A yet another quest to save a pixel princess! This time the princess looks like a blob, though.
The game in question is A Boy and His Blob - The Rescue of Princess Blobette. If you enjoy the NES prequel, you will probably enjoy this one too. There is only one level, the castle, which consists of 104 (8x13) screens filled with hazardous puzzles. The gameplay is very non-linear and there are many ways to save the trapped princess. This is the fastest route I was able to find.
This movie has been available at my userpage for some time. I submitted it now, because I have no intention to improve it and it is a funny movie anyway. Thanks to LSK for feedback.

Game Objectives

  • Recorded with vba-rerecording-19.3 (desynchs with v20)
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Abuses a programming error in the game
  • Uses death as a shortcut
  • Genre: Puzzle?
  • Extends the input to enhance the strangeness of the movie
Alternatively, a movie that aims for fastest input is here: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/539649368/BlobFastestInput.vbm
I'll leave it for the judge to decide, which one of the movies to use, if this gets accepted for publication.

Comments

Floor Glitch

There is a glitch that allows going through a floor at a certain unintended spot (at screen {x7, y6} in the map linked above). The floor at that spot is special, because it is supposed to open after the princess is saved. However, the blob reacts to the floor already as if there was a gap. I feed the blob a jelly bean to form a bridge over the "pre-supposed gap" and then I cancel the bridge immediately. The game now thinks momentarily that there is no solid ground, because the blob bridge was canceled. This results the player falling through the floor. The glitch does not require that the blob makes the bridge over the exact spot where the imaginary gap is. It works even when the blob is off-screen, eats the bridge-forming jelly bean and cancels the bridge.

Death

After the princess is saved, the male blob still needs help to get to the throne room, so I suicide to get there faster.

Possible Improvements

  • Lag reduction?
  • With the non-linear level design and wide variety of jelly beans, anything can happen! I was even able to get outside the castle boundaries, but it had no desirable results...

Jelly Bean Walkthrough

Due to the positive initial feedback, here is a more detailed explanation of the jelly beans used in the run. If somebody has clear understanding of the possible puns in the names and functions of the jelly beans, please share the joy.
In the beginning of the run I use...

Tangerine = Trampoline

To get the bag of jelly beans including lime.

Lime = Key

This opens the door. Then I run right to get another bag of jelly beans. Then I use punch.

Punch = Hole

To get down fast. Here we have some very heavy lag for an unknown reason.

Ketchup = Teleports the blob to the spot where the bean lands

I use this to position the blob, so that he catches up and is not left too much behind.

Strawberry = Bridge

I throw the strawberry bean off-screen straight to the blob's mouth, so that he starts forming a bridge. Then I whistle to cancel the bridge at the correct location to make the boy fall through the ground. Too bad there's leathal falling damage, which causes some clumsiness throughout the run.

Ketchup again

To put the blob in a good trampoline position.

Tangerine again

To go up the tower. The large boiling pot is lethal and it could be frozen with mint jelly bean, but it is not necessary, because the blob can be positioned on the edge of the pot, which is just enough to not hit the ceiling when bouncing upwards the tower.

Ketchup again

To summon the blob here.

Honey = Hummingbird

By transforming into a bird, the blob can open Blobette's prison cage. The princess would then fall down and land on the frozen pot and walk to safety. It is a shame that the speed-oriented movie can't show how the princess Blobette now falls into the boiling pot, because the water was not frozen.
The rest of the movie consists of using ketchup and punch to travel fast to the throne room for some blob romance.

mmbossman: Accepting, in all its jelly-bean goodness.
ShinyDoofy: Processing...

Amusing. Good marks from me, a lot of weirdness from a rather weird game.

Wow, have not know, that you can play this game so fast like the NES game. Nice glitches and death trick.

Very nice! It's nice to see that the GB version is as weird as the NES game. That was some excellent game screwage.

Heh, very cool movie Aqfaq! I personally like the extended input ending, since it gives the feeling of "Aw shit, my blob is getting lucky, and I'm not getting any... where's the nearest cliff?" Anyway, excellent job.
