Post subject: Does Vista affect emulators?

I used Windows XP up till now. As my PC gets older, I was planning on buying a new one but there's almost only Windows Vista out there these days. Now I'd like to know if you can TAS with Vista, or if there are known problems. Thanks in advance!

Afaik all emulators used here seem to run fine (check out Dega 1.15 in case you've still got 1.14a and want to use it).

I would wait until Windows 7 comes out later this year.

I just recently got a new laptop with Vista. -Snes9x works -VBA works -Mupen works -Haven't tried FCEU -Desmume 0.9 doesn't work AFAIK, Vista creates some problems with AVI recording on some emulators (like mupen); besides that, I don't think TASing is affected at all. 3D emulation is only doable depending on what your video card's capabilities are. I made my choice based on that, so that's something to think about. Besides that, I haven't noticed any differences.

You don't need to hold out until then; but I was informed that it wasn't going to be ready until next year, not this one. I'm fine/happy with things now, and when windows 7 is available, I'll switch to that. But I don't regret replacing my 3 year old computer with my current one, even though it does have vista.

To avi capture with mupen (and possibly others) in vista, you just have to disable aero. You can even set it do do this just when you open the mupen.exe, by right clicking, properties, compatability tab > disable desktop composition. I have tried windows 7 twice now, and it has been on average the same as vista, so I see no need to upgrade...

What Vista hate? People are discussing quite frankly and without prejudice. Besides, 'disabling Aero' is not the most obvious way I can think of to resolve a problem with AVI output. :)

My first draft of NES Willow was done on Windows 7. Not all older versions ran with this OS. Maybe they can behave on Vista, but I don't have that on me right now.

same here, but that reminds me of one of the few things I will miss when I upgrade to Windows 7: I can't use the Windows Classic theme anymore, even though that was an option in Vista.

Err, I saw an option for it. It's a classic theme. Also, you don't have to disable Aero if you use an OpenGL plug-in. Having used Vista for 2 and a half years, I can safely say you will get little in the way of problems with emulators. The compatibility problems were blown out of proportions by the media, and were mostly to do with the problematic takeoff of mainstream 64-bit architecture.

And I wanted to TAS Kirby SqSq one day :( Mupen doesn't matter. VBA, snes9x and fceu should work.

Will Windows 7 continue this silly 64bit/32bit version? Or will they finally move to 64bits, with 32 bit compatibility mode?

^Yes, but the associated Windows Server version (2008R2) will be 64-bit only.

Apparently if you disable Aero, some emulators will show this problem.

Okay, setup was as fast and easy as I have heard about on the Internets, but sadly my video card is not supported beyond XP, so I had to use a generic driver that doesn't support DX9, so I can't use anything above Vista Basic; also, I noticed that Classic is indeed still available, but several UI elements look like crap in that theme so I'm sticking with Basic.

I fixed the problem, all I needed to do was re-download the emulator, ergo replacing the config files and such. You should be able to use desmume just fine. My bad.
