I'd like to start a new project that would require a large amount of encoding help. I want all obsolete movies to have at least 1 streaming link. For most of these movies either the old AVI is unavailable or substandard anyway so re-encoding them would required or preferred. Also, I would like to have an encode provided for all unpublished (but serious) submissions. The priority would be on submissions rejected due to goals or game choice. In addition, we have a HD project in which we are trying to have a high quality streaming link for all publication (ideally including the obsolete ones). The point of the HD is specifically for nicer looking streaming not for the "official" encode. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xcp0e2 Needless to say this is all a tall order and can't be realistically done with our current active encoders so I'm hoping to inspire new encoders (and old encoders). We have resources for encoding: http://tasvideos.org/EncoderGuidelines.html http://tasvideos.org/EmulatorResources/MakingAVI.html In addition I and other publishers would be willing to work with people in helping them learn the ropes. Also, I will have intend to have an encoder forum rank added and I was considering adopting some kind of "encoder points" type system (opinions on this idea are welcome).
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

I like the idea of a forum rank.

How much interaction does encoding require? That is, how much time would one need to spend in front of the computer to get the various programs running when they're needed?

In. Is there a list of games without encodes, at the moment?

To start with, I have created a list of movies which aren't mirrored anywhere at the moment; for older movies this suggests there is no current encode either. It is at http://tasvideos.org/UnmirroredMovies.html

I keep trying to download the files on various games in that list, but the links appear to be broken. Example

That is one of the movies which doesn't have a (current?) encode at the moment; it has been disabled in the tracker. In other words, it's one of the movies we would want encoded.

Yeah, I'm saying I can't get the necessary file for it >_> I'm supposed to get the .fcm, right? I get this when I try that:

Try getting it from here instead. Turns out the site doesn't like having "www" in the URL when trying to download movies (my fault for putting it in the above unmirrored movies link).

So movies like number 2 that say the AVI is currently unavailable need to be re-encoded?

http://tasvideos.org/Sgrunt/DIVXMovies.html This is another list that needs improved movies, apparently. I've already started on Flashback, gonna work my way through the Genesis games on this list and the Unmirrored Movie list.

There are youtube links in some of the discussion threads for these movies (ironically, the same one I linked earlier). Admittedly, not the best quality, but they exist.

That presently only shows currently published movies. Perhaps I will go and add obsolete movies to the list.

Are there any movies that should have encoding priority on those lists? EDIT: How should the old Famtasia movies be handled? I downloaded the emulator using Bisqwit's patch generation page and found the old encoding instructions for it via archive.org, but it doesn't seem like you can specify any AVI capture options. It just starts recording from the moment you load a ROM. Whatever codec it uses causes VLC to display nothing and MPC-HC (with the lastest ffdshow tryouts) to display incorrect colors. It plays back without any problems in WMP, though.

Alright, I made a decent amount of headway, but I'm having difficulty getting the subtitles and the logo in. This is as far as I got without any problems. I was wondering if someone could look at what I did here to tell me what I did wrong. EDIT: encode itself, figured I'd upload it just because http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_Ep8WPLgAM

I can help, if you'd be willing to teach. I have a pretty decent comp too (my internet is my limiting factor), and I'm a fact learner too.

I had a look, and it looks like the cause of your problems is that the sound in your logo file isn't of the same format as that in the encode. You can get around this by changing -oac copy to -oac pcm, though your logo really should have the same sound format as the rest of your encode (48000Hz mono for NES) as using -oac pcm will end up changing the sound format to what's in the logo. Also, your recorded.avi is in H.263 format; you really should be getting output in a lossless format!

OH, huh. I'll mess around with both of those things and get back to you, then. Coulda sworn I followed directions exactly.

That's raw RGB16. You would need to convert it to RGB32 to fix your problems.

Well, you can start by perusing the Encoder Guidelines and our Making AVI pages (in particular the common steps page). If you get stuck, you can ask here (or pop in on IRC where the publishers and encoders usually hang out).
