After successfully rescuing all of the elder Dragons, Spyro is taking a vacation to Dragon Shores--at least that's where thinks he's going. A dinosaur-riding sorcerer, known as Ripto, has invaded the world of Avalar, and is wreaking havoc on its citizens with his magic. Spyro must travel through the world of Avalar and undo the damage done by Ripto... but vacation are more important for him, so he just want to beat Ripto to reach the Dragon Shores, Avalar problems are not his problems.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: PCSX-RR v0.1.2
  • CD ID: SCUS-94425
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Heavy glitch abuse
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Genre: Platform

About the sound plugin

MIDAS PSX SPU is better than the TAS Sound Plugin and does not desync. But like the TAS Sound Plugin, it will not play sound during cutscenes and credits.
NOTE : Sometimes the movie desync at the start of Glimmer. Close and reopen PCSX if this happen, it works fine for me.

Movements

Here is the Velocity of some movements of Spyro :
Supercharge : 55
Charge on ground : 30
Charge into water : 28
Glide : 25
Charge in air : 24
As you can see, charge in air is a move to avoid as many as possible.

Glitchs

Dash Jump

  • What : Make a high jump to reach some inaccessible height.
  • How : Press X some frames then press X and square at the same time. Best result are get by only pressing X between 5 and 7 frames.
  • Where : Everywhere.

Dash Jump Boost

  • What : Boost a little bit the height of the Dash Jump.
  • How : Stop pressing X and square, and only press triangle.
  • Where : Autumn Plains (skip Climbing) and Winter Tundra.

Swim in the air

  • What : Read tittle.
  • How : After having learnt to swim, dash or headbash in water when you are OOB. You will swim, but since you are OOB, the game will never stop your swim animation until you change level or reach a water surface.
  • Where : Winter Tundra

Camera glitch

  • What : Like in many 3D games, some events happen or not happen depending of the camera orientation.
  • How : L2 or R2 (don't work during a dash attack).
  • Where : Zephyr

Comments

To finish the game, you need to beat Ripto. Thanks to the swim in the air glitch, that means you need to go to Winter Tundra i.e. beat Gulp. No one have never find a way to fight Gulp without the 14 talismans, so you need them to finish the game.

Some stages comments

Aquaria Tower

As long as I don't activate the last button, I can speak to the leader but he will not give me his talisman. Also, I was only able to skip 75% of the sharks area without problem, but I could not skip the last part without being spotted (RAM adress : 197794)

Fracture Hills

The leader only appear the six musicians are free, so OOB is useless here.

Between Shady Oasis - Zephyr

Even if I had 401 gems when I paid Moneybasg, the 401th gem was get after start to talk with him, so it was like I had only 400 gems at this point.

Gulp

Heavy luck manipulation here, I tried my best to get the best combinations.

Ripto

All upgrades makes 10 damages at the first hit, then 4 for all others. Ripto have 60 hp and "Meca Gulp" have 80 hp. With some timing, you can kill Meca Gulp with only 3 upgrades (since green upgrade can make 30 damages to him).

Possible improvements

  • Skip the shark area at Aquaria Towers
  • Better gem route (especially the 500 first gems)
  • Better trajectories
  • Better luck manipulation
  • Skip the gulp door without any talisman
I hope you enjoy the run.

FractalFusion: Well done. Accepting for publication.
sgrunt: Encode is on the way (luckily).

Encode: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=CC87DD140F7FAC76 I never thought I would enjoy a TAS of this game, but I *really* enjoyed this one. It looks very well played and it's highly entertaining. I give it a strong Yes vote. (My encode has some graphical glitches because I used this plugin.)
You're just fucking stupid, everyone hates you, sorry to tell you the truth. no one likes you, you're someone pretentious and TASes only to be on speed game, but don't have any hope, you won't get there.

I watched all the WIPs that you posted and was very much looking forward to this. I didn't think that you'd be able to beat this game so quickly. My favorite parts were flying into the exploding building in Zephyr and the series of great jumps and glitches in Winter Tundra to get to Ripto. Yes vote, of course.

I completed this game a few times yet I had no idea what was going on about half the time. I was very entertained though. Good job! Yes vote.

Nice job, lapogne. It's nice to know you were able to complete this project after I lost motivation so quickly. I watched the run, and here's my feedback. The gem route is something we've discussed before and it can be improved I would imagine but your route is very good. Skipping the first speedway was definitely a good investment and it is nice to know you only had 1 or so gems left over at the end. Of course, any actual improvements would have to factor in which gems to not collect in your route to balance it out. Yeah, I hate gem routes, they're too complicated. I thought the lack of speed-increasing techniques that most TAS runs seem to come as standard would make the game boring, but cutting edges, timing jumps to the frame and quick camera work made it fun to watch. Fracture Hills was probably one of my favorite levels in the run. The bosses, as expected, provided the most entertainment, though. For Crush, I'm positive your tactic for killing him is optimal. Gulp is also quite impressive. I notice you said one of the possible improvements was luck manipulation. I'm not sure if you are talking about Gulp's battle, though. I would have to disagree with manipulating luck on Gulp to be that difficult, although I haven't tested it myself. As long as you don't get two rockets, you will kill him in the same amount of time since he has a brief "pause" after each attack is inflicted. I think you would lose a few frames if you have to use two rockets in one round of eggs, but again, I have never tested it. As for Ripto, I like how you were able to use the speed booster to harm him in phase 1. Doing that on a console is very tedious because of how small he is. I also like the strategic use of the green flame ability. Arcing it makes it so that two hits land at separate times so they both deal damage. Good job on the run. If you ever consider making a 100% run, I think I have a few tricks up my sleeve. Just post in the Spyro TAS topic.

As I said, I start to speak with Moneybags before getting the 401th gem. So if I had 1 less gem at this point, Moneybags would say "sorry but you are a poor dragon", even if I get the 400th gem into the discussion. About luck manipulation, it's about Gulp (since hunter can't really be manipulate in the Ripto battle). In the Gulp battle, you can manipulate separately two things : -Eggs position + Eggs hatching -Items Items are not "hard" to manipulate, but position + hatching of eggs are. For example, difference of time between the hatching of the same egg with two different luck manipulations can be more than 200 frames. Finally, don't forget that Gulp is not your friend, and he can destroy eggs/items which are in is way. About a 100% run, I don't ever consider making one alone, since it will be around a 2h run.

I'd prefer a 100% run, but it'll obviously be a while before that'll be done. As far as this run in particular, it's quite well done and entertaining, and the Winter Tundra skip to get straight to ripto definitely justifies an any% run of Spyro 2, so my verdict is Yes.

I really enjoyed this TAS. There was always something going on, whether it was gem collecting or flying rapidly from area to area. It was also really funny to see all the times you went out of bounds to skip entire sections of levels (and entire levels themselves, I suppose). This TAS seems to have a lot of "you shouldn't be able to do that" moments, which made it entertaining throughout. Yes vote from me. I have to add, some of the random cutscenes being quickly canceled were hilarious because they made no sense or just looked ridiculous without the proper context. Two that come to mind were 1) Moneybags raising his arms to the sky (in celebration?) and 2) some kind of pelican lighting a fire while staring at the camera. What a strange game :)

I can't describe how amazing this is... I tried TASing this game as some people know, but this is just overkill! Brilliant skips, gem routes, entertaining fights. Yes for sure :P

It used to drive me crazy the way the developers made the ledges just TOO high for me to jump to, eliminating many shortcuts. This TAS wipes the smug grins off the developers faces and makes them run to their mommies with their tails between their legs.
