Submission Text Full Submission Page
This is a sidestroller, speedwalk, or whatever you want to call it. This is also an improvement to the Submission #2330 of adelikat.
It's 75 frames faster measuring the length of the input file. Here is the improvement list:
I got the mushroom in 8-2 (adelikat did it in 8-3) I saved 42 frames in 8-3 I got hurt in 8-4, the flying fish segment, got in the pipe earlier
I stoped the input file when I entered my last input, too.
I have also tried to get the mushroom in 4-1, but it was not as fast as this one.
There is no improvement before 8-2 in this movie. You have to kill few enemies to get the bullet earlier. I think the bullet in 8-3 is the closest situation.
Hope you like this movie, and thanks to adelikat and andrew_g.

In fact, I can end up the input on frame 24480, when we replay the movie, it plays the last input when the movie is over.

Dude, there's a button called "edit" on all of your posts. I'd be thankful if you also used it for adding content instead of almost triple posting.

I could use that encode already. Nah, kidding, don't wanna rush yall. Anyway, the frame wars continue.

I vote for a dual encode, including adelikats version.

Eh, whatever. I'll see what I can do some time until tomorrow. /edit: They really do differ a lot. Not that much in speed for most of the time, but for how the game is played (walking backwards, hitting coin blocks and the like). I'll have the dual encode ready soon-ish.

Something seems wrong. I'll abstain this time.
<klmz> it reminds me of that people used to keep quoting adelikat's IRC statements in the old good days <adelikat> no doubt <adelikat> klmz, they still do

Wow, very clever! :) I still think it can be improved. EDIT: so my idea failed. i'lln try again later... Heh, this should work... I'll try later tomorrow. This is pretty close to working, but it's not so I'm really annoyed.

I tested the 8-2 mushroom nand didn't think it was faster. Oh well, I guess I was wrong! Taking damage in 8-4 was very clever, I wouldn't have ever thought of that. Nice improvements, yes vote.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

Something that would be neat is an overlapping encode. Record Happy Lee's with a hacked up version of the rom where everything but mario is pink, then encode adelikat's as normal, then layer them ontop of each other with some type of re-coloring on happy lees Actually, that sounds super easy to do, I might install FCEU and do this my self :P edit: Didn't come out as good as I was hoping for. This is "adding" the difference between the two videos in: walkathon2335_and_2330.avi You get a green mario when ever happylee does not line up. It's a decent effect. And this is the two runs them side-by-side, walkathon2335_and_2330sidebyside.avi (happylee is on the left) I made the hacked rom, but was having trouble getting the random solid colors to be blacked out in AviSynth. I'll give it a second go later for the first file:
lee = AviSource("happylee unhacked.avi").Trim(64,0)
kat = AviSource("adelikat-smb-sidestroller.avi").Trim(458,0)
viddif = Overlay(kat, lee, mode="Subtract")
return Overlay(kat, viddif, mode="Add")

Thanks for the side by side encode, Hoe. Both runs were well done, and HappyLee's is clearly faster. HappyLee: You jump too much. The sound gets annoying. Jumping on enemies, jumping to grab coins, and jumping to take a fun route are all good. Jumping to pass time gets annoying. Please consider this on your next submission. I did like adelikat's goal of most coins then highest score, but I don't think too much is lost without it. It is a good idea in the future. I'll give this a Yes vote if HappyLee will stop making me listen to so much jumping on his next run. I think we should give andrewg some time to try to beat this before it gets accepted though.

Why did happy enter the third pipe (and lost the powerup) but adelikat the fourth?. I can see they are a warp puzzle but I haven't played SMB :D, does the frame matter or something like that?

Yes, and don't forget: The fewer sounds you make, the more of the music we get to hear.

Thanks Hoe for posting that dual encode. Thank you for ignoring my post and thus having me waste time and resources pointlessly. Also, thank you for the half-assed sound line. I really appreciate it.

ShinyDoofy, your efforts would not go unappreciated... EDIT: Hoe, I DO like the echo Mario vid. Nice idea, visually.

Thank you. I tried to eat the mushroom in 4-1, it's as fast as yours.

8-4 might be very improvable. EDIT: Yeah, it is.

You mean, you have found a way to improve 8-4?

That bastard! How dare he take time and effort to do something helpful that you're already doing? That's something Hitler would do! Let's find out where this guy lives and give him the beating he deserves.

klmz...care to share what your improvement is to 8-4? I've never TAS'd this game, but I wondered if a few frames could be sacrificed to maipulate the pirahna out of the way instead of barging through it. I enjoyed both adelikat & HappyLee's submissions. Maybe HappyLee overdid his jumping a touch, but hey, all Mario can do is walk and jump, so what do you expect?
