingame, or 6636 frames. Ingame clock stands at 00:36:03:43, yes I know, ouch :(
The 3 main improvements here are the torizo skip (21+ seconds) the mother brain stand up glitch (~15 seconds) and the routechange. Don't really know how much it saved though, due to trouble with comparing the routes completely, but it has 6 less doors and less backtracking, so maybe 10-15 seconds in realitime. The rest of the time is largely due to a lot of new room strategies, general optimization, and for realtime, minimizing door scrolling (without this I would actually have reached 00:35 quite easily...).
I have also made a alternative ending to this run, that removes the only pause screen, kills motherbrain without glitching, and saves the animals.
There is a excel spreadsheet formatted by hero of the day, in it are details on almost every room, some are left out due to the routechanges, and for the same reason it is not 100% accurate, but works good for room comparison and getting explanations for some of the things I do which might look a little (and in some cases maybe a lot) weird.

Information about authorship

As many probably know this started out as a team project between me and hero of the day. However, as he gained less and less time to work on the run I gained more, and in the end I did virtually all the work on the actual run, though hero still suggested ideas of improvements and new tricks, and the finial time would have been seconds higher without him. Thus he thought it would have been unfair to include him as an author of the run when submitting.

My two cents about what I presume will be the discussion about this run not having any input animation

Yes that is right, this run does not have any input animations, which I guess will gain me some no votes, but I had my reasons for not using them. I think the main reason they where so awesome in JXQ's run (besides him being an extraordinary comedian) was that the whole concept was new, it was the first run to use anything like that, naturally this run could not top that no matter what I would have animated. And since JXQ is a very funny guy I would have had little chance doing so anyway, and I think anything not as good as his work would simply be seen as redundant to the movie, and perhaps even as a bad attempt to copy his idea. Naturally I was not very eager to spend hours upon hours doing something that I predicted would be seen as mediocre, but I did actually start to add some input a bit into the run (some of which you can still see the bottom line of), and had a few thousand frames covered. It ended up in the trash bin though as I never really got very satisfied with them.
Also I hope that the main interest for most here is the run itself anyway... Oh well enough nonsensical rambling and bad arguments already.

Thanks to

Most of all hero of the day obviously, for figuring out a lot of improvements and new strategies, and it was more or less solely his work on improvements between the release of the last 100% run and the start of this one that made me do it at all.
JXQ, for making excellent runs. This would obviously not have been nearly as fast without his other runs to improve upon.
And pretty much everyone active in the Super Metroid thread during the brief times of peace (almost everyone has done something), you know who you are.

mmbossman: Impressive work. Accepting as an improvement to the published 100% movie.

Chaosv1: Encoding... Saturn's already encoded this one, checking and publishing

Well it is a lot better than putting up two full lenght avi files that are identical up to the last 5-10 minutes anyway. If no one encodes the alternate ending just putting a link to the smv would work as well though. EDIT: Oh and nice work Saturn, excellent video quality :p

Another idea would be to append the alternate ending to the end of the official avi, with an introductory text screen (and of course a note in the movie's page so that people will know it's there).

After watching this run twice through, I am absolutely astounded not just by the execution of this run, but also its creativity and entertainment value. Whether it was using Grappling Hook to open doors, that glitch on Mother Brain, the painstaking damage and route planning or just the sheer SPEED of it all, this run knocked my socks off and could easily get my vote for run of the year (that's saying a lot). Instant yes vote.

or if the run is an mkv, it can have two "edition"s. one that is normal and one that plays the alternate ending. Not difficult to set up.

I refuse to watch this until I get the lua script to work that removes all door transitions and item collection pauses, when I get that to work it'll make me cream myself. No yes vote until that. I can just imagine the speed..

Well it was explained, but simply make a blank txt file, copy the script into it, save. change the file extension to .lua, and in snes9x, after you start the rom and movie, and then go to File>"Run lua script", and... run your lua script. :)

D'awww Was disappointed at the lack of input, but I'll keep old JXQ's hilarious run just cause of it. Downloading this one now. EDIT: I know why it isn't there, and I understand it, but it's still a letdown.

If anyone could encode a version with no cutscenes (the "you got x item" message) and as a .mkv file, I would be very delighted. I think someone did this for JXQ's run if I'm not mistaken.

AngerFist: I will try to look into it (still need to figure some stuff out). In case somebody's already at it, don't stop because of me; I will most likely fail anyway. /edit: didn't work out as expected. It seems mplayer ignores ChapterFlagEnabled in an mkv file...

By ChapterFlagEnabled, I assume you intend to insert chapters in the .mkv file? If you want my opinion, I really don't care about chapters (I don't mean to sound rude).

I wanted to use chapters because with ChapterFlagEnabled 0 I planned on skipping the fast-forward parts without having to actually re-encode everything. But since neither VLC nor mplayer nor xine seem to support it (VLC freezes and mplayer and xine just ignore), I figured that other players weren't supporting it either. I guess I'd have to cut everything in pieces to get it working. Unfortunately, making a whole new encode is pointless as well because only the video parts are fast-forwarded when encoding, but the audio is not. If any coder wants to fix this bug, feel free to drop me a patched win32 build (haven't found a avi-creating lua-version of snes9x yet). /edit: Screw it, I'll re-encode everything and see if it helps. //DeHackEd beat me to it...

I thought this run was incredibly entertaining. Probably the best TAS I've seen in a while. It's really great to see how the Super Metroid Runs have progressed over the years ... as a big fan of the collective work of the TAS community, I'd say the series of Super Metroid games has been some of the best of the best. The attention to detail and the successful effort to entertain definitely make this a work of art. Keep up the good work!

I've never played this game but I definitely give thumbs up for this run. Very clever usage of spikes to move faster and also the usage of some kind of charge attack to go trough almost whole screen at once. Using super bombs was pretty nice too. This game really has alot of secret places. Reminds me of James Pond 2... Good work! I can't point any places for improvement. Well I shouln't too, because I have no experience of this game. ;)

Actually, it would be really hard to point improvement since the game has been TAS and reTAS and people are now looking for frame improvement. There is nothing that look sloppy in this run.

I'm a lover of Super Metroid, is the best game I ever played and I admire the programmers behind this master piece because they did it with assembler language (!!!). I reached this site through Super Metroid Redesign hack after watching a TAS from SaturnTAS (youtub...) and learned what TAS is. I LMAO watching it is awesome! Congratulations. waburto.
