This game sucks. Therefore I present to you a movie that punishes the audience 50 less seconds than the published movie.
This movie was made using FCEUX2.1.1 and I highly recommend watching it with the emulator, as we have included some nice subtitle entertainment.
In addition, you should download the submission release package from my adelikat-TAS project downloads page.
It includes many accessories for your viewing pleasure.
  • A lua script for viewing various game data
  • Savestates for each level. FCEUX2.1.1 supports drag & drop for savestates, so it is easy to watch any level you wish by simply dragging the provided savestates onto the emulator.
  • A memory watch file we used in the making of this TAS

The journey

This run was inspired by my famtasia challenge. This is one of the few remaining survivors from the dark ages of famtasia. This isn't from a lack of trying though. Many a great TASer has attempted to optimize only to be slain by this evil creature.
And why did they fail? The nasty RNG for the mini-game map screens at the end of each level. But one lone TASer prevailed where many great TASer before him failed: Using the mystical powers of Lua, he managed to conquer this evil beast once and for all. Ok, why am I talking this way?
DarkKobold was able to disect the RNG (well, as it turns out there are 2 RNG's which was the source of all the pain) and find the optimal solution for each map. With this hurdle conquered our team quickly ravaged through this game.

Tricks/Glitches

There is a big glitch shortcut taken in level 8. Using the bat + taking damage it is possible to get inside the wall thus passing a good portion of the level. Thanks to yunshui for this discovery!
There is a weapon glitch too. You can fire rapidly by pressing the opposite direction you are facing the frame after firing.
The auto-scrollers are done from inside walls due to a glitch with the bat
Lag is a real pain in this game. Did anyone even test this game before they released it? A lot of TAS strategy in levels was built around finding a way to reduce lag. In particular, Level 8 where you could easily rack up thousands of lag frames with a bad strategy.

Summary

  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Manipulates Luck
  • Abuses programming errors in the game

adelikat: Replacing submission file with one that has fixed subtitles. The movie content was not changed.

Truncated: Accepting submission! Nice to see another Famtasia run bite the dust.

Very interesting run, I enjoy your conversation more than the run. How to make subtitle in a movie file? Well, why didn't you guys explain who the guy on the coin is? -o-

.fm2 is a text based movie format. Open it up in a text editor and you will see how to make subtitles in movies. It only works for .fm2 and FCEUX. I have no idea who that dude on the coin is!

It was alright. Nothing to watch twice, but still good enough for my yes vote.

A slightly faster walking speed would have benefited this game, but as far as the actual action in the movie, I'd say there's no need for any entertainment/speed tradeoffs, as the speed it was completed is about the only entertaining action-related part of this game. I can quite agree with the idea of doing away with an obsolete emulator's movie in the process though. Yes vote for making the game entertaining, and list completion.

Good stuff! Very obvious improvements on some of the bosses, and the overall antics were good. I don't see why you consider this such a bad game: it doesn't make a lot of sense, but it's a basic platformer with a bunch of different weapons available, which gives it a lot of variety when playing normally. I played a fair bit of the Game Boy game (which Sir VG did a run of), and that was fun. Out of curiosity, though, why all the missed shots? Some were to get your weapon charging, but there were also times when you'd miss a shot and then follow up with another uncharged shot to kill an enemy. Also, it's a shame that you couldn't kill more enemies in the train area or in Stage 7 without lagging up the game. I've got just a couple comments on the subtitles, which were overall excellent and funny. First, "bordem" should be "boredom" if you're going for correct spelling (this happens twice). Also, you guys didn't point out that the mini-game announcer changes after stages 7 and 8: he loses his sunglasses and then goes bald! That was always one of the funnier moments in the game for me. Thanks, though, for explaining the questions in the statue of liberty's game, though it felt like my subtitles were sync'ed too early for that section.

I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! I'm pretty sure there is no "missed shots" other than those needed to charge a weapon. The "blast weapon" (that is the name I call it, I have no idea what anything is called i this game) looks like a normal shot but explodes when it hits something. Perhaps it seemed like another normal shot?

Hmm, this movie is good enough. I'll abstain again, though.

I could swear I saw a few missed shots in the ice level, for instance where you fire a shot before firing a small shot to take out the skater on the top part of the stage. If it were the charged Bomb weapon (that's what that weapon is translated to in the GB version), the explosion would have been bigger. Still, good run! I guess I'm just being picky.

You need to fire your weapon in order to transform into a bat (you need to charge up, just like with the Bomb weapon), that's why there's a missed shot there.

At first, the commentary was funny but in the end, it got annoying and distracted too much the actual play. The size of the subtitles is huge.. It sometimes covers more than half the screen. Wish we could get an .mkv without subtitles.

You are aware that those subtitles are not hardcoded but optional, right? Click through your VLC settings or press V when using mplayer.

If you are using mplayer, you can get nicer-looking subtitles (when viewing soft-subbed videos, naturally) by using the command-line option -ass (no, I'm not making that one up). This is so with most if not all soft-subbed videos. (I don't know why it isn't the default in mplayer.)

I found the subtitles to be an excellent edition. And they look great in Media Player Classic.

I'm not a huge fan of the game, but the subtitles definitely made it much more entertaining. The back-and-forth banter and jokes about DK's Shining predilections were amusing, and explanations for why certain choices were made (e.g. hiding on the ceiling during the falling-platforms stage) were a big help.

Link to video 11 years later, I made a encode in higher quality around 11 days ago.
I like to comment on submissions and look around the site. You have probably seen me before (if you have been around for a while) either on the site, Discord, or any other social media. I recently took up making temporary encodes for new submissions. Also, I never forget to greet Tompa wherever I find him!
